VJ - You said

The topic for this week is:

'SRGMP contests - should judges and viewers have an equal say on the results?' and I am only looking at the results of these reality shows

As far as I and some others see it - the results here is not just finding the deserving winner, but the bigger picture of finding one or many deserving singers (winner or no winner) with recognition and people connection to begin with... The whole purpose of a talent hunt show is defeated if we hunt out the best talent via the most learned judges, and they just cant break through after that and are lost anonymous somewhere! If that happens, well we have not achieved any results in that case!

So, I think we cannot debate just on choosing the winner in isolation - the purpose is effective talent hunt of singers that sustains... I am sorry if I was not able to make this point clear to you all this while.

And with the judges around, we are sure to find more deserving winners too... And I am not saying, judges will overturn the public decision.. Both will give their independent decisions, and the final outcome will be a weighted avg of their ranks.. So no question of one going against the other too...

I think music has a vast space to accomodate as much talent as it can.. So, I will definitely go for something that will give me say 3 very good singers who may or may not be winners, than getting 1 extremely brilliant singer who is just lost in the crowd!

is winning the show that important..i think only to the contestant in monetary terms..have any winners so far made it big...

the earliest example is sanjeevani..she didnt win but her voice was heard by vidhu vinod chopra..

shreya ghoshal too didnt win..she was spotted by sanjay leela bansali

kunal ganjawala didnt win either..

neither did karunya ..chopra(again) spotted him

the purpose of thisshow is to give singers a platform to be seen and heard...the longer they last in the show..better chance that he/she may get picked up....if a singer reaches top 2 or 3..he/she has done well

infact i feel sorry for the winner..he is put in a guilded cage with no fredom...the loser walks away free with all the sympathy too...

I think again we are talking 2 different things here 😕

I said that the end result of a talent show is to find talented singers (not necessarily winners) who have some recognition to begin with...

And of course, public voting helps in recognition.. By being a part of the decision making process, the public connect more to the show, discuss the singers more, try to keep up with any info on them and this in turn definitely makes them popular.. Not just to the people along, but they get noticed by the musical personalities too because now the whole nation and the media is talking about them...

So as I said - the talent show is about finding the most talented people (as many as them deserve) who get a platform to take it fwd with the advantage of starting off with a recognition! You need to read the whole statement that I wrote in my last post... Quoting a part of it does not help!

Again - India ki Voice or Indian Idol or MTV talent hunt - anything for that matter is not about one singer at the end!

So if we think different on this basic issue, I think we will keep repeating the same things again and again but never reach a point! And then the whole discussion becomes pointless!!!

Exactly my point Ankita - its not about winning, its about getting a few good talented singers out of the show who start with the advantage of being recognised by many (public as well as the music/movie industry biggies) and have better chances to make it big... If that is achieved, the purpose of the show is served 👍🏼

From what I read, I think Vijay bhai has been debating it very nicely...

just my $0.02...
Lets not forget that SRGM(P) had been around for 10+ years - long before these so called reality shows came up. So apparently, there was no dearth of sponsorship. The only thing different that happened here was that Gaj "ji" got a little greedy (it might not be fair to call him that since that might have been dictated by the owners of Zee TV, seeing the popular support of FG and II)). So, from a much respected talent show, SRGM overnight became a "one-of-those-ones" reality show.

Judges (no Daler paaji please 😆) decision for me any day. I might not agree (as I've in the past) with them all the time but I'll still go with them (and their experience) compared to some "abc" voting for "def" because he's so cute or else some "uvw" voting for "xyz" because he's from their region...

regds!

Rahul bhai,

Looks like both of us posted at the same time. As long as its not someone as ridiculous as our first "choice" - Daler paaji - I HAVE in the past and still will take any celebrity as a judge. The others that you've mentioned here did make ridiculous statements but let me assure you, almost all of these celebrities have appeared as a judge in the previous schedules and nowhere did they act like what we saw in C2005 (yep, even HR😆)...

JuggyE yaar, above is just a spoof. point though is that all are susceptible to bouts of very shoddy decision-making. they're all human after all. we did see how randomly they selected the initial 20 contestants out of 32 for their gharanas. at any time, i'd think percentage-wise they'd make as many wrong choices as the rest of the public. they might know technically how to make music, but they certainly dont have any innate copyright in terms of having a sense of music appreciation, or of knowing what is soulful/ appealing music. also, by and large, they're followers themselves, not leaders. barring a few exceptions, they're all trying to find what will sell to the same public that we seem to be dishing.

and incidentally, wasnt daler paaji the epitome of sur counting, a corner-store of judge-oriented "learned" music? we did find him ridiculous though, didnt we? come to think of it, does one really need a lot of training to be able to tell when someone is off-sur? does one need that PhD in music or to have spent countless hours practising music to know that someone doesnt have rhythm or good voice?

in any case, what was so wrong with the ultimate choices made by the public, either in emaet or c2005. all i've seen of the judges is bickering amongst themselves. massive egos getting in the way of making the kind of rational decisions we somehow magically think they can make.

juggyeji....idont think it is only about sponsers and greed on the part of the organisers....there was a major change in the audience too.

i will give you my example .taking 2 contestants from SRGMP..rahul saxena and arpita mukherjee..

when rahul won on srgmp,i just watched him sing with no particular passion....now on indian idol when he lost,i was shocked numb..i used to haunt all his fan sites and curse everybody...

take arpitha mukherjee,a winner again on srgmp...but on fg I rejoiced when she was voted out...i was waiting for the day😳

now why the different reactions..it is very simple,i participated in the whole show,by voting..i felt I made a difference..

till about 2 years back in my daughters school, the school captain was chosen by the principal and teachers..last year they decided that the students will elect the candidate...my daughter and her friends worked tirelessly to campaign..when her candidate lost..she was heart broken..before this i didnt even know who the captain was...but now i too wanted this girl to win...

now if you go to the turf club and dont bet on a horse..you most likely will not be interested..once you havepurchased a 10 buck ticket, watch your enthuisiasm grow..you are not sitting on the fence..you made a choice and you want to be proved right..

the way we watch srgmp is different today..because of the unpredictability of public voting..nahin tho by the judges expression we know the result any way..

now we fret over nihira's bad AV!

we worry why the hell hemus father has to attend the show!!

debus wife should have kept her cool!!

some of us even hoped everyone saw how nasty vinits parents were!!!

we dont miss anything..today we want debo to make it big first-before the others..we wait to hear the tiniest bit of news on nhira..after all she deserves maximimum success and fast!!!😆

who beat kunal ganjawala,or shreya what happened to them...we didnt care much...now as we are playing king makers and we have invested our time ,money emotions we want to know.......
