Chapter 12-Part 1
Asad
Asad lay in his bed unable to fall into a comfortable sleep. Zoya Farooqui was leaving his house in one day and it was all his fault. Why'd he say those things? What on earth possessed him to be so hurtful and cruel?
Did he want her to leave? When he thought of not seeing her face every day and not hearing her say her silly couplets he felt emptiness. He'd never acknowledged it before but she really brightened up his home. With all her bubbliness and her constant smiles even when he put her down she always bounced right back up. And his Ammi? She loved Ms. Farooqui and so did Najma. And because of him, she was leaving.
"Idiot!" He cursed himself in the dark.
~*~*~
Asad ran through the wide open space frantically searching, his face covered with a fine sheen of sweat, his eyes bloodshot and his heart racing. She had to still be here, he chanted in his head. It was his mantra because if he let himself believe she had left already, he wouldn't be able to control himself.
Then he saw her, she was sitting in the waiting area. Her head buried in her iPad and her beautiful face solemn. He could tell she'd been crying because her tears left track on her face that she hadn't wiped away.
Just then her flight called and with a deep sigh he watched as she stood up and towed her suitcase behind her.
"ZOYAAA." He shouted and she turned around, eyes wide and relieved?
"Zoya, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it." Asad said as Zoya stared at him in utter disbelief.
He ran up to her and took her in his arms, "Don't leave me Zoya. Please." He pleaded.
Asad held her tightly to his chest and wished he never had to let her go.
"Please Zoya, I'm so sorry!" he pleaded, taking her face between his hands, fresh tears coursing down her cheeks. When her tears touched his palms he felt like they burnt him because he caused the sadness in her eyes.
"Come home Zoya." He wiped her tears away with his thumbs. She smiled a slow, heartbreaking smile and nodded. The relief he felt at that simple gesture was overwhelming. Her felt the pressure around his heart dissipate.
He pressed his forehead to hers and closed his eyes. Just holding her because he knew he couldn't stand to lose her. He opened his eyes and she disappeared from between his palms.
~*~*~
"Zoya!" Asad bolted upright in bed and breathed heavily. Oh God, it was just a dream. Just a bad dream. He flung away the covers and left his room, his breathing still heavy and walked the short distance to her room.
He cracked her bedroom door open and looked at her sleeping peacefully in her bed. His relief was palpable. He needed to see for himself, to see her really there in her room, still in his house to believe that it really was dream.
Asad couldn't put into words what this girl was making him feel because he himself didn't understand it. This was all new to him. Caring for someone other than his mother and sister in such a new and alien way. He wasn't sure why he felt so strongly about keeping her here but he knew that's what he was going to do. Keep her here. Because whether he knew what he was feeling or not, he did feel. For her. Whatever it was made him unable to let her go and he wasn't going to.
