I remember seeing a movie like that too. I don't remember if it was Tamil or Telugu. There is a movie by name Ravan / Ravana / Ravanan - not sure which. I think the storyline is somewhat the same.

I also remember seeing a movie in which Ravan kidnaps Sita knowing that she is his daughter (saying that she was suffering in the forests and he kidnaps her to make her live comfortably). The explanations just don't make sense.

hey vibhishna, do you know when ravana kidnapped sita?? i mean, how long was she buried? Ravana was supposed to be really old when he kidnapped sita, so when was she actually born??

Hmm, this version of the epic is quite incredible.

No idea as to how old Ravan was when Sita was born or when she was kidnapped. I am pretty bad in Math

Ravan was said to be 1000s of years old when Ram Ravan Yudh happened, so I don't know exactly, but he was veryyyy old when he kidnapped Sita, but thanks to his boon from Lord Brahma, he always looked young.

Dashrata live for 36,000 yrs, if i'm not mistaken, and ravan fought with with dashrata's ancestor which implies that he must have been like double dashrata's age when he kidnapped sita.......probably, if i'm doing the math right.....

It is true that Ravan was ancient. The rest of the Rakshasa clan must have been old too, though they fought like they were in the prime of their youth. Akshay Kumar was the youngest of Ravan's sons - though I have no idea if he was decades or centuries old.

In Raghuvamsa (by Kalidasa), the scene of Indumati's Swyamvara is described very well. As she passes by each king with a garland in her hand, someone speaks of the king's achievements and prowess. It is mentioned that kings from Southern India had also attended this ceremony. It was mentioned that the Pandya King who had attended the wedding had protected his kingdom and the rest of South India from Ravan and Ravan does not come near Tamil Nadu due to the fear of the Pandyas.

Also come to think of it, I have read that Ravan did try to conquer the Tamil Kingdoms but was thwarted each time and never managed it.

I wonder what all places did Ravan conquer. He is supposed to have conqured heaven and earth but it seems that there were so many places - neighbouring territories that he was never able to defeat.

He did not conquer South India, I know that for sure. not only was he beaten by the kings ruling here but also by Sage Aghasthya in a music contest as well (In the movie Sampoorna Ramayanam, Ravan says that he stopped playing the veena after being defeated by Sage Aghasthya. In the Tamil versions of the Ramayana, Ravan's flag has the veena as the symbol and he is referred to as the one with the veena flag. Veena is a stringed instrument popular in South India.). It was also said that Ravan after this defeat did not dare come near Tamil Nadu again.

As far as I know I cannot recall any account saying that he won over the Middle and East India either. But his relatives were rampant there - Khar, Dushan and Shurpanakha after she was widowed lived there.

He came North to fight against Anaranya but left without anexing the Solar Kingdom after killing him? This was something I have been thinking about ever since I saw that episode and read the chapters of this incident.

Does any book speak of his conquests in particular?

Thanks.😃
The last one is from the Telugu Mega Hit movie Magadheera, which was released in 2009 and became the highest budgeted film in all of Tollywood (and I think 2nd highest in all of India, but I'm not sure) and became/still is super famous. It stars Ramcharan Teja (son of Mega Star Chiranjeevi, heard of him?) and Kajal Aggarwal.
The story's basically about this Royal family who is all reincarnated in the modern age after losing their lives fighting a war. The hero, Ramcharan, plays a double role as Kalabhairava (the warrior from the past) and Harsha (the reincarnation of Kalabhairava) while Kajal plays the role of Mitravinda (the princess from the past) and Indumati (the reincarnation of Mitravinda). It's about how the evil from the past was also reincarnated and how it is defeated in the modern age.
It's a really good movie and was supposed to be dubbed into Tamil as Maaveeran. Has it been dubbed yet? It's on youtube, HQ, with subtitles if you're interested in watching it. The technology in the movie is really impressive too.
Lol, you can prob tell by now that I'm obsessed with the movie.😆 Am getting Avis made from it soon too.

hmm.....but in kamban's version, ravana's standard is the veena because he was an undefeated master of the art, but this story of agastya defeating ravana is new to me.
plus, isn't the whole pandya ancestory part of history? its supposed to be credible, right? but, ravana or the whole ramayana for that matter is part of mythology, so how do you work that one out?
