The major thing that comes out from this interview is that OP was immensly confident of his abilities and why not? He has given hits after hits after hits..
OP came into this industry when it was ruled by musically trained badshahs like Naushad Sahab, S D Burmanda etc. Would anybody have given him a chance to make it ? least of all become no.1 MD of his time with a fan following of his own. He, to this day has the greatest number of fan clubs to his name , and all of them are very active. He is simply adored by massess, who do not understand fine nuances of music but would want to listen to something that appeals to their ears. He is a MD who has cds selling on his name even to this day. "OP-collection". "OP hits"..etc. Those times were times of politics in the film music world. And to make the top film makers change their favourites and come to OP for music in itself was a big thing. There was so much competition and if OP could turn away some hot shot film-maker for whatever reasons, it again speaks for his confidence in himself. That he could dictate terms speaks volumes about his popularity with the masses.A person like Guru Dutt dropped SD and made OP compose for AAr Paar, C.I.D,and Mr. and Mrs.55. And GD was suposed to be one of the leading musically elite film-maker.Another musical star was Shammi Kapoor. Amongst all his hits, Kashmir Ki Kali stands out, needless to say, music by OP.It is a fact that films used to sell on his name.Otherwise what is known about Ek musafir, ek haseena and Phir wohi dil laya hoon, Mere sanam?..etc. Aren't the songs of Naya Daur as popular as the film itself?
Even to this day, his songs are played at concerts and are widely applauded.
He is simply evergreen.

For a long time I am not getting any time to get involved in any thought full posts. All due the conspiracy plotted of one Thakur Saab. 😡 😡

After going through all the posts I am little confused! Are we discussing moral character of a famous music composer or Mangeshker sisters were political or not. 😕

So let me bypass that (pardon my lack of comprehension) and focus on a related question. How important is the Moral character for Music or any performing art related person? Ok let me give you some examples – Oscar Wilde was severely condemned by the society and law for being ***. Da Vinci was member of secret societies (definition of moral character varies with time), Pablo Picasso was a big time womanizer. Van Gough's affinity towards shady lifestyle is well known. Pt. Ravishankar ji – well, *ahem* let me just say Nora Jones! In recent times Amir Khan is messed up in different controversies!

But should we peep at the lifestyle of the creator or just concentrate on the creation?
Do a Celebrity / Performing Artist need to have a great moral character?

What do you think?

CB, very well put again.

If we consider music to be divine, every person who is truly associated with it is a pujari indeed. OPN was one of them. In an industry where competition was tough, he managed to make a mark for himself, a niche for himself.

If we were to delve behind the mask on the artistes face, or the veil that surrounds them, we might be surprised to see many a skeletons. Some we know, some we dont. My belief is every fact can be read fully only if you take all interveneing facts into account, analyse them fully and then arrive at a conclusion whether the person did the right thing or not under the given set of circumstances.

We do not have all the material for us to analyse the whole situation then, so why pick one or two stray incidents and pass moral judgements. In any case, moral judgements are alway so subjective that there is never a 100% right or wrong to it.

The world praises the Mangeshkar sisters. But so much and more is also spoken under the breath. We cannot hear the glory, ignoring the mutterings, for there is equal truth in both. 😊

Specially if we are talking about an interview then who knows what wounds were open and he reacted. I still believe in him that he could have mouled any singer in a gem. 👏

and from the lil that i know of that era, my impression is that Asha's best music was from her era with OPN. also, whatever someone might think of her recent-time remixes, good or bad, a lot of it is also based around her songs with OPN. to put it crudely, kya teer maar liya after she left OPN?

actually, somewhat ironic to hear that she achieved so much even into contemporary times. dont we have any problem now in making those fine distinctions between commercial success and musical achievements? have we already forgotten the Marketing-And-Music-Dont-Mix mantra?

Who is thakur saab 😕
Anol it is already said..a person who gave such melodies is worth his arrogance. Mangesker sisters..yes they played politics but more then that gave amzing songs to us ...who can replace our kokila now....so it is bygone as per me. A celebrity who gives society so much is worth lot more then that

I think argument started as to if OP had helped some one else like Chandani mukerjee (Merre mehboob shayad aaj kuch naraj hain mujhse of kitne pass kitne door) or Suman kalyanpur or Sudha malhotra or Vani jairam (Bolle re papihara from guddi) would they been on this high...I strongly say.. yes.
Asha during her deput time was same as them now she can not be compared but this is in regard to deput time. MD polishes the singer. and his songs were beautifully composed and lyrics were just too good too.

Rest all is peace 😃
THanks for sharing your views music pulse ji
Punjini j no offense..it was just a soch vichar of each one of us. Glad we could see each other's point of view

Well CB, there i wont agree with your "crude" comment. Asha gave fantastic music with SDB and RDB.

Anol, u must be a mind-reader. i was headed here if i was moderating this since i feel there are valid points on both sides of the "Do a Celebrity / Performing Artist need to have a great moral character" question. but didn't really think it was my place...👏

i agree wit you. of course she had great music with SDB and RDB. ironic but that's the music i have some knowledge of, not the earlier stuff with OPN which i was defending. here, i am just going along with what i've heard folks say... and it was meant in a comparative sense, Asha/ OPN or Asha/ RDB.. meant to only show that i think her "best" stuff was with OPN, not that the other stuff wasn't fantastic...

and i was making that comparison to make a point about something raised earlier in the thread...

Had the thread started with an article on OPN's music rather than his interview, it would have taken a different turn. But his interviews with preposterous claims and sexist remarks caused a veering of the discussion towards his morals.

For those who know little about Asha's songs and think that OPN is the only one who gave her good songs, I have nothing to say.

Also for those who think any Suman K, Sudha D and Vani J can be moulded into Asha, I have nothing to say either. I have heard Asha when she had a child-like voice; the sparks of brilliance were very much there. Hers was a talent just waiting to explode and OPN came along to take the credit.

For those who think that geniuses can say whatever they please, again I have nothing to say.
