Who was he? Was he a mutant? A strategist? Or a human? Even Pia doesn have answers to this since she parted with her memories to overcome the pain But still the last memory of his though doesn't say much about their relationship yet is significant as Pia feels the pain n loss and from that she knows that the soulmate she was speaking about had been him. Abhiya r already on the verge of getting into a passionate relationship n I wonder where this journey together would lead them to. By restoring her memories as Pia rightly said she will get the much needed freedom she seeks so desperately but I wonder if that happens will she still hold onto her original goal of avenging Kabir's death? Kabir doesn really seem to be all that noble at the moment 😕 Given the fact that he came up with the device that could control the mutants like animals. I wonder y u like my lame action sequences when u urself do much better? 😆 Liked the fight between Abhay n Poluxes and how Pia tried to guard him though that wasn't needed since Abhay was doing fine by himself. I donno how u came up with all these terminolgies but u have come up with a world of ur own ⭐️ Kudos to u for that 👏 👏 👏 I loved Pia's curiosity on wanting to know more abt Abhay's human world n his answers 🤣 n her excitement 😆 She really thinks ppl goto college bcoz they are inclined towards being scholars? 🤣 Dear Lord 🤣 These days students do anything but study in college 😛

I have probably said this many times before n I will say it yet again - ur way ahead than many of them ur age when it comes to writing n infact u could easily give some of us oldies a run for our money 😆 The plots r absolutely superb 👏 My pea brained head can never ever dream of coming up with such a concept 😆 U r really too good n the only reason I get critical for ur updates coz I know they have much more potential than many other stories I have read n I mean it
Brilliant update Shreya n keep it up 👏

And I forbid it. I forbid you ever, ever bashing yourself in my FF thread. ever😛

Thank you very very very much for the update Shreya.

Imagine you actually updated when you are down with Dengue and with you net not working.
I am so thankful to you for updating in such a state you are in and I know I am being very mean expecting this update at this situation.
(I am even meaner when I wish this makeshift arrangement of yours becomes permanent as I am looking forward for the next update of this as well as Time and Again. But ofcourse not immediately but in your normal frequency)

Coming to the update, I really enjoyed this one (I am now envious of Disha for getting such a wonderful birthday gift. Just kidding Dishu !!!!)
You never cease to surprise me when you bring out the characters with just their conversations.
Abhay tells Piya that he despised Kabir because he created mutants and invented Diablo. But you can see his feeling for Kabir is more of jealousy than simple hatred.
And Piya, I think whatever between them, Kabir was kind to her and may be the only vampire of that age who showered some nice feelings towards her and she liked him. It seems like more of a platonic feeling towards him. But when it comes to Abhay, her heart, body earns for something more and her mind is furious at the knowledge of this. She thought she loved Kabir, But her body and soul seem to tell her otherwise - I mean not that she hated Kabir, but she felt something more about Abhay.

yes. correct.😃

Kabir and Piya were to be bonded. Now tell me, can vampires reproduce. I think they can and thats how Piya is born. Regarding my other question of if Mutants and Vampires can reproduce, then I know you already answered to a similar question that Abhiya have to experiment 😉

Abhiya seem to enjoy each other company and I am very much liking this small of adventure of theirs not knowing what will happen in future. Her eagerness in knowing about humans is known but her being interested in knowing about Abhay's human life and he in turn being amused at her questions is really entertaining.

Now who is this Vikrant. Piya does not seem to remember anything about him except the agony she faced at his death.
Was he a human, a mutant or a vampire?

And I am confused about this memory thing. I understand that the access to Omnius is impossible and she has her blood as a password. But what is that about her having to have memory to gain access. Is she planning to visit this place to take some memories which have been buried - like a pensieve?
Can you please throw some more light on what exactly she wants at the Omnius and what this memory is about. Abhay seems to understand. But I am not able to. So requesting some more information.

More info in the coming updates. yes, something like a pensieve, but different. kind of like a bank for memories.

I am really dreading what might come up in future. Piya wants to learn to fight - to avenge the death of Vikrant. What if it was Abhay who killed him? It could be in a battle. But how would she react if it was Abhay? Or could it have been Kabir who killed him?

The concept of Poluxes is very interesting. But are these general guardians of the Omnius or were they sent to hunt down Abhay and Piya. Eliminating Abhay makes sense, but why would they want Piya dead? She is their princess after all. I dont think the poluxes are programmed to attack only Abhay. They attacked both of them.
So Abhay's heart beats unlike vampires?

