Gratitude and marriage!

I have been reading a lot about how Purvi ought to feel grateful enough to Onir to accept his bigamous status ( if indeed that is true ) or how she should not feel devastated simply because she has a past too and so on!

I am going to do a bit of psychoanalysis here. I could be completely off the mark but this is based on my understanding of human behaviour. In my opinion, gratitude queers the pitch in a marriage. A relationship between two people should be a level playing field. The minute emotions like gratitude, obligation etc enter a marriage, the relationship becomes strained. In real life, I don't think anybody, be they men or women, wants to live with somebody whose feet they feel obliged to wash everyday. Somebody who is a constant reminder of how small they are, how worthless they are as humans in comparison. Practically speaking, everybody has a healthy sense of self worth. Or ego. They want to be with people who make them feel good about themselves. This is not to say that they want to be worshipped at all costs. While most people are amenable to reason and would like their spouses to be honest with them, they wouldn't like being made to feel a lesser person all the time. This does not even have to be done intentionally. But when you are living with a man or woman who makes you feel that you are simply not good enough for them, not verbally or by action but simply by being the people they are, then the relationship is definitely in trouble. However wonderful the person, you are bound to grow resentful of them after a point simply because they remind you of your own imperfections or mistakes. In the long run, this could well be the reason for a relationship to break down.

If I were Purvi, I would be angry with Onir not because I loved him but because he had made me feel small and indebted to him for too long. He had made me feel guilty about my past baggage while cleverly concealing that he had baggage of his own. When our idols fall, we feel the most pain and anger. Onir not being the perfect human being is a sort of betrayal for Purvi who idolated him as one. Here she thought that she had at last found a human being who was so perfect in every way only to find he had feet of clay too. So, the anger is directed at him as well as herself for buying into his image. That is where the sense of betrayal comes from. Her own so called tainted past is not a factor here at all. Purvi suffers from such a low sense of selfworth anyway. This may not seem reasonable or right to a lot of people but then, who said humans are reasonable and right all the time!

^^^ Great psychoanalysis!
I agree! Marriage shd be between 2 equals. Purvi always felt obligated to Onir for marrying her in that condition.
Even Archu thanking Onir was so obvious, what she meant was...Thanks for giving my unmarried pregnant daughter respectability!
That must have stung Purvi even more since she already knew Onir's secret.
Purvi felt even more betrayed because she had been honest and upfront abt her condition but he never confided in her abt his past. She felt he didnt give her respect enough to tell her abt Shalini. But she told him everything abt Arjun and herself.

I agree with you, Pallavi..there is also the question of betraying her trust...she had trusted him enough to share her so called dirty secret with him...but he clearly did not reciprocate the trust. Which Implies that he did not find her worthy of his trust.

And yes, the respectability thing must have stung like hell. This middle class obsession with what they define as moral and respectable is what destroys many lives, in my view. So fine, she slept with a man and got pregnant. How is that a crime? It is not one under the law for sure! Unless we endorse a Taliban style code of conduct!

Exactly! India is not Afghanistan so an unwed mother wont be stoned to death!
So she made a mistake by having PMS with Arjun and then handing him over to Ovi. Does she need to be punished all her life? Does she have to accept her husband's first wife and still stay with him without any reproach or anger? Is her gratitude supposed to make her a slave of Onir's whims?

Very nice post on psycho-analysis and the topic is like a breath of fresh-air amidst stale discussions.👏

I agree with whatever you mentioned on the Onir-Purvi relationship. When Purvi asks Onir earlier (when he proposed) on why does he wants to marry her, he says something. It like 'if my life is useful to someone, so be it". From that time, Purvi would have felt obligated to Onir. There was no overtures of love , Onir only starts to miss her and feel for her after she left to Mumbai.

On the same note, I see Purvi in similar dilemma in relationships with Archana and Arjun as well. She knows both of them love her dearly and unconditionally but her low self-esteem makes her feel lot unworthy of that love. What has Purvi, the orphan annie, done to deserve the love of a man who owns the compnay and she being a mere employee? She is uncomfortable with the difference in social standing. She is apologetic that she is the cause of OVi's pain even though she knows Arjun only loves her and no one else. She is aware of the strain she has put all the other relationships because of the marriage proposal with Arjun. More importantly, she is constantly made aware of what strain this has put her mother in her relationship with her husband and rest of the family.

This was the girl who felt thankful and greatful when her marriage was fixed with Vinay, never mind he is below her in ranks at office. Never mind that she is beautiful, strong minded, driven and a achiever and that Vinay was no match to her.

Purvi's efforts so far has been attempts to repay her obligations and make this a level-playing field for all her relationships. She sacrified Arjun for Archana, she sacrificed her baby for Arjun-Ovi and she offered herself to Onir - all because of the obligations that she has all along felt in her relationships.

Excellent points!
Thats why I had said that Purvi has low self esteem. She always feels she doesnt deserve the love she gets and the happiness beckoning her. In fact she seems to be running away from happiness, i.e. Arjun!

Could not have said something better. Each line u have said is true. Purvi thought of onir as her idol and onir made her feel that way by behaving so nicely with her and she idolize him becauz he married even after he knew that purvi was pregnant with someone else. Onir acted that he was the best and pure and kind of all and made purvi guilty of what she had done in the past when onir himself has a past which he hid from her. Purvi didn't hide from onir that she is pregnant. It's obvious that purvi would be angry with him and leave him as onir acted that he is mahan that he a single man accepted an unmarried pregnant girl. So I would say purvi is right and she shoul leave onir.

Vasu, I agree on Purvi's low self-esteem. She is almost apologetic for her very existence since she believes herself to be the root cause of all the problems that her loved ones face. Hence her often stupid attempts to make herself worthy of these relationships. If I had to sum it up in a single sentence, I believe she thinks she owes the world everything while Ovi thinks the world owes her everything, Neither is a healthy state of mind in my opinion.
