Their voices and singing-styles are not compatible with the kind of music being made today. Shaan's case is different though. He rose to fame post-2000, when the typical filmy geet was beginning to get more experimental and eclectic (and also sometimes more noisy and unmelodic). Shaan has been outrun by younger singers like Benny Dayal and Ash King, because, they belong to the same school of singing, are perhaps more skilled, and possibly they come cheaper too. I think that time is gone for good when 2-3 singers ruled the industry, lending voices to every single film. In fact, with technology advancing the way it is, the individual brilliance of the singers is no longer as important as the dexterity of the music director. It is the music director who rules the roost when it comes to playback music in our time.
