I do agree that Sharada was made submissive due to her domineering husband. All I am saying is that the kids cannot be totally blamed if thats the environment they are brought up in. Since childhood they have bene doing this she has never stopped them from insulting so now its too late for them to change their attitude of the bat.

Lathika being a grown up adult she understands its not good to yell at her mom but habits are hard ot die. Even if its after the fact she understands it and thats why Sharada supports her.

I can't really comment on Chirag, since I don't know him much. However, in my ranking of being a good child, I would probably award first place to Karan and then Latika. Both Karan and Latika love their mother very much, but I guess Karan is trying not for his mom to get taunted by his domineering dad. That's why Karan did get married. Sure he was trying to break it and he's isn't want this marriage. However, many children blatantly refuse arranged marriages. Doesn't mean tht they r trying to hurt their parents, but they just don't want to have an arranged marriage. However, somewhere deep in his mind, I think all the taunts have made an impression in his mind tht Sharada is easy to fool or tht she isn't smart. Latika knows she shouldn't shout at her mom, but as someone said habits don't die. Tht scene between Sakshi and Latika just showed her bit of insecurity tht she has too. She also seems to think tht Shrada is not tht smart either somewhere deep in her mind. The only thing I don't like at all about Latika is tht she treats her husband like dirt, but so does her father treat her mother. This shows how much influence one's parents can have on their children.
However, I have to say tht Sharada is partly at fault for not being assertive and let ppl abuse her. She doesn't even have to reply to her husband, but atleast she could teach her children tht she is worthy

agreed that sharda could have taught her children to be more respectful. i still don't think it is easy for a woman in a marriage such as the one portrayed so far in this show to be assertive. i can imagine sharda trying very hard to correct her children, but be undermined frequently by others in the family--the important figures such as mother in law, husband...

the article is a great read and challenges us to think about the issues related to gender and respect from both the western and indian traditions. although not directly related to our discussion on how children treat their mother who is not able to read and write...i thought it is relevant as the underlying issue is one of respect.

I'm still not sure about Latika her reasoning changes per person but of course that happens. The problem is I could understand if they are embarrassed about their mother as at some point children are often due to their parents. But with them it's more than embrassment it's about about trust. Don't start me on the husband he can't even give his wife two bits of praise. After overly praising Latika for the sari work then to diminish it simply because Sharda work on made no sense really.

I'm hoping for now Sakshi is getting to know how the house works but she hasn't said much yet. Of course she did to Latika but after the event. As she fits into the house she will give get the extra confidence but also be the one standing for her.

So true about Sharda's husband. It is not difficult to imagine that such people exist in real life. Sakshi will no doubt figure out where things stand and she will be Sharda's strength. And I am watching this show to see how the story develops and sustains interest. I have to admit that I get furious when the family mistreats Sharda and especially Latika. If Latika knows that she should not be rude and shout at her mother, then why doesn't she try and change her behavior? Fundamentally, I feel that Latika, Karan, and Chirag are self-centered and lack respect for their mother. Their sense of status (derived from wealth) is clear and is associated negatively with their mother who does not read and write.

Wow just realised that my first post made no sense at all. I am sorry about that. However I completely agree. All Sharda's children are self centered and do not value their mother including Karan. I will say as someone else has said that old habits die hard. And even if you know you shouldn't do something, often that doesn't stop you. That's what Latika see to be like. She reacts before she thinks or even has all the information.

I do hope that once Sakshi finds her place in the house she may start to question then change their behaviour. But at the minute she has just married into the family and doesn't know how things work. Well these are some of my expectations let's see what happens and if they can live up to what they provide.
