It is a matter of taste. However, there are other more objective criteria like if somebody is singing in sur, taal. These are measurable criteria in my opinion and can be argued. To make a long story short, I will only provide rebuttals to what I think are measurable criteria.

In that vein, you said that my sur for 'Rim Jhim' was mostly right except for a couple of places, especially the second sulag sulag. I don't agree with that. I heard my rendition again to see if you were right about it. I also compared it to the original KK version. If you notice, the second sulag sulag is more drawn out for effect. Mine is even more pronounced than in the original. That is the only difference. I could not detect any hilna in the sur. Listen to the original and mine again and if you still feel the sur is amiss, we can PM each other about it so that we don't bore everybody else reading this thread 😆

You are right!!😛

Thanks Ashishji for your words 😳
Increasing traffic on this thread at the expense of songs I have sung 😛😆😆

Sahana, I actually took your comments as a compliment 😃 As even though you are not happy with my song selection you have still appreciated my voice😊 That says quite a lot 😳

Sahana, but Asha won a National award for this song. Surely, it could not have been on the merit of its lyrics and Asha's singing ability alone. I wonder if RD said 'It was a struggle to compose this song BUT the end result was immensely satisfying'. Personally, I too prefer 'Katra Katra' but I know several people whose favorite song from Ijaazat is 'Mera Kuch Saamaan'. Granted, some of them probably like it because of the lyrics but I think there must be more to it than that. The tune does have a haunting quality about it.

BTW, this discussion falls into the subjective realm that I was referring to a few posts back. It is probably something we will just have to agree to disagree on. And what better way to increase the traffic on this thread! 😉

Why couldn't it have won the award on the merit of its lyrics alone? The haunting quality is coming from the lyrics. Of course, this is my subjective opinion. This entire contest is producing winners on the basis of subjective opinions, isn't it? And it's the same in the bigger SRGMP on TV.

I can think of many songs, especially those written by Sahir Ludhianvi where the lyrics are so powerful that the tune is relegated to 2nd place. Take "main pal do pal ka shayar hoon" or "aurat ne janam diya mardon ko".

Some songs appeal more because of the tune and one pays attention to the lyrics only later. Many of SDB's and OPN's songs fall in the category (that's why OPN dared to work with an unknown lyricist. He knew the strength of his tunes).

And then there are those perfect songs, where the music and lyrics are equally brilliant!

I guess RD and Gulzar would have been satisfied with Ijaazat songs or they would not have okayed the final product. But I am sure, even they would know in their hearts that this was not their best collaboration, after having worked on "Aandhi", "Kinara", "Khushboo" and so on.

Aparna, I might soon be calling you THE VOICE which was the epithet given to Frank Sinatra. 😃 Your voice shines through any song!

👏

Very aptly put Sahana. Aparnaji the best part of your singing is the depth you bring into the songs.
