Notes for peace | With music in her veins, Parvati Sehgal daughter of Seema Sehgal, is keen on spreading peace through music. |
MUSICAL LEANINGS: Parvati Sehgal SHE IS 13-years old, petite, bubbly and loves music, especially her mother's music. She is Parvati Sehgal, daughter of ghazal singer Seema Sehgal. She accompanied her mother and older brother Kartikeya at the concert for peace and harmony. Parvati started learning singing from her mother since she was seven. Studying at the Arya Vidya Mandir in Mumbai, Parvati is also a Bharatanatyam student. Who is her favourite musician/singer? Pat comes the reply, "my mother!" And, after a thought, "yes, I like Mohammad Rafi too." What kind of music does she prefer? "I like peaceful music, not rock and all that stuff. I watch MTV, but I do not like it so much." Parvati has been singing with her mother on stage at the peace concerts since the last three years. How does she feel? "I like my mother's tunes so much I like to sing with her." Besides, she is regular in her school music programmes. She likes to read poetry, she says, but adds, "I just do not like to read novels and stories. I like my brother's poetry - he writes so much. Yes, I like Ali Sardar Jafri's poems too." Parvati simply feels proud to be part of the concert with her mother, especially since it is about love, harmony, and peace. She says, "Hindus and Muslims are fighting all the time, there is violence. It is nice to spread messages of peace all around." How would she contribute to this effort? She says, "I can't change the whole world. But I can bring about change in the minds of my friends, relatives and in my school." Parvati says her classmates really appreciate her mother's concerts. And that she believes is the first step to understanding the idea of love and unity.
