I quickly made those collages. So sorry if you feel that I left out any major film that represents romance genre the best

I like a variety of both tragic and happy endings. I just hate when my jaanu has to suffer. 😒
Oh and way to give away Ram Leela. Sheesh at least you could have put SPOILER ALERT. 😡 😆

But I am sure the whole world is aware of the fact that Ramleela is based on Romeo and Juliet. 😆

Both, I know people don't usually like tragic endings but it works when it's done well and also it creates an impact.

I personally feel tragic ending in a love story shows the love stronger than a happy ending

It depends on the film. I prefer happy endings but some films would never make the same impact without the tragic ending.

Its rather ironic that most of the romantic films this year have been tragic.

I personal like the tragic ending. I remember watching Qayamat se Qayamat Tak another version of Desi Romeo & Juliet when I was little I cried my eyes out but yet it left an impact on me. Because they love each other and can't live without each other.

I didn't even cried as much watching the original Romeo & Juliet movie.

Tragic endings look good when they do not seem forced into the story. Like in HDDCS, even though you feel really sad for the lovers who get separated, you still agree with the ending and appreciate Nandini going back to her husband. It's tragic but its a gradual progression to the story and fit in just right.
There are some films on the other hand where the tragic angle is thrown in aise hi, faltu mein, just to give that unexpected wala twist to the story. Then it doesn't feel right. I'm okay with either a happy ending or tragic ending but the narrative, the story should be written + explained in a manner that makes way to the ending and the ending also justifies the events in the story, that the viewer himself feels this is the best ending and it could have been no other way. Now Dev D was based on Devdas, but Anurag Kashyap changed the ending. But it did not look weird or out of place as it went with the narrative smoothly. Ditto with Ranjhana.

Happy endings are the best, though. In rom-coms I wouldn't like sad endings at all, only happy ones.. hehe. :)