Ah, so you notice that. Don't worry, everything will be explained in the end. Yes, Abhay's heart beats and so does Piya's.

In the initial updates, Like I told you before, I felt them more as Abhayendra and Maithili. But now I started to feel them more like Abhay and Piya.

You also mentioned that Piya was hated by her own people. Is it just because they thought her as a weakling or do we have something which happened in the past?

Yes, I will be clarifying that in a while.

Thank you once again for the wonderful update especially in the situation you are in.

Abhay n pia's feeling for eachother was wonderful like always.😉👏 You have potrayed their intimacy without destroying the essence. That makes it more credible. Keep it up. 👍🏼

Chapter 7: So Cold

It was twilight, the moon already up, when Abhay and Piya left their sanctuary. The town of St. Halic was picturesque. Most people lived in two storey houses with sloping rooftops. People were stepping out now, for their nightly work, merchants carrying glittering wares, small children going off to training centres. Piya stayed close to Abhay, head bowed, dressed in her simple pants and blouse. She thought they were much more comfortable than her usual dresses. "Blend in," said Abhay quietly, steering her in the direction of the shadows. "How far is the Omnius?" she muttered, letting him lead. "About an hour, if we go my way,"said Abhay, leading her down a darkened alley. "But let me tell you, Princess, that getting out of the Omnius is nigh impossible. Not only is it guarded, but also watched...we need all the luck we can get." "Yes, I understand," said Piya, subdued. Abhay and she had chalked out a plan, but much depended on chance and luck. "Where will you go?" said Abhay. "Once you...get back your memories, I mean. I know you don't want to go back to the palace-"

Piya shrugged. "I'm going to Nina. A witch," she clarified. "She helped me learn- you know, the art of healing. Then I have to train afresh, then go to Ricardia and find out who killed Kabir. And once I kill them, I want to know about this uprising that's supposed to be brewing in Faye.I have to quell it-"

"I'm coming with you," said Abhay casually."But of course, you already know that. Right?" Piya shook her head in frustration. "You'll never leave me, will you?" "Never, " he replied, in the same tone, but the word hit her hard. She had never thought Kabir would leave her...

Abhay's hand suddenly gripped hers, hard. Following his gaze, she saw a mutant stare back at them, his mouth open in shock. "Try selling us out, Mark, and I'll kill you," growled Abhay, his voice soft and menacing. "N- no," the mutant stammered. "I- 10121- what I mean to say is-" "His name is Abhay," said Piya suddenly. She didn't know why, but something irritated her about his number. The mutant called Mark gaped at her for a second, before composing his features back to normal. Like other mutants, he was exceptionally handsome, with light brown hair and dark eyes that framed his oval face. "We- all of us- are happy that you are well, Sir," he said, his tone almost clipped. He glanced at Piya and away again. "They think you are dead. That's why they've kept the Diablo off on you. Wherever you're going..." his eyes darted to Piya again, "just be careful. Aiza was very upset when we found out that you were dead-"

Abhay said nothing. He didn't even crack a smile. "We'll need insiders in the Omnius," he said shortly. Comprehension flickered instantly in Mark's youthful face.He made a slight nod and disappeared into the shadows.

"He didn't turn us in." Piya let out a relieved breath. "I thought for a moment there- thank the heavens." Abhay let go of her hand. His face was as still and cold as marble. "We have to go soon."

He set off again, his pace more hurried than before. Piya followed, silently wondering what had come over Abhay. Did all mutants treat each other like strangers? Mark had seemed so alive, too- so was the entire vampire population wrong about mutants? And the way Mark had stared when she had addressed Abhay by his name- as though he could not believe his ears, as though she had done something extraordinary. And he had seemed so nice, too. Why had Abhay addressed him so curtly? Vampires were rarely so short with one another.

"We've reached." Abhay's curt voice broke into her thoughts. They were standing in a wood, on the bank of a lake. In front of her, the large marble domed building. It glittered with the many lights illuminating it, and Piya remembered all too well, a rainy night decades ago, when she had walked out alone from Omnius, numb and relieved, while a few guards told her she had just safeguarded her memories, and should she ever want them back, she could come and get it, by using her blood to unlock her vault.

