I haven't visited IF in such a long time, but well, I just finished my exams and topped in all my courses :D and my university applications are going pretty well, so I thought I would write a oneshot to celebrate. So here it goes:
Tia and Ranveer's family sans Ranveer loved shopping. They always knew the difference between Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik shoes. They always, always, always knew that if they wanted really good shoes for prom or evening parties, they should go to Louis Vuitton instead of Dolce & Gabbana.
Ashi and Yuvi didn't like shopping. But they had a routine, like they always did. Yuvi would always come home first, and by the time he would change into something a little more comfortable, she would be back. They could communicate on a level higher than words, and they were always proud that they could do that. He would ask if she wanted to go out, and most of the time, she would silently put her coat on and take her purse. She knew that going out didn't mean to a dinner or a movie, because then he would say so.
They hated shopping, they really did. But they would love to walk, walk, walk through the isles of clothes, and maybe if they were feeling happy, he would clutch her hand tightly and never let go. And sometimes, when he saw something he really liked for her, he would take it off the isle and hand it to her. And he knew, even before she would come out of the changing room that he was buying it for her anyway.
And on those rare, rare, rare days that they needed something from the shops, they had a hard time finding out. Because they were so used to roaming mindlessly through the isles and because they were so very used to wanting rather than needing that it took them so very long to find what they needed.
But they were Anvesha Banerjee Ray and Yuvraj Dev. So they wanted to change.
She allowed herself to dream of a white gown and a house in the countryside where they had to share the newspaper because it always came late. She allowed herself to do a little dance in the bathroom the day after he had proposed, simply because she was truly happy. And he allowed himself to think about having her by his side for the rest of his life, and he allowed himself to think that even though he had to buy a tux, he could finally make a choice that didn't involve his father or his family.
But they were Anvesha Banerjee Ray and Yuvraj Dev. So they couldn't change.
That should have been the first sign, really. That needing something for life is never, ever, ever a good idea.
So after the nonexistent wedding that never happened, Tia picked her up and tried to cheer her up by taking her shopping. She didn't mind, really, because it would mean that she had something else, no matter how trivial, to think about. But Tia didn't roam around the isles like she did. She ran around the mall excitedly, she squealed after seeing a new pair of shoes that were expensive, yet beautiful, and she excitedly blabbered on about the significance or the difference between the two gowns hanging from the mannequin. And Ashi tried, she tried really, really, really hard to not tell her to shut up because she was ruining the whole damn thing about shopping.
It was around the same time that Yuvi called Ranveer, and he came over with two cans of beer and a photo album of the olden days. His eyes were questioning, but he sat through the whole night without asking a single thing. He flipped through the album and drank with his sort of best friend, and at least he had the decency to stay silent, because that was the most important thing.
So, at the end of the day, it didn't really matter if Tia and Ranveer's family sans Ranveer loved shopping, because with Ashi and Yuvi it wasn't about the actual shopping. It was about holding someone's hand who was really close to you and communicating through silence, and it was about knowing that there was one person next to you with exactly the same thoughts as you, and it was about realizing that the aimless wander around the shopping malls was the hardest and the biggest and even the most happiest thing they had done in their lives.
And Ranveer never really told Ashi that her nonexistent husband-to-have-been was never coming back, because she had never wanted to know things which she hadn't specifically asked for. But she figured it out anyway, because she knew, just like he did, how to read the subtle language of silence most of the times. She should've known about their relationship too, that the silence that had gotten them so close could break them up so badly. But she didn't think they would fall apart because of silence, because what kind of relationship disintegrates on something such trivial?
But everything, everything, everything did fall apart and sometimes Ashi found herself wishing that she had talked just a little bit more, and Yuvi found himself wishing that he had invited her to go shopping with him some more times.
And every time someone brought up that stupid, stupid, stupid nonexistent wedding, Ashi couldn't help but kind of picture herself in that damned white gown she had needed to buy, and Yuvi couldn't help but be kind of jealous when he saw happily married couples on the road.
They were Anvesha Banerjee Ray and Yuvraj Dev. So they couldn't help but die just a little more inside.
And every time Ashi thought about the one last shirt of his that he had mistakenly left behind in her closet, and every time Yuvi wanted to call someone up and just explain why, their eyes got kind of blurred.
And everyday when it seemed like it was going to be a bad day and all they wanted to do was shop, shop, shop, their hearts kind of broke.
Well, like it? Please tell me if you don't or do, okay? And I have my winter break now so if you want, I will keep posting! :D
Happy reading,
Shreyasi
