Vibs, I saw the local temple calendar today. Ram Navami falls sometime on March 24th this year. March 24th is Punarvasu. Pushya falls on March 25th and Aslysha on March 26th. If this is the order of the Indian calendar then Bharat was born the next day after Punarvasu in Pushya. Lakshmana and Shatrughna were born the day after that in Asleysa.

If Ramji was born on day 1 then Bharat was born on day 2. Lakshman and Shatrughna were born on day 3. Lakshman comes first.

Lalitha, I think later poets and writers interpreted the 1/4 th and 1/8th each portions of Vishnu to mean Shanka, Chakra, and Adishesha. This is strictly IMHO but it think that could be possible. I wonder if Tulsidas and others did that.
I do not know too much about Tulsi Ramayan.

Thanks a lot Khalrika.

Lalitha Janaki, Kambaramayanam depicts Bharat, Lakshman and Shathrugan as the Conch, Adisesha and Sudarshan Chakra. I am not sure about other versions. I thought that this is what all versions put forth till I read the translation of VR. One more thing is that, Kamban describes The conch as Panchajanya. The name Panchajanya comes from the Mahabharat, right? When Krishna defeats the demon who dwelled in this shell and kept terrorizing those who swam the waters. I think it was when Krishna went in search of Guru Sandipani's son. I am not that good with Mahabharat but I think it was this incident. What was Lord Vishnu's Chakra called? Was it Panchajanya right from the beginning? Or did the name come up from Mahabharat?

Vibs, It is called Panchajanya right from the beginning. It comes out when the Samudra is churned (the churning of the ocean story). His chakra is called Sudarshana Chakra.

Watching today's episode rerun, where Vali humiliates Ravan, and the story of Vali and Mayavi is recounted brought up some questions:
  • I found the confrontation b/w Vali & Roma charming, but wonder, is it there in the Ananda Ramayan or anywhere, or is that one more of those Sagar inventions? Particularly the scene where Vali masquerades as Sugriv to make out w/ Roma.
  • In the episode, they showed Vali breaking in during Sugriv's rajyabhishek. But in pg 771 of Gita press, Sugriv tells Rama that he was ruling w/ justice when one day, Vali came home. Do the other accounts of this incident have Vali interrupting Sugriv during his coronation, or breaking in sometime later when Sugriv was ruling?
  • I found it curious that when Rama twang his bow, everything reverberated, but somehow, Vali and the vanaras didn't get to hear any of this šŸ˜•
  • Next week, they show a bunch of Vanaras trying to assasinate Sugriv, and Rama shattering their assault. Is there any account of this in any of the Ramayans? While Sugriv did flee to Rishimukh, Vali, after not following him there, gave up the hunt for him. Or didn't he?

Interesting questions, Vrisha! Not so long ago I got my hands on an academic translation of "Ramacharitmanas" . So, I can take a look if any of these events are there.
BTW. In that academic translation I found a lot of footnotes dedicated to different plants. Translator was an academic ( a good one!) so he matched almost all plants names with their Latin names . So I put plant's names in spreadsheet and called it " Gerbarium of Ramacharitmanas". If you are interested I can post it here.
