Chapter One
"Humeiraaa!!" Zoya stomped inside their flat, closing the door with a bang.
"What happened Zoya?" Humeira walked out of the kitchen fixing her dupatta. Her eyes swayed over the carpet refusing to meet her sister's. She stared at Zoya's converses as the tip of it moved up and down. She gulped.
"Humeira, how many times have I told you not run away like that? What is wrong with you?" Zoya crossed her arms meeting Humeira's eyes. Her lips curved into a smile mirroring Humeira's. "HEY SEXY, YOU LOOKED MUCH BETTER IN JEANS" Zoya yelled chasing Humeira who had covered her ears screaming down the corridor.
"NO NO NO! LEAVE ME ALONE!" Humeira cried falling onto the bed and looked back at Zoya with a horrified face,
"Humeira, when did you start wearing those kind of jeans?" Zoya fell on top of her sister laughing. Humeira giggled under her.
"He was a pervert! I don't understand why you are always wondering around those areas." Humeira wrapped her arms around Zoya's waist and kissed her cheek. Zoya wiped her cheek and jumped up onto her feet before pulling Humeira up.
"Because I am not afraid of anyone" Zoya brushed her shoulder and walked away from Humeira as she sighed towards her back.
"What did Mark say?" Zoya nibbled on a carrot rummaging through the fridge.
"He wants both of us to go to the conference in New York!" Humeira replied putting her oven gloves on.
"DOUBLE POWER!" They both chanted knowingly. Zoya took in the sweet aroma with closed eyes as Humeira took the cake out of the oven. She ran towards her almost dropping Humeira with the cake.
"Wait, wait, wait!" Humeira defended the cake placing it safely on the counter. She tapped Zoya's hand as it came towards the cake. Zoya pouted sadly rubbing her stomach. Humeira grabbed an icing cone and threw it towards Zoya who caught it on reflex. They both crowded the cake and quietly decorated it occasionally glancing each other a look. Zoya's head snapped towards the ringing noise before rushing towards the living room. Humeira ran behind her with the cake and settled beside a round table. They were aware the cake hasn't cooled down yet but they were running late.
"10,9,8,7, ZOYA! Look this way..." Humeira scolded, "4,3,2,1..."
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZOYA!" Humeira clapped,
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TWINSY" Zoya sighed blowing out the candle with Humeira. They both looked at each other with thankfulness. Humeira crawled towards Zoya and slowly wrapped her arms around a reluctant Zoya who tensed finding her hands caging her. Humeira rocked side to side placing her chin on Zoya's shoulder to which Zoya slowly relaxed and breathed out.
"22 years and counting" Humeira whispered,
"16 years of abandonment!" Zoya gave her sister a reality check.
"Stop it you, no we are not abandoned. Uncle is with us" Humeira comforted Zoya.
"And he too abandoned us!" Zoya looked towards a picture of their elderly uncle, who had sheltered the two abandoned children found on the empty streets of Bhopal.
"Not by choice" Humeira replied, "No-one lives forever!" She sighed.
"CAKETIME" Zoya avoided the subject and cut the cake before smearing it all over her innocent sister's face.
"It is for eating" Humeira reprimanded her sister while feeding her cake and kissing her forehead.
"It's YUMM" Zoya made delightful noises as she rummaged through the package Mark had given to Humeira. "Please don't tell me it is another frame of our pictures?" She grumbled shaking the box. "I am tired of looking at two of me"
"Zoya, be grateful! He is the only person in LA who hears your tantrums and still bears two people looking like you and still loves working with you." Humeira explained. "Wait, there are not two of you. I am me, I am an individual" Humeira smiled. Zoya rolled her eyes,
"Miss Simpleton, get one thing clear. You have a face that looks like mine. You cannot be a twin and be an i-n-d-i-v-i-d-u-a-l!" Zoya shook another box near her ears and smiled.
"One thing is for sure... you will always be older than me in every aspect of our lives" Humeira sniffed.
"Why is that? Simpleton, listen we have had this conversation. NOT HAPPENING!" Zoya got onto her knees trying to move away from her sister.
"Because if it wasn't for you, we wouldn't be alive right now. We would not have made it this far!" A tear rolled down her eyes. Zoya fisted her hands.
"We are here because of our spectacled uncle! Thank him!" Zoya moved her shoulder feeling Humeira's hand on her. "Anyhoo, bedtime... Let's continue another day! New York is waiting for us" Zoya jumped up onto her feet and whizzed towards her bedroom.
