That is the key to keeping an audience hooked, you tell them just enough that they don't hate you. But save the right amount for next time so they keep coming back. Not very different from a drug dealer😉

Chapter 6

A/N: This is a long chapter. So, sit down and take some mental notes. Plenty of events important for future reference are mentioned. Also, take my medical knowledge with a grain of salt. Although a minor in psychology makes me the expert on all things mental health, I mean I could practically open up a clinic to treat patients if I wanted, I don't want to be held responsible for any damages.

P.S. The law stuff mentioned here is pretty darn accurate, if say so myself. I am happy with myself. That is all.

"Don't listen to them. You are mine tonight", she led him out the hallways, down the staircases, and out into the parking lot, with the strength of ten men. When their car was within reach, she used the hood to pin his weight onto it, prop her legs on top of his hips, buckling up like lock and key.

He could feel her touch snaking up and down his overworked nerves. Soon his tee was pulled over his head, flesh exposed to the cold evening breeze. But his body couldn't feel the icy air. The hairs sticking out on his back were too busy tracking her movements; fresh sweat forming everywhere she touched. Her lips found their way to his sensitive spot. If the assault on his senses went on any longer, Rishabh wasn't sure he could turn back.

"Madhubala, what are you doing?" Both their eyes shot up to make contact.

"Nothing I shouldn't be doing", she resumed nibbling on his earlobe.

RK gathered all his courage and willpower to lift this beautiful woman out of his arms. He pulled her off the car and gently placed her on the ground.

"This is everything you shouldn't be doing. I could be convicted of rape for taking advantage of you. You're not exactly yourself at this hour".

Was she ever? This was her problem: Yvette didn't know if she could ever be herself. She was either manic or psychotic or both, or nothing. Nothing, more than ever. She wanted to feel like the others, love like the others, weep like the others but, she just couldn't. Yvette or Madhubala or whoever she was now, was just a prisoner caged inside a body. Her essence, the soul, wanted to be freed but she saw no way out. Just when Madhu was beginning to feel for this man, he rejected her. Like Joel, he pushed her away. Just when she thinks she has a shot at love, the lover denies her that chance.

"Don't be silly, darling. I would never do such a thing to you. Besides, we're married and I am consenting". With some encouragement from a surprisingly foggy image of Nice Ghosty lurking around, she tried one last time.

"In the eyes of the law, marriage is not a license to consent and drugged people don't give consent. We'll catch up when you are sober".

See, I told you he likes you. Maybe he's just tired. He said he'll agree once things cooled down. Admit it, you are pretty high, even I wouldn't do you. Nice Ghosty whispered and faded back into nothingness.

"But you look so pretty", she reached up to touch Rishabh's hair, her fingers weaving through it, as if trying to remember what she'd marked years ago. "Just like my Joel. Sometimes I think life gave me Joel back. I think. No, I know. I know I love him and maybe, if you let me, I can love you too. Why won't you let me?"

She sat herself down on the somewhat wet but mostly dirty asphalt of the parking lot. With little care for manners, her legs spread into a yoga position, revealing a little too much underneath the ghagra-sari-hybrid-contraption she was wearing. As RK recognized a small herd of paparazzi appearing, he lifted her up bridal style and drove back home where, hopefully, the disasters would be less public.

One of the help staffers announced that the home phone line had been ringing off the hook. A certain Dr. Nesh was dying to get in touch with Mr. Kundra.

Rishabh dialed back to Yvette's brother. "Hello, is this Madhu's brother?"

"Yes, my name is Munroe-Levi Nesh. My sister's name is Lemuella Yvette Nesh, or as you address her, Madhubala. I am sorry we were introduced under these circumstances. May I speak with her please?"

"Back up a bit", Rishabh felt sheer frustration get the better of him. "How is that no one has mentioned you or wife before tonight? And why is Madhu's dad hell bent on making my life a nightmare? I could have admitted her to the psych ward and be done with it. I have a job you know".

As much as his words stung, Munroe-Levi didn't show the hurt. His sister's well being was more important.

"I am sorry for the trouble at this odd hour. We weren't expecting this, considering Ev has been going strong for over a decade now. Guess, the moment I stop being careful is when the slip up happens. I am on my way as we speak. I will tell you everything once I touch ground. Is that okay with you?"

Rishabh simply shook his head in confusion, the impact of his words dawning on him.

"It's became my dad hates me", said Yvette, fumbling with the throw pillows in the living room. Rishabh dismissed her crazy talk and handed her the phone hoping she didn't destroy yet another gadget in a fit of madness.

"You okay kiddo?" Munroe feigned calm over the telephone for the sake of his sister. On the other end of the line, he was sweating like a sinner in the Synagogue. Yvette displayed the telltale signs of a full-blown manic psychosis, and he was too far away to help her.

