Chapter 11 Asad feels guilty
A couple of hours later, Asad came out for dinner. His mom called Najma and the three of them sat down to eat He noticed that the Misfit was not there. "Good, " he thought, she was staying away from him. He noticed the pizza box and felt guilty but shook it off. As soon as he was done dinner, he got a call and went to his room. It was Ron.
"Asad, your laptop is fixed. It was just a bogus virus that was making it look like your laptop was wiped out but I found this PIN no that was on a sticky note on the laptop and researched it and found it was a PIN to clear the virus but whoever wrote it, forgot to write last number, that is why it was not working." he said.
Asad thanked Ron and realized Zoya was telling the truth. She was just fooling around. He stepped out of his room and went to knock on Zoya's room. There was no answer. "This girl probably has earphones in her ear and cannot hear me." he thought. He went to the side and looked through the window and could not see anyone. His mom came by and asked him what he was doing. He asked her about Zoya and she said she had left.
"What??" shouted Asad. "where did she go?"
"she went to stay with her friend in town as it is easier for her to research for her story, but why are you asking, what's wrong?" asked Dilshad looking at him worriedly.
"It's nothing Ammi. I will be back." he replied.
Asad realized what had happened. He had asked her to get out and she left but did not tell his mom what happened, because otherwise his mom would have his skin if she knew he had asked a girl to get out. Asad decided to go look for her because according to him, she she did not have anyone here which was why she was staying with them.
"Where the heck was she?" wondered Asad. He told his mom he had to go out to a meeting and left. He drove around for an hour but no sign of her. He stopped the car near a taxi stand and asked the taxi drivers if they had seen her. One man recognized his description and told him that she had taken a taxi to go to town. He thanked the man and left. He reached town and stopped near a shopping mall.
He walked around the mall and kept asking everyone if they had seen her. One man came up and when he asked him about Zoya, the man said he had seen her behind the shopping centre near the trash bins.
Asad ran there and what he saw, shocked him to the core. Zoya was on the floor, lying on her side, her knees bent like she was protecting her stomach. She was still, not moving. There was no sign of her belongings. Asad ran to her and turned her face. He felt her pulse and it was slight but she was alive. He quickly picked her up and placed her in the back seat of his car. He took her to the hospital driving like a maniac. As soon as he arrived, the nurses asked for a stretcher and she was taken from him. As they took her, he noticed she was holding on to his hand and it was slowly being pulled away. At that moment Asad felt like his life was going away from him. When finally she was taken away, Asad felt empty, like a part of him was gone. He could not understand it at all.
Asad contemplated calling his mom, but what would he say. Oh Lord, he was going to be in a lot of trouble with his mom but having her here would be better, he will deal with her wrath. He called his mom and asked her to come to the hospital.
The doctor came out and Asad hung up. "How is she doctor?" asked Asad.
"Well, Mr Khan, she is still unconscious, but alive, which is good. Looks like she has a couple of broken ribs, a lot of bruises and scrapes and we have stitched up her forehead. She has a fractured ankle as well. We will have to plaster it. We are taking her in for testing to make sure her internal organs are ok. Pray that all goes well."
Asad went to the prayer room and decided to pray.
"Dear God, I have prayed everyday to you to make my wishes come true and that has never happened but today I am not here for myself. I am here for Zoya. I pray to you to please make her well, I promise I will never ask for anything. I dont know what I feel for her but all I know is that I cannot live without her. She is an annoying girl who talks too much, does mischief all the time, teases me and makes fun of me but in these few days I realized, my heart which has been dead for so long has been revived. I do have feelings for her but I cannot reciprocate. My past will never let us be together. It will be too dangerous for me to get close to her."
He paused for a minute to take a deep breath and continued, "I have to step away from her. I have to let her go. She deserves all the happiness in the world. I always hide my feelings through anger and lash out without thinking. I did not really mean to throw her out of the house. I just said it in anger. Please make her well. It is all my fault and if she is not well, I will never forgive myself."
