Chapter 8- Part 1

Asad

"Asad." Ammi said as he drank his morning coffee at the dining table. Najma had already left for college for a big exam and Zoya was apparently still asleep.

"Yes Ammi." He answered his thoughts still on the sleeping girl a few feet away.

"We were invited to a wedding. In the city. An old friend of the family's daughter is getting married and he expressed his deepest wishes that we would all attend."

Another wedding? Asad thought to himself. The last one was a disaster. He wasn't sure if he wanted to go to anymore weddings anytime soon.

"Asad? Where did you go? I was talking to you." Dilshad said looking confused.

"Sorry Ammi. Just thinking." He replied.

"We're going to leave by 2 so can you be ready for that time?"

He nodded thinking how he could go to another wedding after what had happened so recently.

"Oh and he's strict Hindu, I'll have to convince Zoya to wear something traditional this time." Dilshad mused. " You know I have never minded Zoya's choices but I don't want to offend them in any way so maybe just this one time. I'll go talk to her." Dilshad said leaving the table.

Asad scoffed to himself wishing his mother good luck with that because he knew very well that Zoya wouldn't wear anything traditional. She was too modernized. Ms. New York.

Asad fastened his watch on his wrist and went to fetch Zoya per his mother's wish. He knocked once and waited. But what he saw, well he couldn't believe his eyes.

Zoya opened the door barely sparing him a glance while she picked up her bag. "Just one minute Mr. Khan. I'm ready.

Asad couldn't reply even if he wanted to. Zoya was wearing a red sari. The top a long sleeved and embellished with sequins that covered her till her hips where her sari wrapped around. She wore gold sandals with a small heel and her long black hair billowed around her face with every movement.

"Zoya . . ." Asad didn't know where he found his voice. "I-uh . . . I mean . . . ahem . . . are you ready?"

"Yes Mr. Khan." she replied swiftly. "First tell me something . . . It's the first time I'm attending a Hindu ceremony. I uh . . . I wasn't sure what to wear when Phoppie told me. I just bought it." She sighed. "What I'm trying to say . . . well ask, how do I look?"

Asad swallowed hard. Beautiful. Breathtaking. Gorgeous.

He swallowed again and tried to say something that wouldn't sound foolish.

Asad Ahmed Khan fumbling over a girl and Ms. Farooqui of all.

"Well Mr. Khan?" Zoya asked again.
