Well, Abhijeet has released CDs & cassetes of old Kishoreda hits and i have always preferred the original over this copy version. Even the clones of Kishore da never came close in matching the maestro's voice, range, versatility and one special quality - naughtyness or the playfulness which was the unique factor in Kishoreda's voice.

The other day the rival show's singer sang mostly Rafi saab's songs and none of them could match even an ounce of the legend.

The Udit version of Khaike pan banaraswala is not at all a match for Kishoreda's immortal version in the original Don, this itself is a sufficient example of Kishore da's inimitable genius.

Isn't that we call it the golden era of Hindi film music? The benchmark set by Kishore, Rafi, Manna, Lata, Asha etc will be very very very difficult to reach.

Well, I would suppose that every new singer would know perfectly well that he or she is just a speck in comparison with Kishore, Rafi, Lata or Asha so they would probably not take it as an insult.

Even in the talent-hunt contests, when mentors or judges give their views, they often mention that it would be stupid to evaluate these new voices against those of Kishore, Lata et al, because it is impossible for these singers to sing anything close to those gold-standard singers.

Those yester-year singers were honed and moulded by scores of music-directors and lyricists who were so gifted that they could be called institutions in human form. Where can today's singers get that kind of training and experience?

What is wrong in trying to imagine how Kishore would sound when singing Kuch na Kaho or Jhoom barabar jhoom?

Isn't it possible that Kuch na kaho was a super hit because Sanu sang it (nasal king or no nasal king)?

There is also a possibility that if KK were to sing it, it may not have been as successful. (this is ignoring the composition aspect of the song)

I guess wishful thinking is one's prerogative. But, to me, its robbing the original singer credit. Even if a new singer is compared to an "institution", I think he/she would like being known for his/her own individuality and efforts in the interpretation.

Just because Arundhati Roy's style of phrasing some words is similar to Salman Rushdie, it does not mean The God of Small Things would have been more successful (or readable) if Rushdie had written it!