When he finished and turned around, his mom and sister were standing there with angry looks. They must have heard his prayer. He went up to his mom and before he could say anything, his mom held up her hand and said, "I dont want to hear it. I cannot believe that my son can be this cruel to throw out a girl out in the night to fend for herself. Is that how I have raised you? I am ashamed of you."
"Ammi, I just..." stuttered Asad hoping that that is all his mom had heard and not the whole prayer.
"I said I dont want to hear anything." yelled Ammi.
Asad looked at Najma and she too turned and walked away.
As soon as they left, Asad breathed a sigh of relief. They had only caught on to the last part. Thank God for that. If his Ammi found out his true feelings for Zoya, she will have him married in a jiffy. He was not destined to marry, that's all he knew. Asad walked behind them to Zoya's room
They went and sat in Zoya's room awaiting her return from getting tested. Asad walked out of the room and went to the front desk to ask what was taking long. The nurse told him to be patient. Asad turned around to walk back and noticed Zoya being wheeled into her room. She was still unconscious. His Ammi and Najma were crying and Asad felt like his heart was being ripped apart. He had never felt this way before. He sent Najma and his mom out to get something to eat and sat next to Zoya. He took her hand and his tears fell onto her hand. She suddenly stirred. Asad looked up and noticed her starting to open her eyes.
"Mr. Khan," she said.
"Sshhh...you dont need to talk." replied Asad.
Zoya looked at him with tears in her eyes and said, "where am I, those men, Mr. Khan, they were hitting me, and it hurt and and ..."
She suddenly fell unconscious again.
"Zoya!" screamed Asad.
But she would not wake up. Asad felt like he was dying. He quickly felt her pulse and she was still breathing, thank God. He kept holding her hand and talking to her and apologizing and letting her know all was fine, when his mom and sister walked in. He told them that she had stirred a little but went back to sleep.
The nurse came in and asked them to leave the patient so she can rest and they should all go home and sleep. Asad asked his mom and sister to go home and he would stay. "Bhaijaan, you will stay and look after Zoya?" asked Najma. Her brother had never looked after anyone. "yes, I will stay. As it is, it is my fault she is here so it is only fair that I look after her." replied Asad. Besides his feet would not move away from Zoya's side.
Chapter 12 Asad takes care of Zoya
Asad walked up to the bed. He looked at Zoya. The bruise beneath her right eye had deepened to a blend of blue and purple. Both her eyes looked red and swollen. Her forehead had a deep cut which now harbored stitches. Her upper lip had a cut and looked like it was going to swell. Her beautiful face was marred by cuts and bruises. There was a plaster on her leg as well. She must have broken her ankle. His chest constricted painfully and his insides felt as if someone had reached inside him and turned and twisted them. She looked so vulnerable and it took all his control not to pick her up and take her into his arms. Her hair had fallen on her face and he reached up and moved it away from her face. Her face felt hot. OMG, she was running a fever. He quickly ran outside to get the nurse. He did not see anyone at the front desk. Where was everyone? He saw a nurse helping an elderly man in the washroom and asked her to come see Zoya, but she said she was busy. Everyone looked to be running all over and he asked the chaiwalla what was going on. There was a bus accident and everyone was busy attending to the victims. Asad realized he would not be able to get any help and would have to figure out something.
Asad went back to the room and thought back to what his Ammi did when he was sick. He got a bowl and filled it with lukewarm water. He found some washcloths and placed them in the bowl. He then placed them on Zoya's forehead. He removed her blanket to cool her down. He kept changing the washcloths and after about 3 hours, it seemed like the fever had gone down a bit. He could get her acetaminophen from the pharmacy and that should help too. But she was sleeping, he thought, how was he going to feed it to her. Anyway, he would just get it and then figure out later how he would feed it to her. He went to the pharmacy and luckily the one in the hospital was open 24 hrs. He got the meds and went back. He found water and kept it ready. Now, the difficult part, feeding the pill.