"But why did I put them back?" she had wondered aloud. "What...happened?" Falak, the then Keeper, had held her hand, and said kindly,"Princess, you have seen horrors that cannot be described, and this was the reason you chose to give us your memories for safekeeping." Falak had taken a sheet of paper with her own neat writing on it."You wrote this before you gave away your memories," said Falak. She had scanned it. "My name is Piyashree Myashrowe Gradiola, Princess of Faye. I was once commander of the armed forces of Faye.I have sworn to lay down my weapons forever." "Guards will escort you to the castle, Princess," Falak had said. "Good day and good luck, Princess."

As Piya stared mesmerized at the building now, it was her memory of leaving it that pushed itself to the forefront, making all her misgivings seem more real than ever. She was going to use her weaponry again. She was going back to it all...

Queen Alizia looked sharply at a cowering Erica. "It is him? You are sure?" "Indeed, ma'am,I assure you he is," said Erica. "He wishes to speak with you." The queen nodded. "I see. Invite him in." The vampire who then entered the private quarters of the Queen was not classically handsome. Yet his eyes were as magnetic as they were fathomless, and when he walked towards the Queen and knelt on one knee before her, she did not see much deference. "Siddharth...is it not?" Sidddharth got up and bowed slightly. "Indeed , your Highness. I was told you have need of me." "Faye has need of you," said the Queen, her lily-white palms shaking slightly. "And I, I need...I will need a spy." Siddharth tilted his head. "What sort of a spy, exactly?" "A Strategist." Said the Queen promptly. "I will appoint you as a Strategist. Your job will be to report to me any suspicious occurrences in the Omnius, and especially among the Mutants. It seems we have neglected them for too long..." She sighed , looking older. "You are accepting it, I presume?" "Yes," said Siddharth quietly. "I accept." "Very well," said the Queen. "I have received some reports, and I would like you to go through them." She held out a sheaf of sheets to him.

"Piya! Piya, are you all right?" Abhay was shaking her."What-oh." Piya realized that was she was resting her head on something soft; she must have fainted. "Are-are you all right?" he asked, looking pale. When she tried to raise herself, her hands touched clothed flesh, and with a rush of mortification, she realized she was on his lap. "Princess, allow me,"he said, with an abrupt return to his formal manner. She almost wanted to order him to call her by her name again, but desisted. He helped her back on her feet. Allowing herself a brief glance at him, she realized he had shortened her first name, which was what her mother and Kabir had called her. She had never liked Piyashree... "Thank you," she said formally. "How long was I unconscious?" "Not long," he said shortly. "A few minutes at most. Do you want to postpone this? We can always do it tomorrow-" Piya wondered if she had imagined the concern in his voice when she had just awoken. It certainly wasn't there now. "Princess?" he repeated. "If you wish to rest tonight, we can do this tomorrow." Piya shook her head. "No. I do not wish to waste time. Let's do it now." He was silent for a moment, his gaze straight ahead. Then, tonelessly, he said, "Then, we move onward. Please be prepared for bloodshed, and I will request you to be silent." Piya stared at him. What did he mean, be silent? She knew very well to be quiet. Swallowing her pride, she nodded. Taking one of the barges from the bank of the lake, Abhay helped her in, then rowed them both across, and Piya stared at the Omnius growing ever closer, she wondered what would happen once she got her memories back, but a small of her was happy- happy that she would now have her own memories to rely on, and not hearsay. It wasn't long before they reached the other side of the bank, and Abhay stretched out a hand to help her out. Piya's heart beat frantically as they walked silently on the dewy grass, closer to the bug golden gates, flanked by two vampire guards.

