I was reading this book A night in Call Centre and I must say I was really impressed as well as had a very different opinion now on call centres.

Earlier I was v happy that by setting up call centres in India the youth is getting jobs as well as good salary but how does call centres work..

When most of we Indians are sleeping the call centres employees are on the work to serve Americans and other nations. The youth has to answer how Americans can operate their oven, washing machines, their banking issues..

My question is: Are we not wasting the talent of our current Generation by asking them to serve Americans and answering their "Dumb Question"? Are we happy getting a good salary that we dont mind changing our identity from Nikhil to Nick, Priyanka to Pam. Is this new kind of slavery that we are happily succumbing to?

Nice Topic!!

Personally,I don't like working in a call center and there was a time when I used to look down people who used to work in call center. But as the time passed, tremendous improvement in the market and life style of youngsters really made me think in a positive manner.

Reg the point of underemployment or improper usage of talent : These days no one joins in an MNC expecting to retire from that company at the age of 58 or 60 like any PSU.So,for a fresher with creativity and normal degree job in a call center really gives lot of confidence and economic freedom.

Reg name "What is in name?"😆

now this is where i can a lot. Well i m in call center industry from the last 2 1/2 yrs and i started at age 17 1/2 yrs, as soon as i did give my 12th board exams!!! well there is no future in Call Center industry and i think if u thinking to get a base in call cneter is ok. but if u think as a long term then its a totally no no. i would suggest that try to get what feild u are capable of for time pass its ok working in call center. but u get sooo use to spend(u get good bucks to spend) and then if u go to ur respective field the pay gets less tahn half....
so it depends if its the case of bread and butter or is it case of spoiling urself

How much of the talent was utilized without the call centres is one question which we should ask?

At least in this way young people don't remain unemployed. At the end of the day, money is all that matters. Why do we go to university? In the hopes of getting a higher salary. That's the main reason we pay so much money in the first place, hoping that our initial investment turns a profit.

If call centres give a good pay, then why not? We are also outsourcing our bookkeeping, payroll and filing tax returns services to North America. Those are not necessarily the most skilled jobs either.

But, IMO, no job is demeaning as long as its not illegal or harmful.

I totally agree with what T. said. 👏 Addition to that not all Indian citizen are engineers, or highly qualified professional. There are average people who graduate too who can make very good at call center. It is employment opportunity for these.
