Hrithik-Zayed to be Ram-Laxman
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, July 07, 2009]

Yes, it's true! Hrithik Roshan and Zayed Khan are to be featured as the mythological characters in Sanjay Khan's 'The Legend of Rama'. The movie is going to be co-scripted by Zayed's father and Hrithik's father-in-law Sanjay Khan and Briton-based author Faroukh Dhondy. And any guess who will don the King Dashrath's role? The Bollywood daddy, Amitabh Bachchan!

With the script in its final stages, Faroukh Dhondy feels that both Hrithik and Zayed are perfect for the role of Ram and Laxman respectively. He terms the movie as a modern format of Ramayan. "It's not a modern but a traditional adaptation but with the grammar of a modern films. This means it would be the Ramayan in The Lord of the Rings genre," he adds.

Hmm, wonder how these stunning, handsome heroes will look with bows and arrows.

Ramayan Returns: Hrithik to play the Lord Rama

Sanjay Khan, a secular Muslim whose family members have married into every conceivable religion and community and who once produced a controversial television serial on the life of the notorious Islamic invader Tipu Sultan, is all set to do his own big-screen take on the Ramayan.

Throwing light on this precious epic project Sanjay Khan's son Zayed says, "Yes, my father is indeed making the Ramayan. It's called The Legend Of Rama.

He has been planning this film for three years. But he needed the perfect Rama. And who but Hrithik would be perfect for the role? Earlier Hrithik had no dates. But now he's doing very selected films."

As for Zayed as Laxman the young actor who will be seen as the pampered younger brother Subhash Ghai's Yuvraaj chuckles, "Playing Laxman in one form or another is the story of my life."

Amitabh Bachchan had been approached to play Dashrath two years ago. And it's likely that he would continue being functional in that role.

The Legend Of Rama co-scripted by Sanjay Khan and Briton-based author Faroukh Dhondy will feature the producer-director's superstar son-in-law Hrithik Roshan as Rama and Sanjay Khan's only son Zayed as Laxman.

Dhondy who's currently in Mumbai to put finishing touches to the script. "The script is ready. Hrithik is the perfect Rama and Zayed the perfect Laxman. I'd love them to do it. It's the Ramayan in modern format. It's not a modern but a traditional adaptation but with the grammar of a modern films.

This means it would be the Ramayan in The Lord Of The Rings genre. The screenplay has the motion motivation and movement of a Shakespearean play.

When you do a Mahabharat, Ramayan or any other scripture the danger is, it just becomes…. the Gods did this Gods did that because the Gods can do anything they like.

That's why you are taught in writing school to never include Gods in your creativity. I'm trying to rationalize the ways of the Gods."

Interestingly, Raj Kumar Santoshi had announced the Ramayan with Ajay Devan, Kajol and Riteish Deshmukh as Rama, Sita and Laxman.

The project was shelved. Some years ago an ambitious filmmaker made Luv –Kush with Jeetendra and Jaya Prada as Rama and Sita. It flopped. And this year Ekta Kapoor's ambitious serial Mahabharat floundered and fell from the TRPs.

But now Sanjay Khan is determined to break the jinx on the mythologicals.

Sorry to all Hritik fans. I think he is a great actor but I don't want this Ramayan to be made. Period. We all know how Bollywood would distort this great epic of ours.

Bollywood just stay away from our great epics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The tv versions have been heavily distorted so why complain about Bollywood only? Let's demand that there should be no adaptation of the epics in any film medium. 😳

Let them make the epic. It's not like it will replace the original or anything. Amitabh Bachchan is a fantastic choice for Dasaratha. But please not Zayed. That guy's a horrible actor. 😒

Hrithik does have a great look but he should use make up to look darker as Rama.

Sorry Kal, have to disagree with you here again. I don't have a problem with the making of the Ramayan. Hrithik is a great actor but he is not going to live the role like Gurmi did. Yes, Sagars did goof up the script.

However, the Sagars had one thing in their Ramayan that Bollywood is going to lack. Despite the goofs in the script the Sagars had a lot of devotion and this devotion showed through in their cast, crew, the sets, costumes, and the songs. U will not find this devotion and shradda in the Bollywood version.

Ramayan is not just a story of a king and queen. It is a religious work describing the Ram avatar of Vishnuji. Not only that it is also a vedantic work. Most of our vedanta philosophy is embedded in the Ramayan. Somehow u seem to be missing this very important point. I am not saying this to hurt your feelings or to be mean. Just my observation from your posts.

Also, u can see the lack of devotion or Bhakti already in the interview. They r going to "rationalize the way of the Gods." Nice! Let's trash the epic already! Who cares about the feelings of millions of Hindus worlwide!

It could be hard to beat our lotus-eyed Gurmeet, if possible at all. Who else has bow-shaped lips? Has such nice voice? Plus, right, Gurmi has devotion, which matters...

I will never say that no one can live the role of Ram like Arun Govil or Gurmeet, because there are soooo many great actors in the world and should they be given the opportunity, they may also live the role just as well as Arunji and Gurmeet, but I do not think Hritik has it in him to do a devotional role. He is a great actor, yes, and I do enjoy his movies, but Ramayan is different from typical Bollywood movies and I do not trust Hritik to show the soft emotions and devotion of Ramji that is required for the role. He'd make a better Ravan, in my opinion.
As for Lakshman, I don't really think Zayed can do it as well as Sunilji or Ankit, but Lakshman's role is a more fiery tempered one, so who knows?
I agree with Khalrika that Ramayan is not merely a historical story about an ideal King or Queen. It is foremost a religious tale of one of the avatars of Lord Vishnu and Mata Lakshmi, and then it is a historical story. So what if the Sagars goofed up the script in some places? Which director hasn't? But the Sagars are the only directors who show bhakti rasa in their stories and hand pick their actors, not just any popular Bollywood type people. No one has made Ramayan that touched its viewers' hearts like the Sagars did, with both the Old and New version. Sure, both have had its fair share of mistakes, but only the Sagars' Ramayans make me feel like we're actually witnessing the Lord's story on Earth. No Ramayan movie or any other serial has done that to me, and I certainly do not trust some Bollywood movie to do that.
Like Khalrika said, it already seems like Bollywood is spicing up this Ramayan to suit their tastes.🤢 I do not like that one bit. Why don't they just leave our epic alone instead of constantly picking at it?😒 Tales like the Ramayana and Mahabharata should only be handled by capable directors, and I do not find Bollywood to be capable of directing something so holy as one of the greatest epics of India.

However, I do trust Amitabh Bhachan to handle the role of Raja Dasharath well.

In my opinion, my answer is "no" to Hrithik as Rama! "No" to bollywood version of Ramayan! I don't know the other Khan guy who will portray Lakshman! Enough versions of Ramayan already! They should give it a rest for now. Maybe in another 20 years, they can revisit again😊