And then Abhay pulled out a round, reddish ball and threw it in the direction of the gates. A loud squealing sound echoed in the night air and copious fumes began to rise near the gates, moving inwards.Abhay caught her arm and the two of them ran for it, Piya keeping her eyes closed as Abhay had told her to. Fumes of silver mixed with cinnamon could render vampires forever blind. She could hear confused cries and shouts as they moved closer. Piya heard a snick sound, and then a thud. Then she heard the gates creak open and Abhay steered her on and on, until he stopped. Just then, the siren started blaring. "You can open your eyes," he said tersely. Piya opened her eyes. They were standing in a garden, which she recognized as the Central Square. It was, as she remembered, around patch of lawn, surrounded by bushes, with four roads leading to different directions. "Abhay, I wanted to ask-" "Shh!" he hissed, as he dragged her near the bushes, his dagger clenched in his hand. Piya's eyes went to the blood coating it. "Abhay-" she began, then broke off on her own. Stragegists were coming out in all directions, running down the path. She forgot to breathe as she heard them scream out in pain as they reached the gates. Unmindful of anything else, she began to get up, but she felt a vicelike grip on her arm. "No," said Abhay. He looked tensed and worried. "Please," he said. "You can't do anything, Princess. We have to stay here." Piya blinked. "They're going blind, Abhay. You- can't you stop this?" she whispered frantically. Abhay shook his head. "Do you expect me to control smoke?" he asked. "And speaking of smoke...we should go. Not that it'll hurt you much, since it will have dissipated by the time it reaches here, but still...I'm not running any risk. And we're running short of time. Straight ahead we go, right?" "Yes," said Piya. "Abhay- did you kill someone? There's blood on your-" Abhay exhaled softly. "Yes." He said. "I did what I needed to do so we could get in. that's all that matters, right?" Piya shook her head, feeling sick.she was wondering about the mad decision she had taken. Was she doing the right thing? "Move!" hissed Abhay, grabbing her hand and dragging her ahead, till she reached another set of gates flanked by a mechanical mouthpiece. "Name and password, please," said a cool female voice. "Piyashree M Gradiola," said Piya. She then pressed her thumb to a steel spike which emerged, letting her blood coat the tip of the spike. The spike withdrew and the gates clanged open. Abhay followed as Piya led the way now, through a long dimly lit corridor. He hoped, and then hated himself for hoping, that Mark had not turned them in.

Siddharth bit on a skewered lamb leg as he went through the files and records of various Mutants. It had been just a month since he'd crossed back to Faye, and it seemed as boring as ever. No, not as boring, he amended. A runaway Princess and her traitor "accomplice" had definitely made things a bit livelier. He thumbed through the screen, scrolling to the earliest Mutants brought . Because no matter what the other Strategists said, mutant 10121 could not have died so easily. He stopped at a number flashing on the screen. His jaw dropped in shock at the picture. "Abhay?" he whispered. He felt numb. His brain froze, unable to process the meaning of it all. He looked at the profile. "Height : 6 feet , 2 inches. Eye colour : blue. Orientation : Right-handed. Special traits : Good at hand to hand combat. High resistance to pain. Weak in archery, but excels at knife throwing. Aggressive." He read them over and over again. He had never thought friendly, popular Abhay would be described as such. He had assumed him long dead...

But Siddharth didn't get much time to wonder. A cool voice reverberated around the walls of the entire Omnius, including the room in which he was sitting. "Attention. Please not that today, at precisely twelve on the Omnius clock, a guard was found murdered near the gates. Also, a Sensory explosion took place near it, rendering several strategists blind. We believe a Mutant has entered these walls, and we strongly ask the Watchers to keep track . Those in the Control Rooms are requested to use containing methods on all Mutants whose locations are unaccounted for." A Mutant, inside the Omnius? Siddharth switched off the screen. He had a strong feeling he knew who this Mutant was. Siddharth moved quickly. Swiftly, he tore a wire, then punched in his privacy code as he exited the room noiselessly, shutting the door behind him. He rushed to the Sight Area. "Watchers," he announced , walking in. "I need you to patrol the area near the gates. If any more intruders enter, I do not want us to be caught by surprise- I will take over Watching for the time being." Then as the Watchers left, Siddharth closed the door. He moved quickly, logging onto one of the many screens to an all round view of the Omnius.

Control Room :

"What the hell?" hissed a woman. "Lox!The Diablos have been switched off from the mains!" "Janet, don't panic," snapped Lox. "I'm notifying the Mutant Leader. Now, we can control her through mind links...we should have done this long ago. If only Hasding hadn't died so soon...irresponsible idiot," he muttered. "We need to talk to the head," said Dahlia. She looked calm. "He must have a reason for switching it off. We'll just ask him to switch it back on-" The two Strategists hurried over to the Head's room. They were disappointed, however. The room lay in darkness, the door locked. Dahlia and Janet looked at one another in mounting horror. "We have to find out where he is," said Dahlia.

Siddharth watched the vampires and Mutants crowding the entrances now, moving inside. He couldn't find Abhay on any of the floors...just then , he saw two blinking dots at the plan of the ground floor, right at the centre. His brow creased. He enlarged the diagram on the screen and logged inside the Central Square. And then he saw them, two figures. He had no doubt as to who they were. It all fitted in. he pressed a few buttons, so that their images were now clear : the Princess, unsurprisingly, dressed in men's clothing and behind her- Siddharth swallowed. It was Abhay all right. He activated the Speaker feature, as he listened in. Obviously they were in conversation.