"22 years and look where our lives have brought us. I miss home Zoya, I miss home! A home that disowned us. The memories are fading; I am forgetting every inch of our childhood home; the white mansion, the beautiful rose garden, the veiled walls, those hidden corners, our favourite dining spot, our favourite toys, our bedroom on the top floor and the view overlooking our royal balcony. Our parents dreamed of so many things for us, never have they imagined we would become orphans, that we would not be their little princesses anymore." Humeira leaned against the sofa and closed her eyes.
"I have forgotten Humeira. I do not have a single memory of our families left... that's what frustrates me the most... I cannot remember, I cannot remember the only beautiful memory of our lives" Zoya punched the side of the door. "It is no longer our home because our parents do not reside there any longer..." And suddenly, she felt caged. She looked around her room and their apartment; she felt everything closing in on her. She flew across the passageway and out of the door in seconds, Humeira breathed out allowing her back to bury into the sofa.

"HELLOOO NEW YORK!" Zoya greeted the familiar city removing her aviators and soaking in the sun as she stepped out of the car. Mark smiled ear to ear hearing her laugh while Humeira yawned in the back of the car wanting to fall back to sleep.
"Please give me the keys Mark, and pick me up" Humeira put her arms towards Mark who shook his head; Zoya wrapped her arm over her shoulder and dragged her inside of the hotel.
"Sameer, give the girls their keys! Conference meeting in 2 hours girls!" Mark tapped his watch going all boss mode, Zoya rolled her eyes. Mark grabbed her arm and met her eyes with his stern ones.
"Yes boss!" Zoya saluted, "And erm, you want to get done for assault?" She looked at him mischievously but her eyes conveyed something else.
"You wouldn't" Sameer joked,
"TRY ME BI-" Humeira covered Zoya's mouth and looked at Mark knowingly, Mark let go of Zoya's arm and hit her head. Zoya blew her mouth rubbing her head as she walked towards the lift.
"Stay away from her! She's not a morning person" Mark warned Sameer who stared towards the girls' backs. "And I'm their boss!" He laughed walking towards the receptionist.
"Hey Sophie, nice to see you! Have the guys arrived? What's the update on Asad's arrival?" Mark inquired.
"When is Hamid coming?" Zoya sat down on the sofa. Humeira shrugged her shoulders.
"Your best buddy is coming with the rest of the lot... I think" Humeira got under the duvet.
"We're twins simpleton, my best friend is your best friend" Zoya smiled annoyingly, Humeira grumbled. She wasn't very fond of Hamid, he was a good friend to Zoya but he was also the bad friend who was her companion in all the trouble she has gotten into all these years. Humeira also feels that he may be in love with Zoya but Zoya doesn't allow anyone to touch her, so it doesn't come as a surprise when she refuses to consider any other possible type of relations. Humeira walked over towards Zoya and put her hand out towards her face, Zoya's eyes darted towards her hand. Humeira watched her flinch before placing her hand on her cheek. Her other hand wrapped over Zoya's shoulder before settling beside her and resting her head on her shoulder. Her stiff shoulders relaxed.
"Let's have some fun!" Humeira whispered. Zoya nodded.
"When will you see him?" Zoya asked.
"During the main party!" Humeira spoke nervously.
"After so long. Where is he staying?"
"Here in New York, got here last week. He had an argument with his dad and flew over. I think his big brother wants to take him back to India with him." Zoya tensed hearing India.
"Don't worry Simpleton, I got your back!" Zoya got up from Humeira's embrace and walked into the shower. Humeira smiled towards Mark who brought the suitcases up.
"Thanks Mark, really appreciate it!"
"Shush, devil will hear ya!" He winked before closing the door.

"Ayaan, listen to me. Don't be stubborn, tell me where you are?" Asad placed his laptop bag on his shoulder and pulled his suitcase towards the crowd holding his phone against his other shoulder. His eyes fell on a guy with a board with his name; he rushed over and shook his hand before giving him the suitcase. He sat inside the car and relaxed breathing out a sigh.
"You comfortable big bro? Or do you want me to hold on a bit longer?" Ayaan teased from the other side. Asad pressed his temples.
"Ayaan, please! I'm exhausted. It's becoming unbearable. Abbu wants you home. Ammi is worried." Asad closed his eyes.
"Bro, listen to me. Is she okay? Tell her I'm okay. I'm like more than okay" Ayaan laughed.
"Can't you ring her and laugh on the phone for her?" Asad asked,
"She's going to want me home, and I will probs be on the next plane back whilst on the phone to her. I can never say no to her. I have something important to complete. Let me do this big bro, please give me a few days!"
"Why don't you tell me what you want to sort out, let me help you Ayaan" Asad pleaded.
"Unfortunately, I have to use my face to do this!"
"Okay okay, I'm texting you my hotel address. I want you there in the next half an hour! See you soon!"Asad hung up before his baby brother could say anything else.
