Contrary to popular belief, my observation about BiggBoss is that being a bitch on the show is extremely harmful in the long run. In fact so is winning the show. For people who hope to make a career or revive a flagging career - the best option would be to play a safe game and be evicted midway.

Here's an update on what's happening currently with previous show winners and controversy stars:

Season 1

Winner: Rahul Roy
Controversial: Kashmira Shah
Item Girl:
Rakhi Sawant.

Fate: Both Kashmira and Rahul Roy have never been heard of after the show. Rakhi has been trying ever since to stay in public eye through various means including a Swayamvar but she has never been offered a film after that

Success Stories: Rupali Ganguli, Ravi Kishan, Amit Sadh

Season 2
Winner: Ashutosh Kaushik
Controversial: Raja Choudhary
Item Girl: Sambhavna Seth

Fate: Last heard Ashutosh was thrown out of a pub for drunken brawling and another time when he tried to gatecrash a wedding. Raja is a regular in Mumbai Policestations. Sambhavna has never been seen in any Hindi film after her BB stint.

Success Stories: Monica Bedi

Season 3
Winner: Vindoo Dara Singh
Controversial: Sherlyn Chopra
Item Girl:
Sherlyn Chopra

Fate: Sherlyn has not been offered any hindi film, she tried to revive her career in hollywood but failed there too, as a last resort she attempted the nude centre-spread but event hat failed to get her any roles. While Vindoo did appear in a couple of films that had more to do with his pre-existing contacts than BiggBoss. Last heard he was involved in betting scam.

Success Stories: Pravesh Rana, Claudia Ciesla

Season 4
Winner: Shweta Tiwari
Controversial: Dolly Bindra
Item Girl:
Veena Malik

Fate: Well this season did a number of successes including Shweta, Sameer Soni, Veena Malik, Ashmit Patel but it also saw the demise of careers of hugely successful people like Sara Kahn and Manoj Tiwari. Both have been unable to revive their careers post BiggBoss. Same goes for DollyBindra. Where she was getting bit parts in both movies and serials prior to the show, after the show got over, she's never been seen on screen.
The Great Khali has also been missing on WWE circuit so far as I know.
Success Stories: Shweta Tiwari, Sameer Soni, Veena Malik

Season 5
Winner: Juhi parmar
Controversial: Pooja Misshra
Item Girl:
Mahek Chahal

Fate:
This season saw the mass-scale destruction of so many careers. Sky, Pooja Bedi, Shraddha Sharma, Sid, Pooja Misshra, Amar Upadhyay, Shakti Kapoor and Juhi Parmar - no one has been heard of ever since.

Success Stories: The only success story of note was Sunny Leone and she did not need BB to launch her career.

Season 6
Winner: Urvashi Dholakia
Controversial: Imam
Item Girl:
Sana Khan

Fate: Sana had to face a false case and dodge the police because of her popularity on the show. Urvashi has not been heard of ever since the show. Imam did get a show of his own on MTV, but notably talks for that show were already on when he entered the house.

Success Stories: Aashka, Sayantani, Delnaaz and Imam

My take is that being controversial or overly critical on the show has always worked against contestants.

All people who've succeeded had the reputation for getting along with everyone (that includes being labelled manipulative).

Those who seek to stay in limelight by being bizarre or controversial have always failed to get takers outside. And they forget that they have very little time to capitalize on their new-found notoriety. In less than six months BB is going to throw up another controversial star and another item girl.

For season 6 I don't agree with success. I feel the biggest success would be Karishma Kotak, because no one knew her before and now she is on the cover of every big magazine.

Also Sapna & Niketan because we would have never known who these people were if they hadn't come in the house.

Finally Santosh because he got a role with Salman in his movie.

But none of these contestants lasted till the end - they all got eliminated midway and that has proved beneficial for them. As for Santosh and Sana - Salman is known to surround himself with controversial people.

On what basis are you defining success?

I have not followed enough seasons of BB to know everyone. In fact I don't even watch the show. However, in general I think winning a reality show is typically detrimental to career. Even in talent shows the ones who were relatively popular but didn't win got the most success.

Being a bitch is never a formula for success. Even if abrasive behavior is part of a game, people stay clear of such people. If you want a career, you portray yourself as someone who is assertive, outspoken, but congenial and pleasant.

A show like BB though is trash TV and hardly a vessel for launching or reviving careers. I think people do it for money, publicity and milking niche fandom. But there is some chance of career revival if you do it right.

For me measure for success is an upswing in career of the participants. Most people come to these shows to get noticed and get work that had stopped coming their way or that they were unable to get.

In BiggBoss history the only controversial candidate to get work post the show is Imam. The only winner to get work post show is Shweta Tiwari and Vindoo. In my opinion none of these people really needed this platform for their professional careers. Vindoo was appearing in bit aprts both before and after the show and there hasn't been a significant change in the number or length of roles he's getting. Shweta was appearing as lead before the show, post the show she appeared as the mother of teenage kids.

remember niketan once made the same remarks on live feed tht BB never helps launch or relaunch careers. the only person it helped till date has been rakhi sawant. shweta tiwari was already a star and did not lack offers.

and dont count veena as success. she WAS hugely popular in pak as a tv anchor/film actress. her career was died here and in india it never took off. an item song and a string of B grade flop movies dont make up for a success story
