Let me tell you... No one is more shocked than me that I am so so crazy about our Desi version... I think it has all the elements that made P&P a classic and then some... But you are right the similarity ends somewhere around Diwali...love both all the same ... But am loving IPK a tad more these days coz it has context for us... More than a Brit book...no offence to any Austen fans as I am one myself...

Cannot help but jump in here...😊 Don't know if you guys were around on the forum during the early days of the show, but apparently Gul herself had mentioned in some interview that this was based on P&P. I remember resisting the notion with quite a healthy intensity, chiefly because the ASR of yore was no Mr. Darcy. All the other parallels were there as enumerated by tvbug (love your name btw😊)...and additionally, there was the Anjali-Georgiana, and Shyam-Mr.Wickham parallels. But, ASR of the first thirty or so episodes was eons removed from my Mr.Darcy...and then the guest house happened, and the process of darcification started. There was lots of discussion on the subject, circa July-Aug 2011.

As for loving desi or firangi, both are on separate, but equally immovable pedestals in my heart's hall of fame. 😊

Vistaa, lovely to meet another P&P fan. 😊 And I'm happy to be called either TVbug or Sabs, whichever appeals. I started watching IPK rather late in the day; the dressing-room epi after Teri-Meri was my first. And then I spent the weekend watching all of Ismailvegamze's love scenes and was irrevocably hooked! 😃 Joined IF even later, in June last year, so missed Gul's interview and subsequent discussion, but I did catch one or two discussions towards the close of IPK on the similarity to P&P.
Anjali-Georgiana, and Shyam-Wickham: of course, now that you mention it! For me, it's the two sisters, particularly Payal's characterisation, demeanour, kinda regal hair-styling, that brings to mind P&P, as Khushi is a fairly unique characterisation. And the sisters being sent away to another city until the scandal dies down, was another typically regency romance (Heyer, Austen) gambit. I think there were shades of Darcy in ASR right from the start, but I guess just being a rich and successful, unmarried alpha male, who's tall, dark, and handsome would do that. And then ASR's frequent rather crude usage of 'Aukaat' and 'Haisiyat' and lack of a sense of humour as pointers to Darcy's ego make the comparison inescapable.
Hadn't thought about the darcification of ASR as becoming more pronounced until after the guest-house incident. Hadn't thought at that micro level at all, for that matter. Would love to hear more.
And yes, IPK and P&P - love both serials (especially the P&P with Jennifer Ehle) and the P&P movies. Now if only someone would make a movie out of IPK with Barun and Sanaya!!

Nice to meet you too, Sabs.😊
ASR, until we saw him as Arnav vis-a-vis Khushi, (he was Arnav/Chote to Anjali, Nani etc. from the very beginning), was never a Mr.Darcy imo. True that he was tall, rich and handsome, with an attitude, but he was also vindictive, cruel and mocking. These traits and behaviour completely disqualified him as Mr. Darcy, in my opinion. The tide of course turned after his rescue of Khushi from the crumbling guest house. I had talked at length about this here:
With you on the 1995 BBC version of P&P...that is THE Pride and Prejudice for me...and of course, Colin Firth is my Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle is the Elizabeth Bennet.😊 Incidently, did you catch them in The King's Speech?

Just read your Darcification post. Thanks for the link. And agreed, there was little of the gentleman in ASR, unlike Mr. Darcy, who, was very much a (gentle)man of the times. And yes there was a distinct softening in ASR's behaviour towards Khushi after the rescue. No doubt he was duly chastened by the shock of nearly losing her to his nastiness. At one point, when he picks up Khushi's mobile and realises that she is indeed in that structure, Barun even wears the same expression as when Khushi lies (almost) lifeless in his arms, and it dawns on him that he is about to lose her. So yes, the shock turned him around, at least for a while, until she resolutely refused to reciprocate, and then he was back to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or Rajkumar/Shaitaan.
Colin Firth - what can I say, except that I knew someone who couldn't start her day without a viewing of the man emerging from the lake, and I found (and find) it compl reasonable!😆 Loved him in the King's Speech. Did you know his role was first offered to Hugh Grant, who turned it down because of date problems!! Was Jennifer Ehle in KS? Whom did she play?
