Friends, this question came up in the Tamil Ramayanam Thread. I have no answer to this. Can anyone help?

V.B,

There is a story that goes where Lord Rama has to cross a river during his 14 year sojourn at the forest. He is hungry and asks the fisherman for some food. The fisherman says I only have some grapes, can you please share with me?
Rama gladly accepts.
He eats half of each grape, and the fisherman eats the other half.
At which point, there is a poem called meethe meethe chaak chaak.
Have you heard of this poem?
If so can you please divulge??

Lalitha, u can get Valmiki Ramayan from Gita Press. It is very good. I bought it from Gita press from right here in the US. Just go to their website. I googled Gita press and got the link. Also, U can get Ramcharitmanas also from the US. Go to Chinmaya Mission US (I went to Chinmaya Mission West as I live on the west coast) and clicked on their link to "Publications" I think that is how the link is named. I think they have an English translation.

Yesterday, I finally got hold of Srimad Valmiki Ramayan, from Gita Press. This was @ the Kolkata Book Fair, which ends today, and I also got hold of a Krittivas Ramayan (Bengali). The prices were fantastic - Rs150 for each of the 2 volumes of Valmiki, and Rs 100 for the Krittivas version.

The Valmiki Ramayan has the original Sanskrit, followed by English translations, but skips transliterations altogether (unlike ValmikiRamayan.net). The Krittivas version, otoh, is written in poetry format in 14/15th century Bengali, and no translations, which makes it slow for me, since my Bengali ain't fluent. But it would be interesting to see what variations they have as well from Valmiki, Vyasa, Kamban & Tulsidas. But it'll probably take me a while.

I remember reading somewhere that Sushen was Tara's father (that makes him Vali's father-in-law) but I don't know how true it is.

Also Hanuman's father Kesari aided this campaign with his own army and he too participated in the war. I think Kesari was the king of a province called Sumer - not sure about this.

In Jai Hanuman, they showed a different story from what we have seen in NDTVI Ramayan. Here they showed that Vali was the reason for the death of Mayavi's wife. In Jai Hanuman Mayavi seeks Vali for killing his brother Dhundubi. And as per this story, it was Ravan who sent Dhundubi to kill Vali.

The story of Jai Hanuman is so different. 😕

I will check this out in Valmiki Ramayan Vibs.

That is a great price Vrisha! I am looking around for cheaper copies of the various versions of the Ramayan. I prefer the book format. I guess I am old fashioned. 😆😆😆 Only my copies should have English translations. The only Indian languages I can read are Hindi and Tamil. So, happy hunting to myself! 😆 Let us know if there are some major changes, from the Valmiki, Vyas, Kamban, or Tulsidas, in the Krittivas Ramayan.

^^^^^^^Khalrika

That's right. These were the book versions, and all hardbound and everything. I did get a great deal.

I'll let you know what's changed as I read. With me, English is the only language I'm fluent in reading/writing, while I can read Hindi and Bengali. Unfortunately, the Krittavas version doesn't have translations, so I'll work it out accordingly. The table of contents does tell me a great deal, though.

Great News! I have always wanted to know what the Krittivas Ramayan is like. Though I am happy you found a treasure, it also makes me jealous 😉 (jus' kiddin')

Enjoy reading them and share it with us, brother. 😊
