Why just point out at romance genre? It applies to every genre. Salman in Dabangg2 plays a man who is about to turn a father. So he obviously cant be playing an older guy. In Singham Ajay Devgan is not married and its the same for SOS. In K786 Akshay's family is looking for a girl for him. In Aarakshan Saif plays a guy who is out of college for a year or so. In S26 again Akshay plays a not yet married guy. All these films had diverse genres and didnt have much of a role for a heroine. They could have easily done away with the pre-wedding romance and shown romance between an older couple with a proper casting.

Hirani wrote a script for college folks, complete with a flashback and all, and only approached oldies for it...he only had SRK and then Aamir in mind.. People let him get away with it just because the film was good & Aamir botoxed his face enough to pass off as a 20 year old. Of course JTHJ was weird on another level because it was specifically written for SRK to do.

The romance genre is definitely most affected by the ageist trends for sure because of the idea that folks above 30, or at most 35 just can't fall in love or deal with issues relating to love. Hence the guys must be 25 and the girls must be 21, with just some exceptions. Well the women still get strong roles in romances, but the younger ones. The older ones have little hope on that front because while they can make the guys pass off as 25, the older ones simply can't be the 25 year olds. It's all interconnected I guess.

True, but what I meant was that Hirani didnt write the characters with the actors in mind. The idea was of engineers in college, so there wasnt much he could do with that. Yes, casting Aamir was, like you said, bending the rules, as was casting Saif. But what I meant was, those scripts werent written with an actor in mind. 3 Idiots is adapted from a book on college life. The character was already there. By default, you're restricted.

But compare that to say, Yash Chopra, who was writing an original script and he knew that he wanted Shahrukh. He had the freedom to choose the age group of any love story he wanted to share. That's what I meant.

Absolutely agree with the rest of your post about romance being most affected.
See with action, the age group sorta blurs and is pushed to the backdrop. Chulbul COULD have been in his 30s, 40s. Its irrelevent to the script. The fact that he went out to marry a young girl is also not uncommon in many areas of India/Pak where young women are married off to much older men. He could have been a man in 40s about to become a father. He could also have been younger, not saying he isnt, but its irrelevant. The romance track is in the background in action flicks, and so much so, that it doesnt even strike me.

But in romance, suddenly your age becomes a bit more relevant. That determines the kind of romance the lovers share, the issues they face, the activities they indulge in that connect the two.
Age is much more relevant in a romance film than in action, IMO.

And our heroines will also benefit a lot more from more mature love stories and having the heroe's play their ages in the romance genre than in the action genre, where most likely the heroine's role isnt even that important.

Bollywood makes films to make money... thats the simple calculations except few films... most of the films content is senseless... so they're thoughts are also limited that 30 less heroine can serve them well...

Bollywood is a place to relive your fantasies on-screen. Theater screen is where your dream come true...

Now who has a fantasy to romance 35 yr old woman??????

Bollywood has started accepting realistic movies slowly...especially with Gen-next but it will take lots of time to change it...till then happy dreaming...