"-can't understand why you're being so cold about this," he heard the Princess say.

"Obviously, something's bothering you, but I just don't get it- why can't you tell me?" "Princess, I suggest you concentrate on the destination," replied Abhay, his tone clipped. Siddharth couldn't believe it. It had to be something else. No way could Abhay be so emotionless...and then he remembered. Abhay was not human. He was a Mutant- a ruthless killing machine, like Mutants were supposed to be...a pang hit his chest. The Princess stopped. "Why don't you get it? I'm tired of you acting like some non living thing. I healed you thrice, or have you forgotten?" Siddharth's eyes narrowed. "I see, which is why you have been treating me like I should be treated these past few days," Abhay snapped back. A smile tugged at Siddharth's mouth. So the Mutant was not really emotionless. He watched, as Abhay and the Princess walked on through the domed corridor, and from Abhay's protective stance, it could not have been clearrer to him who he was shielding. But he could not understand why..why had the Princess come there? What memories had she kept? Siddharth knew he needed to think things out carefully. He watched as the duo stopped in front of the chamber. The princess stepped in front of the mechanized retina scanner, and both of them went in. Siddharth sighed in disappointment. There were no Spyders inside- so he couldn't see a thing now. He quickly changed to a view of the main building, just as a few Watchers returned, and deleted the footage of Abhay and Princess. "See you," he said tartly to the Watchers, walking out. He had to go to the Queen...had to ask her a few things.

Piya did not have the courage to look into Abhay's eyes. She had hardly ever felt so much shame. Just because she herself was a bundle of nerves, she had hurt him by sidelining him. There had been so much bitterness in his voice when he had spoken to her. He must have felt terribly betrayed, yet she didn't even have the guts to apologise, and neither did he ask her to. They were silent as they walked into the chamber, the metallic doors clanging shut behind them. "They will not shut us here, will they?" said Abhay quietly, but she saw the agitation in his bearings. He was not sure of this place, and the very fact was worrying for him. She pushed away a stray curl from her head, then she pressed a finger on a needle. A drop of blood spilled out onto it. "Accessing shortly," said a cool female voice. "Please be seated, Seeker." "Seeker?" repeated Abhay. "Me," said Piya. "The person who has sought their memories." She sat down gingerly on a straight backed chair. " Do you want me to leave?" said Abhay awkwardly. "It's not safe for you," she said at once. "And I don't know where I'll find you then. They'll catch me and take me back to the palace. And I don't want to go back there. Ever."

"Transmitting images..." the voice intoned. "Initializing sounds..." Abhay glanced at Piya, who was sitting bolt upright on her chair, her lips pursed and her eyes closed tightly. And then the white light in the chamber dimmed and went off. There was a slight gasp from Piya as a thin stream of light- or perhaps it was something else- beamed onto her. Abhay felt suddenly panicked. What if something went wrong? What if she couldn't handle it? Impulsively, he reached out and took her hand.

And then, suddenly, he was standing in bright sunlight, blinking. He saw Piya laughing , in a place that resembled the castle grounds slightly. It lasted for only a second before the scene dissolved into another, another Piya, this time in a ballroom, as a handsome man came and asked her for a dance..he saw them sway on the dance floor, her yearning for him, clearly reflected in the orbs of her eyes. He was walking through her memories, Abhay realized. He saw her grim face as she dueled the man, then her triumphant laugh as she won. "See, Vikrant?" he heard her say, her voice light and teasing. "I won!" Abhay felt sick. His insides seemed to be writhing, as he saw the blatant admiration in the young vampire's eyes. And yet, he could not take his eyes off her. The scene dissolved into darkness, just as he heard Vikrant call out, "You defeated me a long time ago, Princess." The memories flew by faster and faster, some so blurred he could only make out a faces. He knew he was intruding on something private, but the temptation of wanting to know her past, combined with the desire to see her uninhibited, happy, stopped him from releasing her hand. He saw Vikrant confess his love for her, he watched as she returned it, her eyes shining in happiness. He had never seen that on her face, and his breath caught at her beauty, even as the something hard lodged in his chest refused to moved, as he saw them kiss, and then- He let go of her hand abruptly, unable to watch anymore. He could not, would not, see it happen. He stood next to her, as Piya remained in her seat, her eyes open now. She looked happy, happier than her had ever seen her, and he'd thought he'd seen her happy with Kabir...but it had been nothing like this.

