Hi Matchline
I respect your opinion about Vinit, but to me, he and Debojit represent everything that went wrong with SRGMP 2005. That Vinit and Debojit reached AgniPariksha is fine with me but that they reached the Finals is an absolute shock. I look at them and remember all those wonderful singers whom we lost on the way.

Vinit and Debojit might have been passed by judges to reach Agnipariksha, they were OK to be among top 12, but to advance beyond this, the judges (had they been properly briefed to mark various aspects of singing such as originality of voice etc) would probably not have favoured the two.

Humility is alright but I really appreciate those judges who call a spade a spade. I've noticed that the singers were singing far better when judges were judging than when public voting started.

I feel uncomfortable when judges go overboard and say "sub achcha gaa rahe hai, kisi ek ko chunna bahut mushkil kaam hai". That's wishy-washy thinking.

I love judges or mentors who are scathing in their criticism and sensible in praise. I genuinely believe that singers need such comments. Adulation and starry-eyed fans will anyway come their way - it is criticism from eminent judges that will eventually educate them. Giving 10 out of 10 to these singers is like making a travesty of music.

Oops I got sucked into the Vinit-Debojit debate again despite my strong resolutions! It's the SRGMP structure that needs to be discussed. 😳

Not True..ID did not ask for punlic votes on the basis of music. Infact, he was always talking about Debojit's "guzri ma" and openly said that assam can make Debojit win. also he staged a drama of a walk-out which just shows how lowly he can drop. as far as AS and JL fighting with judges is concerned, i think that no one had fought as much as ID. remember when adesh was talking critisizing himani and saying that he won't say that her singing touched his heart. ID started fighting for no reason when AS had said nothing about ID or debo. this is just 1 of many cases where ID started a fight. AS and JL only argued when they did not agree with a particular judgement or comment directed towards them or their students. ID put words into people's mouths and started fighting for no reason.

when did ID start talking about "guzri ma"? as much as I remeber, only a couple of times and that only during the last couple of episodes after the walkout. most of the time, he said whoever sings well, vote for him/her. I have the recorded episodes so I can at least say this that ID unfairly (at least to me) overpraised the other gharanas over his own.

"this is just 1 of many cases where ID started a fight"

Can u please provide the other cases?

"AS and JL only argued when they did not agree with a particular judgement or comment directed towards them or their students."

When Twinkle was selected over Himani, Himani was selected over Sanchali, Debo was selected over Abhijeet, I don't remember the judges (Khayyam and Sanu) saying anything bad about any of those contestants before showing the yellow, blue card or green card. They gave their verdict just like any of the previous judges had done. So I don't see what comment was directed towards them (AS or JL) or their students. Moreover, Khayyam has more exprerience than them, so questioning his decision rudely in public didn't reflect well on either AS or JL.

😊

" is he supposed to be psychic that he were to know from before that one state would start voting more than others only for a person from their region. "

don't need to be psychic at all. but u need common-sense to figure out that with public voting and with no restrictions on multiple voting, what we have today is very much possible (in fact, it happened). rajiv survived for 4 rounds where in 1 of the episodes, he got higher votes than Nihira and Hema so I don't see what all the fuss is about.

"do u think that it was right for hemachandra and nihira to get out in that manner? if not then why does AS not have the right to question it?"

yes, it's completely fair that hema and nihira r out as per the rules of the game that is called agnipariksha. so AS has no right to question it since he agreed to it. I said public voting sucks but the point is once the contestants and members agreed to it knowing the rules and the potential consequences, they should be playing by the rules and not cry foul when conditions are not favorable.

To Punjini,

I really appologize for arguing with another member regarding the mentor issue on your thread. Your thread is excellent and I have given some suggestions for future challenges.

Anyway, I will try not to argue any further (it's just that I saw some things that I found very contradictory and so replied).

and I am happy to see more sensibility in this thread even after going past 25 pages (punjini to note that we had had a brief discussion about this earlier if you recall when you thought i found this boring .. My response to your pm)

agreed.

but I will try my best not to play the role of the gladiator (even though most threads in this forum ultimately "mutate" into amphitheatres) 😉. since this thread is dedicated to a very specific issue and doesn't leave much room for drawing swords, I will try not to digress from the main topic, even though barbarian intruders (like the 1 u might have witnessed with the mentor discussion) ultimately forces me to mobilize my legions.

people (especially shehzaadi91) this is meant to be a joke. don't read too much into it, please. 😃

Hi Friend17

Your suggestions are good, and hopefully will be noted by the SRGMP organisers since I've emailed this link to the organisers.

Arguing logically is the sign of a civilized, developed society. "Tark" or Debate has been the mainstay of Hindu philosophers from centuries. That is why we have so many schools of thought, sects and so many treatises/texts.

So keep arguing! Let's keep the discussions lively.

it takes two to denigrate an argument
apparently friend17 you are well endowed in your powers and prowess of expressions . the ones that merely have one agenda viz to digress and vulgarise can easily be weeded out of any thread and that thread can then be purged and vitiated
Each of us have different MO to deal with such situations .. I am vesuvian
you on the other hand offer ample notice that you arent interested in addressing stupidity( bring it on to me ill handle it)and that is just ok .. No reason to stultify a good healthy discussion and deprive folks like me of some expertise and fresh knowledge
Forum away friend 17😛

Thanks to both Punjini and Shantibai. 😛

Shantibai, u have a pretty unique style of writing, I must say. your posts serve as a pretty good vocabulary refresher course. keep it up!

Sinha ji's comment is well written.

It's very true that person with positive attitude and dedication always win people's heart. They don't have to beg for votes to win.

Dear All

Saregamapa Challenge 2005 had a completely new format from the earlier years and was watched by far more people than ever before. It was exciting, inspiring, emotional, yet often unjust, irritating and even downright funny.

Now, we should give ideas to the Saregamapa organisers to devise a new format whereby real talent gets rewarded and biases are reduced to a minimum. The winners of the challenge in 2006 should find the going even more tough and exacting. So let's give our ideas.

For starters, I would say:

1)A panel consisting of Shaan, Gajendra Singh and a few others should do the initial screening of candidates based on the cassette recordings sent by candidates. Let's say 50 are selected.

2) 5 gharanas should be set up and 10 candidates put in each gharana. My choices for the mentors would be Jatin-Lalit, Shankar Mahadevan, A.R. Rahman, Ismail Darbar and Shiv-Hari. Of course, it would be too much to expect all these people to agree to give their dates!

3) Out of the 50, we can filter the contestants based on public voting and bring down the number to 10.

4) Now a panel of distinguished judges from the musical world should come into focus. These judges should be given a good briefing about what judging is all about. A format should be made whereby a weighted ranking is given to various aspects of singing such as sur, taal, breathing, variation from original song, dance movements etc. The marks given by each judge should be shown on screen. Over several weeks of singing, the candidates can be eliminated until one girl and one boy are left standing. So there should be two 1st prize winners.

Would love to hear more ideas.
