The Doppelganger Diaries are (sadly) over on The Vampire Diaries, as two of the five lookalikes running around Mystic Falls met their end in Season 5, Episode 7 ("Death and the Maiden"). However, for the ones who still remain, their troubles are far from over.

But before we get into what made "Death and the Maiden" one of Season 5's best episodes yet, let's take a minute to appreciate actors Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley, who both worked double " even triple! " duty in this episode. By now, Nina's portrayal of Katherine has become the sole savior of TVD, but for a brief moment in Episode 7, poor, crazy Amara stole the show. Seeing her so desperate to die, begging her true love to kill her, was truly an incredible testament to Nina's acting abilities, which have grown by leaps and bounds since Season 1. Getting an audience to care about a character they've just met five minutes ago is no easy feat " but for Nina, it seemed effortless. (And let's be real: Dobrev can bring the crazy.)

As for Paul, well, we've been waiting for Paul to sink his teeth into a juicier role for a few seasons now. He was truly captivating as Ripper Stefan " unpredictable and ruthless. But as Silas, he was sly, sarcastic, and oddly charismatic at times (so... he was pretty much Damon from Season 1). Then there's Stefan, who is crumbling under the weight of three months of physical and emotional torture. Will he flip the switch? Will he become the Ripper again? Paul's performances as these two characters always kept us guessing " and were going to miss Silas and his wisecracks immensely.

Now, on to the episode. We learn pretty quickly that Silas isn't dead. It turns out that Amara didn't kill her true love after all. Instead, she made him immortal again. (Because without The Cure in his bloodstream, he's still immortal.) He's stuck, wallowing in Philadelphia. It's kind of fun to see emo Silas tell his story to two clueless strangers. Naturally, he's upset Amara tried to kill him, but instead of listening to Death Cab For Cutie and going on a long drive, he decides that he has unfinished business with Tessa back in Mystic Falls.

There's only one little problem: he also wants to kill Amara. But ending Amara's suffering would mean The Other Side would be destroyed, and Bonnie would never be able to come back. Damon tries to remind Silas of the deal they made, but Silas decides the little deal they made is off. He's not going to bring Bonnie back. He wants Damon to feel the same pain he felt. Why should Damon get his happily ever after with Elena when he can't get him eternity with Amara? Sorry bout it, Damon.

Just when things are looking pretty bleak for Bonnie, they make a startling discovery: Amara can see and touch Bonnie! But how? It looks like the anchor has the ability to be in both the living world and The Other Side at the same time " which would explain why Amara is so crazy. We'd be going crazy, too, if we could see ghosts everywhere! So Bonnie and Jeremy come up with an idea to bring Bonnie back: make her the new anchor. It just so happens that the only one who's powerful enough to do that is Tessa.

Tessa agrees once she realizes she can kill Amara after transferring the anchor onto Bonnie, which in turn, would make Silas suffer " and that's Tessa's No. 1 goal in life. (Seriously, this girl is psycho. She's had 2,000 years to get over it!) In order to complete the spell, she needs the power of all three doppelgangers, so Caroline has to drag Katherine back to Mystic Falls.

Unfortunately for Katherine, she's having the worst day ever. First, she learns that she's slowing dying. It turns out that when Katherine drank The Cure, 500 years started to catch up on her " meaning, she's aging... rapidly. Dr. Wes tells Katherine she only has months to live. (SAY IT AIN'T SO, JULIE PLEC!) Then, he daughter Nadia shows up at Whitmore, wanting more mother-daughter bonding time. And now, she's being called upon to be part of some witchy spell. But our girl Katherine knows a good opportunity when she sees one and agrees to be part of the spell only if Tessa finds a way to stop the aging. When life hands her lemons, Katherine makes lemoncello.

With all three doppelgangers in a room " kudos again to Nina " Tessa starts performing the spell, but before she can complete it, Silas intervenes... and Amara disappears.

It turns out Stefan took Amara to use her as bait to lure out Silas, who is a little too preoccupied trying to kill Tessa. (This entire episode felt very Shakespearean, no?)

Poor Stefan has been having a hard time coping with life after Tessa gave him his memories back. He can't stop remembering his death(s) at the bottom of the quarry. In fact, the only thing that's keeping him from flipping his humanity switch is the thought of killing Silas.

When Silas gets to Amara, the two lovers share a somber kiss. She tells him she loves him; he tells her he loves her. For a second, we forgot this was Silas, the Big Bad we're supposed to hate. But just before Silas is able to slit Amara's throat, Stefan comes out of nowhere and knocks him to the ground. It's doppelganger vs. doppelganger!

In the end, Stefan gives Silas a taste of his own medicine, and he daggers him in the chest. Amara, heartbroken over her fallen love, dagger herself in the stomach " and Damon is not happy about it. Inside the mansion, Tessa is rushing to finish the spell. If she can complete the spell before Amara dies, then Bonnie can become the anchor. Unfortunately, time isn't on their side and Amara's life is fading fast.

But this is The Vampire Diaries, after all, so OF COURSE Tessa is able to finish the spell in time. Cue an adorable Beremy moment! They kiss, and it's emotional and Elena and Caroline cry happy tears. Elena has her bestie back, and Caroline is happy to have a third roomie at Whitmore.

Speaking of Caroline, there needs to be WAY more interaction between her and Katherine. We think this could be the beginning of a friendship " did you see the way Caroline offered Katherine her blood to help her heal faster? She's obviously starting to care about her. Plus, Caroline can learn a lot from Katherine, like, Self Preservation 101. These two could totally be a dynamic duo " and they'd have the best hair on campus. Now that Caroline knows about Nadia, we think their storyline is far from over.

Sadly, Katherine isn't the only one coming to terms with her new fate. Bonnie and Stefan are having a hard time facing their new realities, too. For Bonnie, she's now realizing what a pain being the anchor to The Other Side can be. Not only does she exist in two worlds, but she also feels the pain of every supernatural death " which, judging by the body count in Mystic Falls alone, sounds excruciating.

As for Stefan, well, getting his revenge on Silas didn't take away the pain and psychological effects of being locked up in that safe all summer. He's still fighting the urge to flip his humanity switch. Where's Caroline when you need her?

TVD has closed the book on doppelganger drama (for now), which is probably a good thing considering there's a rather mysterious secret society at Whitmore that wants Elena to join their ranks. Oh, and does anyone remember when Matt Donovan was on this show? We need to check up on his, ASAP.

Nina Dobrev surely was the show stealer last night...she was splendid as the three dopplegangers esp. Amara n not to forget Katherine..and as for TVD definitely the best episode of this season..
Paul Wesley...deadly performance by him both as a Silas n Stefan..definitely gonna miss Silas.
Qetsiyah finally got what she wanted...an eternity with Silas...for 2000 years she has been waiting for that moment...Janina Gavankar totally rocked as Tessa..loved her the entire time.
Bonnie is alive again but had to pay a li'l price for that..feeling the pain of every dying supernatural passing on to the other side..but atleast Jeremy got to feel her after what seems like an ages to him...😊😉
