"Sir? Sir!"
He felt a hesitant hand on his shoulder and jolted up in surprise, coming nose to nose with the pretty air hostess leaning over him.
The sudden burst of colour her red lips offered confused him and he rubbed his eyes groggily before turning to look at his surroundings. Her eyes creased with worry and she watched him uncertainly before stepping back.
He had looked so distressed in his sleep...
"Sir? Uh, are you alright?"
He smiled with an easy charm and the sight of his dimples seemed to soothe her doubts.
"Don't worry, I'm fine. Not unlike yourself," he added with a mischievous wink.
The air hostess rolled her eyes with a smile and nodded towards the gate. "Your flight is boarding, Sir."
He thanked her and picked up his jacket from the chair beside him.
Fumbling for his boarding pass, he tried to push the dreams from his mind. These fragments... the flashes... he had no desire to piece these memories together.
Unnerved, he walked through the tunnel leading to the plane.
He hadn't dreamt of her in years.
* * *
He looked down at his boarding pass in disbelief. How had he not looked at the seat number until now?
When it came to superstitions, he wasn't much of a believer. In fact, the only one he was even slightly partial to was one that had proven to have quite an effect on his life.
Twenty three - his unlucky number. The Mother of all numbers... whose Mother, incidentally, just happened to be the woman scorned herself.
Eris, the Goddess of chaos.
The air hostess pointed in the direction of his seat and it was only when his eyes fell on an aisle seat - number twenty four - that his frown began to disappear.
A dark figure with long brown hair and an even longer black skirt sat facing the window in the seat beside his.
He smirked and turned back the cuffs of his shirt. Well... he had only been slightly partial...
Approaching her with an easy smile, he cleared his throat until she turned to face him.
Two dark, kohl-lined eyes watched him, shrewdly at first and then, when he gestured towards his seat, with a friendly spark.
"Sorry." She moved to let him through to the window seat.
"Please," he replied with a lazy grin. "Don't be."
He expected her to pick up the conversation after that and was surprised when she reached forward and picked up a magazine instead.
Undeterred, he shifted backwards, attempting to see the cover of the magazine. He possessed as much Bollywood trivia as anyone else in the country and he reasoned that discussing Kareena Kapoor's career trajectory or the many impressive performances of Nawazuddin Siddiqui was as good a place to start as any.
He was horrified, therefore, to see her thumbing through a copy of a physics magazine.
Science, he thought with a shudder that came quite naturally. An ever-constant disinterest and the distractions offered in class by... biology had ensured that this was a world he knew and cared little about.
Grumbling silently, he took out his own copy of Times of India before turning to the Life & Style section.
"That's a great play."
"Excuse me?" He mentally kicked himself the uninspired reply.
"That play, Waiting for Godot." She reached over towards the newspaper and pointed to where the review was printed. "It's really... something."
"Oh."
He felt confused, more so at his pathetic replies than at the fact that the beautiful, physics-loving woman beside him was recommending to him his favourite play.
She looked away, brushing off what must have appeared to her as his disinterest, and turned a page of her magazine.
He leaned forward, ready for another attempt at conversation, when he recognised the photo of a man in the magazine.
"Hey, it's him! It's that scientist guy!"
His sudden exclamation caused her to drop the magazine and as she picked it up, she raised an eyebrow at him.
"Well, it is a science magazine..." Her voice dripped with obvious sarcasm.
He rolled his eyes. "Very funny. No, I mean that he's all over the news lately. For his health or something. He was a physicist, right?"
Her eyes narrowed. "Was?" She replied coldly. "He's not dead, you know,"
"Oh. Really? Then what's all the fuss about?"
Irritated by his tactlessness, she pointed wordlessly towards the caption of the photo. His eyes widened as he scanned the words.
"Heart attack? Ouch."
She looked at him, still a little offended, before smiling coolly and returning to her magazine.
They did not speak during take-off, which suited him just fine. He was content watching through the window as his world literally disappeared beneath his feet; it was his favourite part of the journey.
He remained content, in fact, until over half an hour into the flight but after that, the view outside offered him nothing but darkness.
It felt foolish to introduce himself to her now but after the awkwardness of their previous conversation, he decided that playing it safe was the best bet.
Still facing the night sky, he practiced the smile that worked best on the most beautiful of women - a little charming, a little arrogant - before beginning.
"I'm Dev, by the way." Finally, he turned to face her. "Dev..."
His smile fell.
She was already asleep.
"...Khurana."
