Sujata,

Weare all non- muslims here pointing fingers at a muslim woman's choice of words...

Frankly, for all you know, in their religion and locality, hindustani refers to hindu...just like in Mughal times- hindustani meant Rajput...I thinmk..

And when you say Rajasthani- the pic I have in my mind is of a hindu Rajasthani and not Muslim...I hope you understand what I mean...HIndustani- it is so archaic and insecular sounding even for an educated woman like me...

I will not crucify the PH for the choice of that word...I suspect that is exactly how the particular community refers to hindus...if Nikhat was explaining to her friend, she'd have said hindu, since it was an illiterate aunt, she spoke in her language.😊

no way people from north india speak hindustani...I have never heard of this language.. i am very much north indian...we never call ourselves aa hindutani just because we live in north india ..we call ourselves hindustani because we are indians...

The Republic of India has three principal short names, in both official and popular English usage, each of which is historically significant. All three originally designated a single entity comprising all the modern nations of theIndian subcontinent. These names are India, Bharat and Hindustan. The first Article of the Constitution of India states that "India, that is Bharat, shall be a union of states." Thus, India and Bharat are equally official short names for the Republic of India, while "Hindustan" is still widely used as an alternative name when Indians speak amongst themselves. "Hindustan" is also used in historical contexts (especially British India). Indians commonly refer to their country asBharat, Hindustan or India depending on the context and language of conversation. India is also known as Aryavarta (Sanskrit: ?????????, "abode of the Aryans").

Agree with you...but i would still say that Bharat is the more appropriate name...because Hindustan was not coined by our ancestors...it was coined by foreign forces to denote the inhabitants of the land across Indus...Hindustan is for sure used to refer to India popularly...But Hindustani is used to refer to a lot of things: including an Indian, a resident of Hindavi or north India or a language...

i understand your point of view..
but its not only muslims who are pointing at fingers on this usage of word...i am also doing the same because to me it is not acceptable..even my husband found it very offensive when he heard it...world originated from sindhu word because aryans came first there...and over time it changed its meaning and became most general world to represent india...
north indian dont mean hindu only neither Hindustan does...we should not only go for origin rather we should see what does it mean in modern times...and since medieval times Hindustan has been referring india in general...

So, do you call yourselves hindustani?

Even the muslims and christians in your place?

For me, even when I know the origin of the word and the difference in hindustani and hindu...I would never asociat a mulim with a hindustani.

For eg, if I were to visit N.India and was shown a muslim bride referred to as a hindustani bride, I would wonder why they had to call her a hindustani bride...

well if u haven't heard that there is a dialect called Hindustani which is a purer form of Hindi...i can tell u it exists...and until half an hour back even i did not know that Hindustanis (apart from Indians is also used to denote the people residing in the Hindavi Belt)...its a lesser known fact...but that does not mean its wrong...rather than jumping the gun.. i prefer facts..secondly, whichever patriotic song uses Hindustan good for them...i prefer to call my country by a name given by my ancestors than one given by foreign forces...

When did i say north indians speak only hindi...hindi, hindustani are just a couple of languages in the rich culture there...just because i do not know about something..it does not falsify its existence...

i agree that it should be called bharat..but usingHindustani word was inappropriate...and even if we take your POV,one can not represent north indian women in the same look what rajini was carrying...we have different part of north india and everyone has their own style of clothing...

Yes. In those medieval times, Hindustan had only hindus...

I still feel it is a common misconception and popularly used word in that particular community. We are not used to it, they are...

Whatt?? Yes all Muslims, Hindu, Christians, Budhhas living in India are Hindustani aka Indians.. Hindustani means Indian,..It does not mean any religion.. India is secular country..And its offensive to call Hindu bride as Hindustani..Yes Muslim bride living in India is Hindustani too..

your reply is your answer sujata...Rajini is not the stereotype north indian..she adorns one of the looks...now nikhat cannot go dissecting that which look she represents right...she is playing a hindustani bahu..that much justification suffices..which part of Hindustan (here i use it as the Hindavi Belt area) she belongs to is immaterial...she is dressed like one of the looks that is popular in north india...
