Ananya, why was the Kusa grass singled out for so much prominence in the Hindu religion compared to other grass species? Was it because it was probably found in abundance in India during the early times? Do u know?

Not just availability but its physical properties is what makes Kusha grass so important.
The rigveda, atharva veda, ayurveda and astrology describe the importance of Kusha and durva grasses.
In Ayurveda it is known to cure stomach ailments and Kapha dosha. Astrology prescribes "Kusha-bhasma" for warding off evil effects caused by Ketu whose position isn't favorable in a horoscope.
and Atharvaveda and Rigveda term it as a purifier and a link between u and ur ancestors.

This is one doubt I had wanted to ask for a long time but kept forgetting. Any Ramayan movie or serial, we find a Pushpvatika scene - a scene where Ram and Sita see each other for the first time, even before the breaking of the bow. Is this scene described in the Valmiki Ramayan?

Vibs:
Rama meeting Sita predominantly appears in RCM ,I think even Kamban writes that Sita and Rama glance at each other before her swayamvar.
Valmiki Ramayana doesn't have it. In VR Rama-Sita do not even garland each other at their marriage , only Kanyadanam and tri-padi (going round the fire thrice not seven times as its done now a days)
The custom of garlanding was followed by gandharvas and was adopted by people of Aryavarta later.

Ananya, thanks so much for the info. My son used to watch this cartoon. show called Pinky and the Brain when he was little. I am gonna change it to Ananya the Brain. 👏👏👏

The pushpa vatika scene is from RCM. It is sooooooooooooooo beautiful. I have the 2 volumes of RCM that I bought from Chinmaya Mission. The original is translated into regular day-to-day Hindi to make it easier for people like me. 😆😆😆

Even the ordinary version is so beautiful. One day I will brush up on my literary Hindi skills to enjoy the original....one day...whenever that day is...so many things to do...so little time.

Thank you Ananya.

Even I haven't read this scene described in the books that follow Valmiki Ramayan strictly.

Kamban describe the scene really beautifully but the only difference is that Sita is in the balcony looking out into the garden and playing with her friends and Ram walks past below and they look at each other.

You're very much right on the last part, Khalrika ji. I too am trying to learn faster to read the original.

As far as RCM goes, the Vedanta soc bookstore has a thick book that has every verse in the original Hindi, transliterated and then translated. It's a fantastic source if you want to refer it, and saves you the trouble of having to learn Hindi in advance. In fact, once you've read that, your shudh Hindi skills would be much improved.

I just wish something like that existed for Valmiki - from the Sanskrit to the English.

In Appendix A, it even has a kanda called 'Luv-Kush Kand'. The story there is completely different from what the Valmiki UttarRamayan has.

Price tag: $80/-
