I thought the Uttar Kand ends with Ram leaving this world. Isn't that so? If it is, who wrote, sang and publicised the rest of the events that happened after the recital of Kush an dLav?

Here is what Valmiki has: (for the record, I find it a little tough to digest that everyone would know in advance how things progress, and yet behave no differently, like Rama accepting Kaal's proposal on killing anyone who saw them?)

[quote=Valmiki]Sarg 95 - Raam Calls Seetaa

After that those children recited that epic for several says. After the six Kaand, Raam came to know that they were Seetaa's sons, He sent two messengers to Vaalmeeeki's Aashram with the message that if Seetaa is pure and clean, then She should come and convince Ayodhyaa's public. If Seetaa wants to clear our black spot then She should come here and take vow to be clean and pure.

Sarg 98 - Brahmaa Jee Consoles Raam

Raam got very sad at disappearing of Seetaa in Rasaatal. He started weeping, then said angrily - "Our Lakshmee-like Seetaa got disappeared in front of me? If we brought Her after killing Raavan, then I can bring Her back from Rasaatal also. Hey Prithvi, Seetaa took birth from you at the time when Raajaa Janak was tilling his land. Thus you are my mother-in-law. You return my Seetaa back, otherwise you take me also there. Wherever Seetaa will live, I will also live at the same place. If you will not return my Seetaa as She was, then I will hurt you along with mountains and caves, and destroy you."

Seeing Raam so much grieved, Brahmaa said - "Hey Raam, You are the incarnation of Vishnu. You should not be so sad. Seetaa has gone to Naag Lok. You listen to this Vaalmeeki written Uttar Kaand attentively. This is very good epic. Your character is described in this epic, so you listen to its remaining part." Brahmaa Jee went away after telling this to Raam.

Raam said to Vaalmeeki Jee - "Hey Tapaswee, All Rishi Gan are curious to listen to my future. Therefore the remaining part should be recited tomorrow." Lav and Kush also went to their hut built from leaves.

Sarg 99 - Remaining Raamaayan

Next day Raam called all Muni and kings and told His sons to recite the remaining part. Lav and Kush started reciting. After Seetaa had left for Rasaatal, Raam completed His Yagya with great difficulty. He sent off all Vaanar, Raakshas and kings and came back to Ayodhyaa. He was extremely sad in Ayodhyaa. He did not remarry so in every Yagya He used to keep a gold statue of Seetaa beside Him.

I've heard (not read) parts about Kush's history from then on - his conquest of the Vindyas, his marriage to Kumudhati. I've not heard about Luv or any of the nephews' history being told there. You mentioned Luv - any account of what happened to the nephews? This is the most fascinating part of the Ramayan to me these days - the Raghuvansh successors. Particularly interesting from a history standpoint

Its very much possible that this hill might have been Gandhamadana as described in Skanda Puran which says that Gandhamadana hill was near southern sea of India.

True - it is mentioned so in the Skanda Purana. I have always felt Skanda Puran and Ramayan have an almost similar storyline.
But there are instances in the Mahabharat where the Gandamana hills are said to be in the Himalayas.
If that is the case, there might have been more than one Gandhamana Hills that existed at that time.

In the Skanda Puran, there is an episode of "Hanumath Kund" in Gandamadana Hills. These hills are also said to be a favorite spot of Lord Hanuman. In Hanumath Sahasranamavali it says "OM GANDAMADANA SAILASTHANAI NAMAHA". As per this Hanumath Kund episode, there is a description of how Gandamadana hills look.
As per the views of Prof. M A Padmanabha Rao (a researcher on ayurvedic medicine, AIIMS), the Andaman islands are more fitting here as per the below reasons.
1) It is said that these hills are in the southern sea and look like a bridge. And taking Andaman islands into consideration, it would seem fit here. In ancient times 'Aryavrata-the ancient name of India' was the region only uptil the central India that was inhabited. The region below was just thick forests not inhabited by humans. And Aryavrata extended uptil present day China and Afghan on the north east and north west sides. So the southern sea to it might most appropriately be the present Bay of Bengal. And Andamans are located in it and from above they do look like a bridge...
2) Andaman Islands have certain trees called "Guggul" which are very aromatic and were used for prayers. This supports the name for these hills "Gandamadan" which mean intoxicating with scent.
3) The very name Andaman seems to have been derived from Gandamadan....
G A N D A M A D A N
A N D A M A N
So probably the Andaman Islands were the Gandamadana mountains of the past.
There is a belief Gandamadan was situated east of Mt. Meru which was believed to be the centre of earth.
And there is another one saying it is on Mount Kailas.
But then the Gandamdan mentioned in the Mahbharat has been located somewhere in Orissa a place called "Parimalagiri" when Bhim sets out to find the thousand petalled blue lotus for Draupadi and encounters Hanuman. This Gandamadan in Mahbharat would suit Orissa more since there are no instances that the Pandavas crossed any sea or water body during their exile.
And then in the Ramayan, there is mentioned a Gandamdan where the vanar sena rests on their way back from Lanka. this would mostly be the one near Rameshwaram.
So there are chances there could have been more than one Gandamadan.

Its true that none of this information was shown in any serial or movie before. I myself had wondered wheere they got the information from. I saw very few episodes after Lord Ram entered the Sarayu. I watched it in Tamil and it was stopped abruptly. Sometime after Lav and Kush were saved from Raahu - Kush and Lav were tricked into a cave by Raahu and he sealed the cave with a huge stone. Both of them were suffocated inside and they think of Hanuman or he himself senses the danger and rescues them. That is all I remember - that was the last I saw.
In the Bhagavad Puran - I have read only about Lord Krishna's family. His progeny and about Parikshit, about Vidhur and Uddhav, there were stories of the ten avtars of Lord Vishnu in brief and many more, but I have never known that Kush and Luv and their cousins were mentioned. I haven't read the Puranas fully. I think I have to get the full version of Bhagavad Puran and read it.

Chandraketu (or anyone),

Can you please tell me the story of Kush and Kumudhati? I think it'd be pretty interesting to learn about one of Shri Ram and Sita Mata's daugters-in-law.😉 What lucky ducks, to have Ram and Sita as father-in-law and mother-in-law! But it's sad that poor Kumudhati was never welcomed into Ayodhya by Sita herself like young Sita and her sisters were by the Raj Matas.😭

Thank you very much for all the information. Some days back, there was a topic posted in which we discussed the Andaman Islands and how much possible it could be the location of the Gandhamana Mountain. I am familiar with Bheem's story too. I agree with you that there might be more than one Gandhamana Hill.
