Why do you NOT read a story? NOTE pg 63

This question has been plaguing my mind since a long time and I got time only today to ask it.

Many posts have been made discussing our favourite stories but off late I have seen around that people stop reading a particular story. I too do that for various reasons:-

a. Updating Regularity: If a story is not updated regularly, I tend to either not start it or leave it midway because I can't wait for a very long time. But if the author puts up regular notes for his/her absence, I will stick to that story because I feel the connect! And I understand everyone has a personal life and not everyone can update every other week but a constant link with the author always helps :)

b. Format: I find it a little difficult to read stories which are written in sms language. I don't mind that language and can read it very well but I find myself more engrossed in trying to decipher a short form than the story itself :(

Also, if the story is written in the dialogue form, without it being a play, I can't read it either :(

c. Hypocrisy: If I know a particular author asks for likes/comments/reviews/encourages the readers to speak up in each of his/her updates but silently reads other authors' works (by only pressing the 'Like' button) then I will not read anything by him/her.

d. Once bitten twice shy: If I know that a particular author has left one story incomplete, I will never pick up another story by that author because I know that that author only starts new stories without ever ending them!

e. Bias:
I am a human and I tend to be biased. I can't be neutral always. So I have a tendency to not read a story by an author whom I do not like. I know it is not correct on my part but I cannot help it :(

f. A non-ArHi story: Sorry, I can't bring myself to read a story which is not on ArHi

g. Blogs:
I am not comfortable commenting on blogs. So if a story is on the blog with no corresponding IF thread on it, I won't read it

h. Illogical:
I have left a lot of stories (even completed ones) if they don't follow logic anymore. I know, no story is perfect but I cannot help but get focussed on that one particular big glaring mistake in the story :(

i. Rude: I can't read a story by an author who is rude to others/readers in general. I know his/her attitude has nothing to do with the story he/she is writing. But if I find rude notes above and below the updates, then no I won't read the story!

j. Plagiarism: If a member has plagiarised once, there is a tendency that he/she will do so again! So I won't read anything by that member. I know we should believe in second chances but I can't bring myself to do that.

k. Acknowledgement from the author:
When I comment on a story, the least I expect from the author is to press the 'Like' button on my comment to let me know that the extra time I took out to comment (instead of being silent) was worth it. And if not that may be a scrap once in 5 comments! If I see my comments are not acknowledged, I will stop reading (because I would rather not read and not comment than read and not comment)

l: The Author's Bias: If I see the author having a gala party at his/her thread with his/her friends, ignoring the other readers, it is a total turn off for me. I feel bad!

m: Complicated sentence construction:
I can't read a story which uses overly non-regular words so that every time I read a story I have to sit with a dictionary! And I don't like too much of metaphors!

These are some of the reasons I have stopped reading some stories/I don't start with a story. Share your reasons too and please refrain from mentioning any authors or stories (even in the form of a hint. We all are smart enough 😉)

Edited to add the note :)

Well said Zehra👏. Agree with you almost all points.
I don't know it's my place to say something.
I had same experience which you described. The story and the author both too famous and favorite and recommended for awards too.
1. When I started reading, those stories never came to my expectations.
2. Some stories will start with such a promises unfortunately after three to four updates I don't know what happens.
3. Some stories which have around 30 to 40 updates , half of update only for sex. But this has nothing to do with story.
4. Some update like this ... Rain khushi walking deserted road... some gunda will appear. .misbehaving there comes one bright light hero comes dishum dishum then he will offer his coat. I am bored reading this. ...
5. Stories other than Arshi. ..
6. Stories in which lot of characters whom we are not known .. must strangers. A lot of strangers they have nothing to do with story.
7. When we read an update and comment wow this is it. Not every update but at least few updates.
8. You know there is one author who once resend me one link saying I didn't comment. I was shocked to core. How can she find out it. She had lot of readers ... God
9. When my writers acknowledge my presence I feel so happy.

well i just cant read stories from authors who arent updating regularly because then i forget the essence of story and it does not interest me anymore and also if the story is very descriptive i tend to loose interest.
Also i dont like reading stories with big grammatical mistakes as it takes very much time to comprehend what the writer want to convey.

I read many fanfics over here..some is stalk generously nd comment happily..whereas some i just silently read..(i knw its bad..but frm phone typing gets strenous..nd i dont like to comment like good..excellent etc)
For me .my criteria is It should be ARHI stories only...i cant bear any other shows..especially 4lions other ventures..
Secondly..i m biased ..i read stories who are who are very freindly in IF nd barun freindly too..(;P)
Grammar nd skill to plays an important part..

Just wanted to add..all are awesome writers ...keep up the spirit nd cherish u r stories..:)
I m truly blessed to read stories of Meera ; tina ; semanti ; juhi; anonymous; omorabati; caskett; everydayirabbave ; sugararhi; farha; serialjunkie; mayahill..u and rasgulla..nd many more

Good post.
For me I dislike when author asks or waits for a particular number of comments or pages or like before updating. If the readers love the story they will do it without the telling. And as the story progresses it becomes normal to comment or give opinion.
Another is grammar. Its fine if its a short story but otherwise it becomes irritating to my eyes.
P.S agree with all your point. Especially about the blog.

Yes, descriptive stories. Good point. I too need some dialogues in between for breaks! But if it is written brilliantly, I can make it an exception 😉

I agree with you on just about all, but the most important for me is the writing itself. If the English is so bad that I can't get through a sentence without having to conjure up my own, then I can't go on.

I also don't appreciate authors threatening to not update if they don't get a certain amount of comments. Honestly, the comments come if the writing is worthwhile. I find it incredibly rude to the poor readers that do comment and vested that time in reading only to be blackmailed that way. I've seen this get out of line into almost bullying. Not cool.

Format is also important. If there is no index and the title doesn't get updated, then bookmarking holds no value. The author and reader are solely dependent on the PM system. If you come to the story midway no way to know where the next update will be.

In addition, if the author starts factoring in comments and loses the essence of the storyline and does not focus on the original premise, then the story loses its value for me. I would hope the story had some thought put into it beforehand rather than just going with the flow and losing its momentum midway. Its hard for the writer and the reader.

Blogging. Readers are suddenly subjected to yet another forum to follow and continue what they were reading. Not cool. Readers vested interest, time and effort. Running around and bookmarking tens of stories is not fun and no longer worth the effort. Especially for unknown authors that may or may not finish the story. Worst yet is proving themselves worthy of being their readers. No doubt their work and their choice to share. But their is some blind faith both ways that needs to be appreciated. (not talking about mature content)

Lastly, if an author continuously delays updates or never finishes stories and starts up new FFs, then its hard to take them seriously.
