Is marriage the be all and end all of a woman's life???? It's pitiable and disgusting that even in the 21st century we cling to such primitive customs and thoughts. If India is to progress these serials should depict empowered women. Prathna, her family and the others (all that constitute the society) think that the bride's life has come to an end. All the crying and cursing show that we devalue woman and everything associated with her. Since serials have large viewership it is crucial that the image of revalorised woman be portrayed.

Yes friend agree with you.

But it is not the real picture.

In India, woman is being empowered day by day.

I agree with you. In serials they need to make our women more strong and brave

I have only been watching Indian tv for about 2 years and I am shocked at the way women are portrayed on shows and how they are treated! Marriage is given WAY to much importance! It IS important, but not more than once's self respect and dignity!!

I am not Indian and I live in the west and have done so since my youth. But I am from south Asia originally. So I know that marriage is important. But in the society I grew up in women's education was considered just as important and girls did not marry in their teens or before age 21 most of the time. Most of the girls I knew married in their late twenties including my cousins and myself! We married after completing our education and getting jobs etc.

So to me this obsession with early marriage and victimising females and their families in the name of marriage is really VERY regressive!! The TV shows need to concentrate on more balanced females! Not just portray them as Abala Nari's or evil Saas or do gooding perfect Bahu's!! It is so narrow minded!!

Of course, I agree changes are happening in women's status but at snail's pace. These soap operas can well be used to educate the masses about the potential of women. But as of now I think they are sending a wrong message. I am afraid the depiction of the stale customs and rituals, regressive thoughts and ideas, domestic violence, etc., only reinforce the subordination of women.
