Bollywood
A land of movie stars of ginormous stature. The Bachchans, the Khans, the Kapoors, the Chopras, the Mukherjee and the one and only Hashmi! We dream about them, we go crazy for them, about them, on them, with them.. you name it.
But lately there has been another "wood" in the hood, where superstars are being created every day. There is a Lokhande, a Kapoor, the Roy brothers, a Sobti, an Irani, too many Karans to count on your hands and feet, the Dhamis and the one and only Choudhary! No need to guess the name of this "wood".
Tellywood
Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of this "wood" is that unlike movies, where the audience has to wait for the release date to see their favourite stars, tellywood stars has a release every day.
So who are these Tellywood superstars that I speak of? Telly Tadka has put together a small list of stars from the world of television, who has managed to leave their footprint in the walk of fame of telly land.
We present to you part one of the list for best actors.
Ram Kapoor ' In a time of 6packs, 8packs, washboard stomach, toned biceps and triceps, here is one actor who has the ultimate pack ' a great sense of humour, spontaneity, lethargically natural acting and not a shred of inhibition in any part of his body. He is the one and only Ram Kapoor. Currently seen on Balaji Telefilm's Bade Acche Lagte Hain, on SONY, Ram Kapoor has had a tryst with both movies and television, making him one of the few actors to have found success on both mediums. Films like Monsoon Wedding, Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow and Sudhir Mishra's critically acclaimed Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi, will see a very dashing and trim Ram Kapoor. His other successful ventures in films include the Karthik Calling Karthik, Udaan, last year's blockbuster Student Of The Year and recently released under the Yash Raj films banner, Mere Dad Ki Maruti. On TV, he was involved in successful ventures like Heena, Kavita, Ghar Ek Mandir (where he met his wife, actress Gautami Kapor) and Manshaa. But his breakthrough came when he appeared as Jai Walia in Kasamh Se, opposite Prachi Desai. It catapulted him to Tellywood's one of the most sought after actors. Ram Kapoor didn't just limit himself to acting, but also taken part in reality show such as Chalti Ka Naam Antakshari, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, Kaun Banega Crorepati and hosted many award and television shows.
Barun Sobti - Iss Obsession Ka Kya Naam Doon?! The "Sobti Apocalypse" runs not just nationally, but internationally too. He belongs to the Generation X group of actors, to have emerged from the cult show Dill Mill Gayye. Soon after he bagged the lead role in Baat Hamari Pakki Hai, where he was paired opposite Ankita Sharma. But it doesn't matter what he has done previously. What matters is that he was part of an epic show, that has a very apt name; wondered by all the fans with this Sobti obsession ' Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. Produced by Gul Khan and her 4 Lions Films, the show featured him opposite Sanaya Irani. His refreshingly natural way of acting, being enigmatic and a natural charmer not just on screen but off-screen too, and giving his uber cool character Arnav Singh Raizada a stature of his own, is what makes this actor, one of the best actors of tellywood. Following the show's conclusion, Sobti went on to sign 2 Bollywood films, one of which is readying for release. So Sobti lovers do not despair, for he will be back and that too on the big screen for all of you to drool on, very soon!
Gurmeet Choudhary - "Inn aankhon ki masti ke mastane hazaron hain, dil cheez kya hain aap meri jaan lijiye".
umm' or something along the lines of that! That's what happens when this actor pops up on our screens. Lots of sighing, stupid smiles on our faces, and finding ourselves drowning in those deep brown eyes. He was bestowed upon us as Ram, we saw him as the perfect pati and then he conquered our hearts, minds and everything else as Maan Singh Khurana. In short, he made history with one show that even after it's ending, still holds a very soft corner in the audiences' hearts ' Geet Hui Sabse Parayi. Another one of Gul Khan and her 4 Lions Films venture, Gurmeet Choudhary was paired opposite Drashti Dhami. And the rest was history as they say. Gurmeet has the amazing talent of making a character as his own and breathing life into the character with subtle nuances. He did that with Maan Singh Khurana and he is doing the same in his current show Punar Vivah. Playing the character of Yash Scindya ' once a widow with 2 kids, now having remarried with 6 kids, with such maturity and persona, it is hard not to fall in love with this actor. Gurmeet also proved he is multi-talented ' last year's Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa winner, he has performed in numerous awards shows and will soon be seen hosting the semifinals of Master Chef India on Star Plus.
Karan Singh Grover - Qubool Hai. Multiplied by infinity! That's what all the girls' and some guys too' would like to say whenever this handsomely body appears on our screens. We first noticed him in Kasautii Zindagii Ki, where he was paired opposite Jennifer Winget. But what really made us NOTICE him was the cult show, Dill Mill Gayye. It's what the audiences were saying too after seeing him play the character of Dr. Armaan Malik. Armaan's lady love on the show saw 3 actress changes, finally resting with (once again) Jennifer Winget playing the role of Dr. Riddhima Gupta. And if dil didn't mil gaye then, it certainly did on the 19th day of the fourth month of the year 2012, when Karan finally married his costar Jennifer. It's not just his handsome looks and boyish charms that put KSG on this list; Karan has the ability to create an emotional bond with the audience, through his character. He did that with Armaan Malik and he is doing it now with Asad Ahmed Khan, on Zee TV's Qubool Hai; coincidentally another one of Gul Khan and her 4 Lions Films ventures!
Kunal Karan Kapoor ' KKK' no that wasn't my SRK impression! KKK aka Kunal Karan Kapoor has had an interesting journey in the world television. He first appeared in one of Star One's hugely popular show, Remix. He followed it up by yet another great performance in Left Right Left. He was later seen on Zee TV's Mayka and Star Plus's Mann Kee Awaaz Pratigya. But his performance in Colors TV's Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha (season one and two) is what won over the audience. His bohemian approach to acting and "say-it-how-i-see-it" attitude, is what makes this little gem stand out from the rest. No wonder recently he bagged the best actor in a lead role award, at the 12th Indian Televisions Academy (ITA) Awards.
