Very nicely put Sowmyaa.

I have a very close friend with a very cute girl who cannot hear. I am very proud of my friend and her strength in helping her child have a decent life. It does take a special parent to take care of a special child! 👏👏 to them!

i read an article in an old issue of femina, called 'children of a lesser god'... it was basically about special children and how some parents struggled to come to terms with the fact that their child was not going to be 'normal'...

what would YOU do, if your child turned out to have an abnormality... maybe a physical disability, a deformity... or a mental problem... or simply something like learning disability... would you abandon the child??

i know, you will INSTINCTIVELY say NEVER, I WOULD NEVER abandon my child for ANYTHING!!

but please give it a thought...

Very Emotional Topic!!

Some argued that children are gift of god and abortion is a sin. There was a physically handicapped member who argued that such a fetus should be aborted because by bringingsuch a child to this world is making them dependent on you whole life. There are many schools now which help these special kids overcome their disability but it is a fact that they are still dependant on you. Only 1 in several is successful as a normal child.<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Hypothetically if I were in such a situation then I would never abandon the child.

Maya,
I think we had discussed similar issue on DM too. About if you find out your fetus has down syndrome what would you want to do. That's the reason they do the test so early in first tremester so you can have choice to abort if you dont want to give birth to such baby. I think it has to do with couple's choice as it's their baby, but it is worth considering what PJ wrote. I think when it comes to "real" life and raising such children it is just your lifetime commitment and mental challenge as well.

but how can they abort the child who is not seen the world yet....
They are gifts of god and sooo innocent....why to abort them? just because its challenging to take care of such child and have to devote much time in their upbringing.
The parents never throw their children out if they met with an accident after they r grown but still dependent on them

One of my dad's friends is a special educator..
he treates children with mental disabilities on a very wide scale including speech retardation......

convincing mothers that their child isnt normal is one of the most difficult aspect of the treatmet.. they are special children who neednt bother about the troubles of the world..
there always worry that there is nobody to take care of their Kid after their life..and that is a fact

While they are special it takes a special set of parents friends and relatives to treat them special....

watch the tamil movie "Anjali".. it is a mani ratnam movie on a retarded little girl.. you will understand what I am trying to tell here

children of a lesser god...
Most of mental and some physical disabilities are discovered only after few years of life in a child, 2 -3 years, and by that time parents particularly mothers have already established the strongest bond with their children so psychologically speaking I can't imagine mothers abandoning their kids in those cases.
It's impossible to comprehend what's going on their mind and judge a person who is aborting their unborn child under what circumstances so I would always refrain from commenting on it

My Aunt has a Special Child who is only one year older than me. All his sisters and brother[all married] help their mom to take care of him. My Aunt's biggest concern is that who will take care of the child after her.

He was a baby when his father demanded his mom to send him to orphanage 😡 ...She didn't agree and the couple divorced. She always says that this is my child, why should i give it to someone else?! Even if i had known about him ealier [20 years ago technology wasn't that advanced], He is my child!!

Now there is a mental and emotional conflict here, If you know what the situation is going to be.. then assess yourself accordingly. Are you able to give that special child those SPECIAL facilities? Are you able to bear a child, who forever will be a child, dependent on you and on others, his future, his current state, your financial position, his security,........there are many things!! If your Answer is yes, then go ahead! May GOD provide you with easiness and happiness..If no, then its better to think realistically, practically and wisely because its NOT easy at all.