Slowly, her face changed, from blissful to strained, to grim, to angry. He resisted the temptation to share her memories, fisting his palms to avoid reaching out to her. But as he watched, the beam transmitting her memories thinning, and Piya's face was now contorted into an expression of terror and fury. He started, his hand coming out to touch her shoulder. Piya's face contorted into sudden agony just as his hand touched her, and abruptly, he was jerked back into her memories. He glanced around. There was a battle going on around him. The sky was clearing, dawn breaking over the horizon. And the young vampire he had come to recognize as Vikrant lay twitching slightly in the ground below him. His handsome face was streaked by red- no, blood. A stake protruded from his chest. Abhay glanced around : where was Piya? And then he saw her. She was running towards him, her hair flying back behind her, looking very different in armour, a unicorn glinting on the front of her steel tunic. She dropped to her knees in front of Vikrant, her body shaking. "Please don't cry..." he heard Vikrant gasp. Her face was obscured to Abhay by a curtain of hair. "Smile for me, Piya...one last time?" He didn't know if she smiled, but the life went out of Vikrant's blue eyes, even though they were still open. And then he saw them : other warriors came forward pulling Piya to her feet, helping her up, while Vikrant's body was lifted onto a litter. And Abhay stared at the deadened eyes of Piya, empty, like Vikrant's had been. Horrified, he let go of her, but Piya in the chamber, too, was staring ahead, just like she had in the memory.

"Princess!" he whispered urgently. "Princess! We need to move- and fast. Please- please get up!" His words were followed by the dim light in the room going off, leaving them in total darkness. Abhay cursed. Using his other senses, he somehow coaxed Piya out of the chair. She saw shaking silently as she clung to him. "What-what's happening?: she asked, panic in her voice. "Vikrant-where is Vikrant?" "Let's get out of here, Princess," said Abhay , leading her out of the room and into the corridors. "Vikrant," she choked out. "Where is Vikrant?" "Damn in," Abhay cursed I his head. What was he supposed to say? "He's fine," said Abhay finally. "I'll take you to him. Come on." He hurried her along the corridors, keeping his eyes and ears open.

He didn't know if they were being watched now. It seemed almost too easy that they were about to walk out of the place-just like that. He rounded a corner, fully aware that their topmost priority was to get out of the place. The Omnius was a veritable maze, but Abhay remembered every turnthey had taken. Piya began to whimper for Vikrant, and he shushed her hastily. The lights were dim in the corridors, so it was only when he saw Mark's coal black eyes in the darkness that Abhay stopped dead. Mark pressed a finger to his mouth, then made the sign for an X followed by a finger along the base of his throat. He saw the real fear in Mark's eyes as he nodded and slunk away into another corridor. "You're not taking me to him," said Piya fiercely. "Take me to Vikrant!" Abhay didn't answer. He took her heand and broke into a full out sprint, because he had understood Mark as clearly as if he had spoken the words aloud. Danger. There is threat of death. They are watching. Be careful. Piya was getting impatient. The moment they were outside, she screamed. "Vikrant!" She could not complete the sentence, because Abhay covered her mouth with one hand, his other arm maintaining a firm grip on her, even as she struggled futilely against him. In desperation, she bared her fangs at him, clawing at his neck- And then, Abhay lost it.

This was her mission, her idea, her problem. He was the one who made everything possible for him- and after his use was over, she wanted to attack him? A wave of hatred swept through him, at all vampires, and at himself, for not recognizing what she was.

The next second, Piya was pinned against the wall, her wrists bound by one hand, a palm still over her mouth. "Vikrant. Is. Dead." He gritted out. "You b***** well know he's dead. You came here so you could get back memories of him alive!" he snarled softly, his own fangs bared. He let go of her abruptly. "Now that your job is finished, why don't you just finish me off and become a heroine for everyone else? It would be great to have a useful death. I don't know why I thought-" he broke off. Something had changed in Piya's face.

It had felt like a slap on the face- or rather, a sword slashed across her face- when he said those words to her. Vikrant was dead. Anguish gripped her for the man she had loved0 and with her memories, she felt as though she had lost him all over again . She drew a great, shuddering gasp, forcing herself to accept the facts Abhay had thrown at her. He had frightened her then, when he had stared at her with such intense loathing...and betrayal. Suddenly, everything began to make sense. She blushed with embarrassment and guilt as she thought of how weak she had become? What had she done?

