"I am not one to predict anything": Sunny Deol refuses to foretell Ranbir Kapoor's Ramayana’s fate

Sunny Deol is stepping into a role that comes with more than just scale and spectacle. As Lord Hanuman in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, the actor is taking on a character deeply rooted in Indian popular culture. With Ranbir Kapoor playing Lord Rama and Yash portraying Raavan, the film has already become one of the most talked-about projects in Indian cinema. Yet, Deol appears to be approaching the massive project with a sense of responsibility rather than pressure to prove a point.

Sunny Deol On Ramayana’s Scale And The Backlash

In a recent interview, Deol admitted that he would rather not predict whether Ramayana will change Indian cinema before seeing the finished film himself. For him, the trailer offers a promising glimpse, particularly with its large-scale visual effects, but the real test will be how the complete story comes together.

The actor also placed his faith in Nitesh Tiwari and the film’s creative team. Deol hopes that despite its enormous scale, Ramayana retains the simplicity of its central story and connects with viewers on an emotional level.

The film has already faced its share of discussion and criticism, particularly around its casting and interpretation of familiar mythological figures. Deol, however, seems more focused on the responsibility of getting his own part right than reacting to the noise surrounding the film.

Ranbir Kapoor As Rama And Deol’s Hanuman Challenge

Speaking about his co-star Ranbir Kapoor, Deol has previously expressed confidence in the actor taking on the role of Rama. Their pairing has naturally attracted considerable attention, given the importance of the bond between Rama and Hanuman in the epic.

For Deol, however, playing Hanuman is a challenge of a different kind. The character has an unforgettable screen legacy because of Dara Singh’s performance in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana. Deol has openly acknowledged that legacy, making it clear that he does not see himself as someone who can replace the legendary actor.

He believes Dara Singh’s Hanuman occupies a special place that cannot simply be recreated. Instead of attempting to imitate that performance, Deol wants to bring his own understanding to the character.

Sunny Deol Says He Still Has A Long Way To Go

Interestingly, Deol revealed that his journey on Ramayana has only just begun. At the trailer launch, he said he had completed only a small portion of his work and still had considerable filming ahead.

That also explains why audiences have not yet received a proper look at his Hanuman. While the character is expected to have a limited presence in the first instalment, reports suggest his role could become far more prominent in Ramayana Part Two.
