I have a different question re: the Shiva-Sati story.
When Shiva got news of Sati's self-immolation, he tore off a strand of his hair and split it in 2. From one of them arose Virbhadra, who was the one who trounced Indra and Vishnu and killed Daksha: the other was Mahakali, who led the ganas and routed not just the devas, but also the asuras that Rishi Bhrigu, who was the presiding priest of the yagna, invoked to save the yagna.
So if Mahakali's existance dates back to the post-Sati, pre-Parvati era, how is Mahakali sometimes represented as a manifestation of Parvati, the same way Devi Durga is?