He dropped a bag at her feet and moved away from her, his eyes still on hers. She saw the resignation on his face and wondered why...and then she heard them too. Running footsteps. The Strategists had caught up with them. Bile rose in her throat, and she had to force it down. Mechanically she picked up the bag at her foor. It was her potion supply... "Too scared to kill me yourself, sweetheart?" he said softly, mockingly. She forced herself to look away from him, towards the Strategist who was lifting a gun...pointing it at him. Time seemed to freeze. Piya found herself running forward, tackling Abhay to the ground, and the silver bullet aimed for his heart embedded itself in an acacia tree behind them. Piya had a second's deep satisfaction of seeing Abhay well and truly shocked into silence. "Get up! Dammit, we have got to run!" she hissed. She could hear Strategists calling her.

Abhay's reaction was faster than she'd thought. He hauled her up to her feet in less than a second, and then he was pulling her, both of them sprinting away from the Strategists. "Where-the-hell-are-you-going?" She panted, her breath painful. "I don't know!" he retorted, moving inside again through a set of doors that were open, and then they were hurtling across empty corridors, taking random turns that neither of them knew where it would take them. And then, suddenly, Piya stumbled and would have fallen if Abhay hadn't caught her arm, steadying her. He glanced at her, then inhaled sharply. "My god. Damn it, Princess, why didn't you tell me your ankle sprained?"It was several seconds before Piya could answer, as she gasped for breath, leaning on him for support. "Piya," she panted. Abhay looked confused. "What?" "My - name," she wheezed. "I think we've been through- enough that you can use my name." She saw surprise flash in his face, followed by something tender. "Come," he said finally. "We have to keep moving before they can find us." Seeing the strain return to her face, he added quickly, "It's all right. We don't need to run- not now, anyway. I can't smell any of them around." "Okay." Her voice was still shaky.

"Where do we go?"

Abhay narrowed his eyes at the fork in front of him, trying to decide which one of them was the best one to avoid getting caught. He felt uneasy about the lack of Strategists. Was it a trap?

"The right one," he said randomly. "We'll take the right one." She nodded , and they walked silently through the long corridors. And then he smelt them...at the end of the corridor they were in. he almost groaned out loud. Of course it was a trap...of course they were being suspected. He went very still. Piya looked at him. She opened her mouth to say something, but he shook his head a fraction to the left. Comprehension dawned in her eyes, followed by fear.

Swiftly, Abhay pulled out a small spray can and squeezed the nozzle gently. Piya watched, amazed, as grey fumes began to form from every side of the corridor. "Abhay-what shall we do?" she choked out.

"We run," he replied, his voice quiet.

He took her sweating hand and they began to run- but Piya stumbled again. Her hands clutched at the wall for support. She couldn't see anything now, and so it was a shock when she fell anyway, as the wall gave way. She heard Abhay curse, and then she felt herself lifted up in his arms, and a few moments later, she was breathing fresh air. She looked around. They were in a large glass room. "Are you all right?" said Abhay. "Yes-I-can you put me down?"

He lowered her gently to the ground. She winced slightly as the sprained ankle came into contact with the ground. "Congratulations," he said with a small smile. "Looks like you found us a way of escape."

Piya glanced at the wall behind her, which had concealed a door. "They could be coming any minute!" she said. "What are we going to do?"

Abhay looked out of the glass walls of the room they were in. He could see trees outside. His brow creased. "Let's get out of here," said Piya, tugging on his arm. "Come on, just break the glass already-"

But he was shaking his head. "I don't know, Prin- Piya...I think...I've been here before." There was a strange note in his voice.

"Come on!" said Piya, grabbing his arm and dragging him forward.

Abhay walked forward gingerly, against his better judgement. They had reached the middle of the room when the floor suddenly gave way under them. Piya's scream rang in the sudden pitch darkness that enveloped them as they fell into nothingness...

NOTE : So. This chapter was written a month ago at least. However, I was on the edge of discontiuing this FF because the response hasn't been the best. Anyway, I changed my mind because I love the characters way more than anything else and I want to tell their story. Hence, I won't be PMing anyone from now on. If anyone wants to be PM-ed, please do mention it in your comments and I will do it.