He lifted her head and put her in a sitting position, his arm behind her supporting her. He felt her stir a little and asked her to open her mouth. She heard him and opened it. Her upper lip had swelled some more and she could barely open her mouth. He quickly dropped the pill inside her mouth and asked her to drink some water. She took a few sips and her head rolled on to the side. He gently lay her down gently and got up but her hair was stuck to his shirt buttons. He was now so close to her, he could feel her breath on his face. She was utterly and extraordinarily the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. Although her face was marked with bruises and cuts, she still looked beautiful. He could not take his eyes away from her face. She stirred a little and he gently pulled her hair away and stepped out of the room. His thoughts were going down a wrong path and he better get back to reality. He could not have a relationship with her. He had thought about nothing else but Zoya and there was no way they could be together. Which reminded him about the attack on Zoya, whether it was random or was she targeted. He had to find out.
Every half hour he kept checking her temperature. It seemed to have gone down. Around 5 a.m. a nurse came in to check on Zoya. Asad told her what happened and she was impressed that he had handled it. She apologized because they were short staffed and with the bus accident victims, every staff was recruited in helping them.
She went out and came back with a pillow.
"Here you go Mr. Khan, why don't you put your head back on the pillow and rest." she said.
Asad took him and when she left, he looked at the pillow. There was no way he was sleeping on that. Those pillows were very unhygienic. He put it on the side and went to the washroom to relieve himself and wash his face. When he came out, he heard Zoya muttering in her sleep. He walked up to her and touched her hand. Her eyes opened slightly.
"Mr. Kh-aa-aa-n!" she stuttered. "Whe-r-e a-a-am I?" she continued.
"Sshhh, it's okay, you are okay. You are in the hospital." replied Asad.
"Those goons, wh-e-r--rrr are t-hh-ey?" she asked.
"Don't worry, Zoya, you are safe and those goons will not hurt you." said Asad. His heart felt like someone had twisted a knife in it. He could not bear to see Zoya like this.
She looked at him and said, "Th-aaa-nnk you?"
As soon as she said that, Asad felt the knife in his heard twist even more.
He turned away with tears in his eyes, and said, "Don't thank me. Go to sleep. You will be fine." he said gruffly. He knew he sounded rude but he could not let her see how it was affecting him.
A few minutes later he turned to look at her and she was sleeping. He went to sit back in the chair and his thoughts went back to his feelings. He had never felt this way before. He felt so protective over Zoya and when she was hurt, he hurt as well. When he touched her, he felt a spark ignite. He had to get away from her.
He suddenly opened his eyes when he heard voices. His Ammi and Najma were in the room talking to the doctor. Asad looked at the time. It was 7 o'clock already. He must have dozed off. He got up and walked over to the doc.
"Mr. Khan, Good, you are here too. So, basically, Zoya has no internal damage. Her organs are all intact. She just has the bruises, a couple of broken ribs and plaster on her ankle. That will come off in 6 weeks. Also I will give some iron tablets for her. Her blood test showed low iron. We will keep her another day and will discharge her tomorrow." explained the doctor.
"Thank you Doctor," said Asad.
"you are welcome, please take care and I will see you tomorrow." said the doctor.
After the doctor left, Ammi asked him how Zoya was. He explained what happened during the night and Ammi said, "Wow, Asad, you did good."
Asad looked at her a little embarassed, "well, there was no one to help so I knew if anything happened to Ms. Farooki, then I would be blamed and you would never forgive me. Now if you will excuse me, I have to go home to change and go to work. I will see you ladies later."
He quickly walked out the door before his Ammi and Najma said anything. Once outside the room, he stopped to catch his breath and went back to the door. He opened it slightly just to peep in and see Zoya before he left. She had woken up and Ammi was fussing all over her. Asad knew she was in capable hands. He closed the door slowly and left.
