Prime Minister of Canada Mr Stephen Harpar has declared Quebec "A Nation" within "Canada".so now Quebec is a nation within a Nation😕

Is it right to declare a state as "A nation " ? Tommorrow some more people will ask for seperate nation then should they also get it?or is it a political stunt?

as we Asians r facing the same problem where in almost every country some groups want their own seperate country.

whats ur views abt it ?

I think he was trying to diffuse the Bloc Quebecois who were going to harp about Quebec being a separate Francophone nation.

Going back to his entire quote:

"Do Quebecers form a nation within a united Canada? The answer is yes," Harper on Wednesday told a cheering House of Commons to numerous standing ovations. "Do Quebecers form an independent nation? The answer is no -- and it will always be no."

https://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/11/23/canada.quebec.a p/index.html

IMO, all Harper wanted to say was that Quebec has its own diverse culture and is self sufficient. But, it is still a part of Canada.

But, I agree with you. The word "nation" was used too loosely over here. Considering the BQ separatist agenda, Harper should have thought more before making that statement.

As it is, we already had one referendum which tried to separate Quebec and failed by a narrow margin. Even Alberta has been harping about getting separated for years!

Well i guess he thinks that because (well i think that too) because a majority of the ppl in Qubque ( i know my spelling suckss) WANT to be a seperate nation...the reasons for that i dont compleatly understand...😕

Yea, I agree that Harper calling Quebec a "nation within a nation" was kind of stupid, because the term "nation" kind of suggests..an independent country! 😕 But it's good that at least he reiterated the fact that it ISN'T and SHOULDN'T be independant afterwards.. 😳 and I think that Quebecois ppl. want to be a separate nation not to improve their living standards, but to preserve their culture and "way of life"..although I personally believe that their culture can be preserved while they are still part of the Cdn. nation!! French is one of the official languages of Canada, and Quebec already has a separate, Napoleonic Civil Code..Quebec is often given more representation in the govt. than required when looking at their population, and are often given special privileges to boot... so I don't see why they should want to be independant! ..Especially since they wouldn't be able to survive independantly without Canada's support, anyways! 😳