"Yes, I am okay".

"I think", she added after a pause. "He doesn't believe me when I tell him papa hates me. Papa hates me, ain't it Lev?"

Lev had tears well up in his eyes. No matter how many times he heard Yvette say this, the pain never got any less. The fact was, Dr. Haddad had abandoned his daughter for becoming someone she had no control over. The illness was an unforgivable curse that loomed over Yvette's otherwise infallible status in the house. She was the only daughter of the family but, the patriarch had no second thoughts disowning her the minute she was diagnosed. Had it not been for Lev's extensive financial and emotional backing, Yvette would never have gotten the life changing treatment she received. The medication had worked wonders and Yvette was back in the family loop, even if temporarily.

All said and done, Dr. Haddad would stop at no end to make records of her hospitalization disappear. He had used his monetary and nominal powers in Kolkata and Mumbai hospital's trusts to erase any mention of Yvette's visits. Lev had kept his baby sister sheltered through it all. He had cared for her like a parent, taking her under his wing. Perhaps, it was only due to his vigilance and sensitivity that Yvette lived a healthy life for so many years.

The doctor laid down the prognosis ten years ago, in cold blood. Whenever the body crossed the threshold for stress (chemical or emotional), Madhu would experience delusions. Since she'd only had one two week episode of hypomania, followed by mania, and unidentified psychosis, the official diagnosis was Schizoaffective disorder. But, the symptoms lay dormant for so long, no medical professional could tell with certainty what was wrong. It was a tentative name to a permanent monster, that would change as the monster pleased.

A child that Lev had treated like his first born was doomed to perpetual suffering. There was nothing more he could do than just join her in the struggle to live life. The mere assurance that her life away from Kolkata was loving, a blessing he'd wished upon her every day in that hell house, was a relief.

"I don't know about that but, I sure hate papa. You don't sound so good. Give the phone to your honey, I'll ask him to make you a nice, rich kugel. Then, we can all eat in peace, okay?"

"He is not my honey", Yvette huffed feeling flushed from obvious teasing.

"You are smiling ear to ear. I can hear you blushing all the way in Calcutta, kid".

"You cannot possibly hear my cheeks turning red", Yvette seemed appalled that her brother would accused of such a childish emotion. Lemuella Yvette Nesh was many things- composed, creative, artistic- but, around Lev she turned into an inquisitive little girl asking an elder to name all the stars in the night sky. Even during her manic ramblings, he managed to sway her attention toward a silly little thing. They'd talk about nothing, forever, and the hurt passed quickly. The voices in her head were pushed deep under the surface, they didn't seem to scare Lev, when they scared everyone else away. Lev had been her pillar through the thick of the night. He wasn't changing now, even if she was far, far away.

"Fine, ya got me. Make it quick though". She brushed the telephone on the back of Rishabh's hand.

if I answered all of them at once, you would have no reason to return to this story.😉

I wouldn't tell you if I knew.

He's hardly the victim. Note how he married a woman only to get his hands on her property. He married her for money. There's a word for that. Also note my anger for this man. I hate him like I love him.
I hope he understands madhu's condition n help her as i think he's d only one who cud do this...
Hardly, she's got an awesomesauce support system who have held her hand through the dark. She doesn't need RK but, it sure would be nice.
N one more ques- Has madhu fallen for RK??? Or she is doin all this to get away frm that so called ghost...
Let's look at the chapter again. Maybe something is hidden that wasn't clear at first glance?

"You're not exactly yourself at this hour".

Notice how Madhu thinks she doesn't "feel like other people feel. Mood stabilizers would do that to you. You can never be sure of your feelings. Maybe this helps her test out her feelings and figure out for herself whether or not she is capable of love again. Note that she did not get mood stabilizers at the hospital but only anti psychotics.

Hey pls answer n put an end to my inquisitions...

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions😊

OK i know it is totally the wronv reaction but I cant help laugh at RK's situation..
he though he was being a smartass and making a profitable deal by marrying Madhubala..turns out Madhubala's father is a bigger jerk than RK himself..a coward who gave up on her just coz she wasnt perfectly normal anymore

and before people accuse me for being insensitive, I feel for Madhubala..I really do..to live with the feeling of being trapped all these years, the Meds might make it easy to handle..create a sense of normalcy but its always there at the back of mind

looking forward to knowing more about Lev and where he was when Madhubala's dad was sponging her off
oh and Joel too..

no hun. dis a safe space. ain't nobody got time for hatin.
the voices just grow quieter. they never really go away. plus, like madhu said, you are never in charge of your emotions. you can't tell if what you are feeling is real or because you're on meds.
looking forward to knowing more about Lev and where he was when Madhubala's dad was sponging her off
oh and Joel too..
