Chapter 1: Identity
It was a cold night in the city of Mumbai. While everyone was sound asleep in their homes, a young man was roaming on the streets, alone and somber. A hood covered his head as he wore a long cloak like attire to cover himself. What was even more peculiar were the long gloves that he wore that appeared to cover his long fingers. He stopped near a brick wall in the alley and stood still, in thought.
Why am I here? he pondered to himself. Wandering like a aimless fool has left me like this. And whats worse is that I stand alone in this condition. Why...why was I the only one left with this-
Before he could finish his thought, he heard a cry for help. He began to run to where he had heard this sound. He was led to another corner of the street where a girl turned towards him was being harassed by what looked like a mere hooligan. That was when he removed his gloves to reveal what was really hidden under them...metal alloy claws that were merged with his skin coming from above his fingers on his hands. At an accelerated speed, he rushed towards the scoundrel and slashed him with his claws on his face. The hooligan fell to the ground, frozen with fear at the sudden attack. Before he could even look at the man's face, the hooligan scurried away from the scene. The girl looked at her savior, who from her perspective was a tall,dark man. She gasped at the sight of his claws. The reaction triggered the young man to turn away in fear.
"Thank you," the girl said. "I'm sorry if I upset you...I have just never seen someone with such claws."
And she makes it even worse by emphasizing on my condition. Better to leave, he said to himself.
"Must you talk about my condition in front of me," he said. "People like you don't even understand what it is like to not be like the people around you. And to feel alone in such a big world where you are judged simply by your appearance. I don't even know why I'm talking to you. It's simply...pointless."
"Sad that you feel that way. But not everyone is like that in this world. And who knows...I might be similar to you in ways you would've never thought of."the girl replied.
He looked up, turning towards the girl, whose words struck his mind with a chord of welcoming. He looked directly at her. She had a modern outlook, dressed in a long sleeved navy blue top, blue jeans, and a pair of chapal. What really struck him about her was her long raven black hair that draped over her shoulders and her well defined eyes that looked like shiny white pearls, gleaming in the moonlight.
"I've always been taught to respect those who cared about your life, For that, I am willing to extend the hands of friendship. For that you must know my name...Surbhi," the girl said. "Now...I would like to see the face of the one who saved me...if you dont mind."
No one has ever spoken like this to me before, he thought to himself. Slowly, he removed his hood off his head. He had wavy jet black hair and his face showed a sense of pride, but anguish at the same time. "Who are you?" Surbhi asked.
The man let out a deep breath and closed his eyes. He opened them. "Karanvir..."he replied.
