don't worry! as sahir ludhiyanvi aptly said in a song:

"gyaan kii kaisii siimaa gyaanii

gaagar mein saagar kaa paanii"

nobody can claim to be gyaanii (i know it's a bold statement). so you are not alone, we all are in the same boat!😊

SD Burman - even if he had sung 10 songs only - Music lovers will listen to those 10 songs, 10 times a day for 10 generations...
Long live SDB's voice/Pancham's music..

Let me start the proceedings...sinhaji very good post indeed.
To judge a composer's success...one has to wait atleast 10 years...if you still want to listen to his songs he belongs to the class.
Humse hai muqabla, very hit movie from ARR. title song huge hit..gopala song huge hit. But now its only sun ri sakhi that has stood talll after these many years.
Same with HR, give him 10 years time...you would say "who is HR by the way"?? Shelf life is too short...in biochemistry language. its always quality that would matter in the long run...
another example is SD burman as a singer...how many songs he has actually sung...does it matter. How he sung those song, ask any music lover.
I rest my case.

By the way, here in this forum where only Music lovers can be seen, I would like to make a request..
We shall not attach any prefix like donkey, monkey, ass, stray dog, orangutan, mongrel etc to HR though we are so much tempted to do so. We are doing disservice to so many of these noble creatures.
If in future there is a pressing need to refer to some XYZ with a fitting prefix when scolding, it has to be that HR XYZ.
You get what you mean...
This is the biggest service that we can do to this HR Himesh...

Quality vs Quantity --- everyone knows. No debate!

I just want to say when Lord Krishna has to join in the giant battle of Mahabharat he was with Padavas rather than Kauravas.

Needless to say the numbers and the result.

take example of lata mangeshkar herself who gave music to only 5-6 marathi movies (by name "aanandaghana"). each one of her songs is a gem.

You should not count movies from Zayed Khan, Mithun, Mimoh et al.

I came across a no. of posts where people say that coming years belong to HR since he has more than 35 movies in hand. There are two questions : do composers like ID/ARR get less offers? and secondly which songs do we remember.I dont need to say that Roja came in early 90s still we are refreshed by its songs despite ARR having worked for not more than 25 Hindi films. Also ID has given music in 6-7 Hindi films but we all highly appreciate the quality of HDDCS music. We all want the participants to sing albela sajan aayo re.despite so many songs being churned everyday like chukki ka aata.Coming to next Q do they get less ofers: A BIG NO.It is interesting to note that after HDDCS actually ID got offer for more than 32 movies still he refused them because he wanted to focus on Subhash Ghai's project KISNA.

It is well known that ID takes atleast 5-10 days to record ONE song, Jatin Pandit is known to be a tough task master and he made Kavitaji do more than 10 retakes when song ye dil sun raha hai was being recorded.Probably quality & quantity don't go hand in hand. One big name which leaps to my mind is Salil Chaudhary who has not given music in more than 20 Hindi fims( though he was a big name in Bengal music industry) but is counted in the league of genius, infact most of the music premis hold opinion that his songs should be given to the finalists to test them. There are other HUGE names like Shiv_Hari, Ravindra Jain, Khayyam: who depitehaving worked in less no. of films are counted as brilliant. Having said this I don't want to take away credit from giants like RD Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal & Illaiya Raja who have done massive no. of scores & have maintained very good quality.May I mention one name whom Im observing closely: he is Kartik Raja (son of Illaiya Raja), though he has done only few Hindi movies like Grahan, 16 December, Ive huge expectations from him. I hope he gets a lot of beaks like ARR.

how come i miss your articles..

very well said..I think this is a learniong for HR.. ID sacrificed 32 offers, to concentrate on KISNA.. and then people int he forum has doubts over his credibility...come on guys..he is real and it is reflected on his attitude and compostions...he is little rude... and beleive if u work hard in your field , you automatically get some arrogance..i am not supporting that however he is a genuine guy...

long live ID.. and i have no objections if he is give one movie like HDCCS and KISNA, out every 5 movies he make...first of all master pieces cannot be created at will..they jsut happen and he has to do something for his livelihood...he has to earn money man.....

i would definitely agree ID is honest. he declined 32 offers as he probably thought he wouldn't be able to do justice to them.

on a related note i remember a story from naushad's interview. producers of "azaad" wanted him to as a MD. they wanted all the songs done in a week and were ready to pay exorbitant amount. naushad, knowing that he won't be able to do justice, politely declined and suggested they should go to c. ramachandra instead.

c. ramachandra was at the peak of his career. he demanded 1 lakh rupees for this work. and he got it (and thus became the first MD to get Rs. 1 lakh for a movie). the rest is history.

both great MDs, honest to their work.
