Point taken. Good explanation. I didn't think of this before.

Bharat had his own kingdom here? Which was it - Gandhara, Kekaya or some other? And how was that, if he was yuvraj? Or if he did have his own kingdom, then who was the Yuvraj of Ayodhya? Lakshman?

I am not sure. I haven't read it all in detail.

Okay, I agree that this is unreal!

Thanks for whatever you did post - this part looks okay to me.

I haven't read Kamban. Some time, I hope to read Krittivas, if I can get a hold of it.

I hope to read all versions and can't wait to get hold of it all.

Sorry for the delayed response. I almost missed this post.

Your guess is as good as mine, but it would boil down to the question of whether Sita wanted Rama more than she didn't want to be queen of Ayodhya. I tend to think that if the prajas, for whatever reason, had raised no more questions (say they believed the sung version of Valmiki from her kids, or say the Bhavabhuti version is right and they saw her relieve Rama) and Rama had invited her back, she'd have accepted it, as it would have given her back her Rama. I don't believe she liked leaving for Rasootal, but her choices were pretty much forced on her.

Definitely, Sita would have wanted to be Ram's wife more than being the queen of Ayodhya. But then, could she or Ram be sure that there would be no more such gossips? If not from Ayodhya, they could arise elsewhere, after all Ram was the king of almost the whole of Aryavratta, and his tale would be known to people. There are chances there are such dhobis in every village, infact each street. If not this one, the other one would talk.....
And there was no way Ram could move away from the limelight, meaning if Sita was with him, limelight also falls on her. And within themselves, they would always have been conscious of whats going on about them, so life would not have been the same. So I still feel Sita may have taken the same decision.
If she had wanted Ram, I believe she would have gone thro a 2nd agnipariksha easily, bcoz she knew her power and was capable of taking any number of parikshas, right?

Rama wasn't the king of all Aryavarta - just Ayodhya. He was recognized as an 'overlord' emperor by all other rulers i.e. other Kings based their foreign relations on his policies: they allied with him, and avoided his enemies. This doesn't mean that their internal goings-on were his headache. In other words, if people in, say, Mithila, wanted him to step down, he'd not have been under any such compulsion. He was only bound by what the people of Kosala/Ayodhya wanted.

Emperors like Rama, Jarasandha, Yudhisthir - this was the extent of their power. It didn't make them responsible for the internal affairs of their allies.

P.S. My comparison was - Sita wanting to be with her family vs NOT wanting to become the queen of Ayodhya again.

Yeah why didn't she just do that. Take another Agni pariksha or some other oath, we would had our happy ending. But I guess that defeats the purpose of the moral of this story.

I guess what Ram is saying that if you don't have trust it doesnt matter how many pariksha's you take the trust is still lost forever. And also from Sita's point of view is it ok for her to be humiliated just to remain queen of Ayodhya. How great was her love for her beloved Ram, at what cost would she undergo this humiliation just to be with him. They would be together still by soul even if they dont live together, but by Subjecting Sita to another Pariksha would their relationship be ever the same or as pure and true. He would have to witness her humiliation, which would subject him to a life long guilt that he had to do that to her, and she would have to subject herself to this humiliation and she would never be able to look him in the eye or even face her family or her prajja because either they would feel sorry for her or they would still doubt her and she would spend the rest of her life worrying and dreading.

In the end that is what happened. Ram I think to some extent got desperate seeing Sita, he was like she is here I cant loser her now, I can be with her all she has to do is give one last test. But Sita knew it would not work and remembered her reason for being banished in the first place, it is like they were back in square one and she had no choice but to leave him.
