hi faiqa,
great topic. and i have wondered often why i didn't feel as bad for khushi as i ought to. was it because i was smitten with the boy? maybe that was there too.
of course, what was done to khushi was wrong... no question.
why did he not marry her in front of all. i would think because...
a) he did not want to spoil the wedding ceremony of akash and payal... and so appeared way after it with khushi... when only the fam was present.
b) he was hurt and angry and insecure and crazy beyond a point. he had no intention of making anything easy for khushi... extreme knee jerk reaction, where he tried to actually protect one imp woman and not lose the other imp woman. in the bargain, the second one got terribly badly treated. if he had been able to convey shyam's deceit to di, he may have treated khsuhi in some other way, not married her or dragged her to a temple, but whatever way, it would have been harsh on khushi... a sense of how could you! in all he did to her. a sense ofa violent outburst against someone that matters madly...
(i wrote earlier, the one you love most you tend to hurt and protect the one who is weaker... in this case it was his di... with this action, actually, he seemed to show me how badly he loved khushi rather than how much he despised her. weird.)
c) somewhere he wanted to hurt her as much as he'd been hurt. i have heard that sex without her consent was also considered by gul and co but was thankfully dumped. that would have finished the story for me. this somehow didn't... because if she indeed meant nothing, he would have dragged her to a lawyers' office and made her sign... not to a temple and given her sindoor mangalsutra. yes, he said all these things matter only to her... but why bother if you don't give a damn, mister? she wouldn't have been able to say anything anyway, once she bought into the idea that for her sis's sake she'd go through with a 6 month marriage.
this marriage is supposed to have been forced actually by star plus š and not asr at all. given that, i am glad cv's went for this beyond conventions and red passionate nuptials... tears and hurt and anger and hatred and seething love only in attendance.
about khushi... the fruits of your action, keeps coming to mind.
again and again if you refuse to do what you ought to have, maybe it all culminates in something terrible. should she have not told asr about shyam after finding out? okay, not then... when he tried to hold her dupatta on haldi day? and if i am ot mistaken a couple more times in between? even just before he got called away, when shyam insisted on talking to her? if not all those times, after the terrace, where again she too forever to reject him as a man and took time to talk about devi like anjali ji?... why did she not go running to him immediately and insist on telling him? yes yes, this is a story and that is how it played out... but then i do see a connection and do not consider khushi entirely without fault or control in this matter.
she reflects a mindset of shame and hush hush that indian women, and i suspect much of the women in our world, seem to be encouraged to nurture. that is how she reacts to the whole shyam thing... in fact, payal is the only one who seems to be ready to take on anything but not give in. of course, her character therefore was nicely finished off. serials do not wish to make us think... so we are fed the mahanta and poor girl stories. sorry, i do believe that.
the more we allow ourselves the place of the powerless, the more such things appeal... sacrifice is her strength, not wanting anything for herself is her greatness... a bit of a stretch this whole thing.
once khushi had set off on a scooter to talk to her to be jeeja ji about dowry on the day of her sister's marriage. her precipitate action did indeed lead to the break up of that wedding... arnav singh raizada, stood before payal and said it was no fault of khushi's. wasn't it? was that a thinking and sensible thing to do to rush off with the deed of the shop without telling anyone?
yet, we loved her for it. because it seemed brave, gutsy, the right thing to do and we excused the senseless aspect by calling her jhalli and crazy fondly.
ok.
but what happens when a married man is pawing you? where is your rush then? or do you value yourself so little that you are willing to let it all go for supposedly someone else's happiness? and what happiness... with a lout? a cheat? what is really the right thing to do here?
khushi did not drag anyone to a temple... but she kept quiet about a sick man and his heinous deeds. later she even brought him right back into rm, even after he'd tried to kill asr and her, again without telling a soul she did it.
at least for that action she did apologise... sort of.
and he apologised for all the things he ever did. i liked her answer... i know you did it because you love me so much.
that is it somewhere, for me, faiqa...
we hurt each other a lot in love... what asr did was not right, but maybe his feelings were right... same with khushi... her feelings for her family, him, they are right... somewhere they are what make us forgive, feel and understand both people.
i will mention again shapmochan by tagore... indra curses his court musician and dancer to mortal existence because they were so immersed in each other they forgot to give salaam to indra and he said words to this effect, "go you to earth where you will give dukkha (pain/hurt/sadness) and receive dukkha, and in this will will be your penance... the you'll find each other again and return."
having said all that, i did want to cry for khushi again and again... and also for arnav singh raizada, the man who'd looked at her with that smile and walked that walk with her... chakravyuha it was, faiqa, but they came out and survive and lived together...
to me that was the greatest triumph of this love story... it did not rely on tragedy to be memorable... it showed the courage it takes to live, even if through hell and find one's love, ket one's love lead.
writers wrote as we know without much integrity, between asr and kkg and devi maiyya they made sure we go to the place.
ufff, tum kitna bolti ho, indi. š
one more thing... i don't think he ever meant to humiliate her before others. he would protect her honour the best he can. only he was allowed to know the truth, what a bad girl she was. i love this stupid moron fool... and his jhalli is perfecto for him... but madam needs to learn to look at her own actions a bit and dump the mahanta thing... she is too cool to need it.. i loved her bankelal tactic... silly but khushi.and he might try to curb that anger... now that he has happiness i his life once more.
shut up, indi.
