CHAPTER-53.

"TRULY!WHAT A ROMANTIC SCENE!"Sneered a knowing voice again,as Meera and Prithvi belatedly stood up,and moved apart from each other..

Prithvi and Meera,both turned to face a sneering Lakhan.But what stunned both,was not his presence,but the crowd of villagers standing behind him.

What are they doing here?!!Prithvi thought with shock.It seems the whole village..

An embarrassed looking Meera,tried to move further away from Prithvi,and stumbled on a tree root,and was about to fall,when Prithvi held her arms to hold her steady and prevented the fall.

"WAAH!!!"

CLAP CLAP CLAP!!!

"Villagers!Please see!This is called true romance!"Lakhan sneered again,and the villagers all seemed murmuring to themselves..Prithvi's temper started igniting,and he clenched his hands into tight fists,as soon as he let go of Meera.

"They can't even stand without touching each other!God knows where they have not touched each other.."Lakhan gave a nasty chuckle,and turned to face the shocked looking villagers."If they can do so much in front of us,just imagine how much and WHAT they do,when we are not there..They are such good lovers that-"

"SHUT UP!!!SHUT ..THE ..HELL.. UP..!!!"

Lakhan was completely shocked and scared,as Prithvi grabbed him by the collar of his dirty brown kurta,and lifted him almost a foot above the ground.His face reflecting complete livid expression of pure undiluted rage.

"How dare you say such ugly things about Meera?!!"Prithvi sid in a harsh angry voice.

Lakhan could not reply at that moment even if he wanted to.Dangling above the ground,he held onto Prithvi's hand for support,and nearly choked,as the neckline of his kurta pressed against his windpipe.The villagers also steeped back,and were completely dumb struck,at the show of such utter rage.

"HOW DARE YOU?!!I said-"

"PRITHVI!Let him go.."Said a calm but authoritative voice.

Prithvi turned to face Ramdhari Singh Thakur,who now came nearer as the crowd of villagers parted to let him pass.Lakhan still held in the air by him.

"Let him go,Prithvi.."Ramdhari said in a calm voice again.

This time Prithvi did as he was ordered,and a gasping Lakhan fell on the ground,as Prithvi angrily let go of his collar,not bothering to put him back on the ground too.

Ramdhari's eyes watched Lakhan's fall,looked at the livid looking Prithvi,and then moved to Meera..Prithvi followed Ramdhari's gaze,and turned to look at Meera too,who ,he realized was standing at a distant,her face a mask of embarrassment,pain,anger,and held back tears..But she was averting everyone's eyes.Including her father's and his.

"See bhaiya?!Hadn't I told you and warned you,they were upto something?!See?!!Now it seems like the thief will attack the police!Bhalai ka zamana hi nahi raha![The age of goodness is not there anymore]"Lakhan snapped out,massaging his throat,as he stood up.

The silent villagers again started murmuring between themselves..Everyone talking about the same thing..Everyone busy condemning Meera and Prithvi between themselves..

"Come to the Haweli..We will have the discussion there..Meera,Prithvi..Come with me..Villagers,plase go to your homes and works.."Ramdhari's calm voice rang out in the charged atmosphere..

"But why should the villagers leave?!"Interrupted Lakhan,as Ramdhari turned to depart.

The sentence made Ramdhari Singh Thakur,the ideological Head of Sarpanch and Mukhiya of Baragaon,turn to face Lakhan,a thin crack on his mask of calmness clearly visible to Prithvi.

"What do you mean?Why-"

"The villagers have complete right to know HOW FAIR YOU ALWAYS ARE!"Lakhan explained with a sweet smile."They know you won't be partial,just because you are Meera's father,and Prithvi is.."

"COME!Everyone!"Snapped out an angry Ramdhari,as he turned to leave,and everyone followed.Including Meera and Prithvi..

The Thakur Haweli was a completely different place now..Hoards of villagers,starting from young ones older ones had gathered to witness the fate of Meera,the Thakur's wild daughter..

"Yes..This is the man who came to our Dhaba yesterday,and that is his wife!And theyare the best in love coupe I've seen in a long time..I can never forget them.."Said the dhaba owner,whom Prithvi had lied to,in order to protect Meera's reputation..

He cursed himself again,as he saw the smirking face of Lakhan..The lie was to protect Meera,an unmarried girl,from the backwater of a village, accompanying him alone to the city,and stop the gossip..It had backfired big time..

"How are you so sure that they are in love?!"Lakhan asked,his eyes winningly looked at Prithvi and Meera,standing at the middle of the crowds..

"Bhaiyaji!Anyone could see their love!And this bhaiya here fed his wife so lovingly..How can they be not in love?!"The dhaba owner declared smiling.

A gasp passed through the crowd of onlookers,and everyone started murmuring again..

"What a shameless girl.."

"These Khannas were always bad,but she should have thought about her family.."

"Who will marry such a shameless girl.."

"Blackened her family name.."

"This kind of girl should commit suicide..Chee!Chee!.."

"Yes..How could she even show her face after all these.."

Prithvi's temper seethed and seethed,as he heard the villagers murmuring all these..And they were all united blaming Meera alone for everything.A feature of a male dominant society..

His eyes moved to Sudha Singh Thakur,who was clearly crying silently,and passing helpless looks at her daughter,standing at the centre of the Panchayat..She had tried to protect and fight for her daughter earlier,but had been stopped by a fuming Ramdhari..Who declared laws were the same for everyone,and the Panchayat will decide her fate..

Prithvi's eyes moved to Meera,who stood with her head held high..But her drooping shoulder,and ready to fall tears,did not go unnoticed by Prithvi..Nor her shattered breath,as the villagers murmured blames on her..

"Really Meera has blackened our family name..Now who will marry her?!I am so ashamed of her.."Lakhan said with a mock sad look..

"Who will marry her?!"

"This is such a shame for this village,that the Sarpaanch's daughter blackened the village's name.."

"No one will marry her,and for her our daughters' names will be tarnished too.."

"No one will marry.."

Prithvi was losing his control on himself,as he noticed how each and every sentence pierced Meera..His heart squeezed painfully,as he noticed she was struggling to stay strong..Not to cry..But the lovely strong willed girl was about to crumble down,any time soon..

" I WILL MARRY HER!!!"Prithvi's firm voice fell like a bomb on the gathering,and everyone was silenced at once..

I am happy to see that Prithvi is ready to loose his propery for Meera's eyes. How romantic!

But I think he'll find a way to break that curse. Hope he does. 😔
