I recently finished The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. Its basically a mystery where a huge precious stone called the Moonstone which adorns the statue of an idol is stolen centuries ago from an Indian shrine. Now in 19th century England, the stone is gifted to a young lady on her 18th birthday but on the same night is stolen again. Soon a famous detective from London's Scotland Yard is called in to investigate the case.
Pros: I loved the narrative style of the book. It does not follow the conventional format of a detective solving the case step by step. Instead it depends on several narratives of all those who were directly or indirectly affected by the diamond. Each person presents their version of the events in their own personal style and through that all the clues fall into place and the mystery is finally solved.
Also loved the amount of research that went into this book. Normally 19th century authors write a very biased version of different cultures like India and portray the natives as savages. However, the story of the stone is presented in a very matter-of-fact way even though there are small errors about the religious traditions and mythology.
Cons: Tends to lag at times during some characters' narratives but its just a minor con.
Overall a great read for those interested in works of Arthur Conan Doyle or Agatha Christie. This book is considered to be among the 1st of detective novels from England much before Sherlock Holmes made his entry.
