oh No I am trying to glorify the western culture or lifestyle , all I am saying is that we have no rights to criticise other cultures when our own has so many flaws in the sense that so many atrocities are comitted in the name of traditions.

I tried to reason out with my mother and MIL but both refused to even think abt it , for them tradition and culture is above everything in life.

There was an incident where the gal who was getting married refused to allow her father to wash her husbands feet citing the reason that her father was an elderly man and that he should be given the respect he deserves . Now I would have respected her view and appreciated her but there are so many who ridiculed her coz for them tradition was more important and as per the reasoning , the brides father should do it coz the groom takes on the avataar of lord vishnu and the bride, goddess lakshmi. When I was told this , I wanted to know why werent the groom's father or mother washing the brides feet if they considered the bride to be goddess lakshmi , does it change for women goddesses and women in general . Why this descrimination , why was the girl ridiculed as being high headed when her intention behind it was purely her love and respect for her father.

There are still so many places where sati is practiced , why bcoz its our tradition. There are still so many places esp temples where low caste people are not allowed to go near god where as others can .

There are many more and thats why I wonder how can we ridicule western culture when our own isnt perfect or good and have so many flaws which spreads only sadness suffering and descrimination and not happiness and peace. I am not saying all traditions but there are many which does not spread anything but pain and suffering

)Traditions and cultures do play an important role on our daily lives and also on our decisions in life (atleast some). But i do agree sometimes these traditions gt very extreme and carried away. Culture i think arises from the roots of religion mixed with some of man-made rules of society or certain group.

One thing that i find similar is that women are also not allowed to enter masjid when their period. (not that u all needed to know i guess 😆 ).

But what you write is true and i believe some part of our culture is very unfair.

I think it should be a two way traffic...
most of the customs were developed by brahmins who were licensed by the society to study the sriptures and then educate the society about them...their interpretations were distorted sometimes and led to some meaningless traditions which had hidden agendas behind them( making money, establishing positions of power etc.)

However not all rituals should be discarded...I organised a puja when my younger daughter was 40 days old...I was fortunate enough to have found a very learned pundit who took pains to explain all the elaborate rituals...and suddenly all the things which seemed useless and a waste of time seemed to appear to have so much meaning...
why jal is offered , why the akshat is offered etc etc...everything seemed to have a deeper and beautiful meaning...For the first time I truly felt proud to be a Hindu!!

Tina, Welcome to Debate Mansion. It is so nice to see you hear. Wish you post more here. 😊

Coming back to topic. I completely agree with Maya that if we believe something is not right and doesn't make sense then we should take lead and root it out from our life rather than blindly following it or even supporting it by justifying it. There are quite a few such things that we don't follow in our family even being brahmin. Also, I think some of these older cultural traditions of Hindu society could be one of the reasons why people, particularly from lower caste, were willing to convert to Christianity in past 200 to 300 years in India.

Hi All!

Traditions really play an important role in human's life. They make a person to have right thought, right living, right life style.Traditions don't say everything. But its upto an individual to modify, ignore the traditions.

I don't beleive in rituals much but still have faith in the traditions some where in the heart.

Its right to oppose something when we have a clear idea on it.Just opposing the views for the sake opposition does'nt make anysense.

Cheers,

Mythili
