CHAPTER 2

"Good Morning . Welcome to the St Thomas Institute of Medical Sciences"

Ganga wriggled in her seat, excited beyond words. She had turned up at the lecture hall 20 minutes early and booked herself a seat in the very first row to get the best possible view. She had watched with fascination as the long stream of bored looking students had poured into the classroom. And now, the Dean had finally turned up and was currently standing on the podium giving his welcoming speech . She leaned forward not wanting to miss a single word

" Today, you are going to enter the hospital, not as a student to learn but as a doctor, to serve. Today you finally approach a patient, not as someone to study but as a person who needs help. Help which you have to give. Today you take your first step into not just a profession , but a life which has to and should be dedicated to the care of all those who come to you seeking help. Today you enter into a life of service. Always remember, from today, the patient is always first, no matter what it costs you"

Ganga found herself nodding fiercely, agreeing with every single word. The man speaking them gazed at her for a second before continuing with his speech

"William Gill once said-We do not treat the pneumonia, we treat the pneumonic patient. I would like each one of you to ponder on that ."

He paused before giving a small smile and saying

" On another note I would like to congratulate all 50 of you for making the spot here. As I'm sure you know St. Thomas has consistently been ranked as India's top Medical School for the past 15 years and finding a seat here is ……..not the easiest thing to do"

A ripple of laughter came from the audience at the massive understatement

" Most of you have done your Under Graduate degree here but for the few who have come in through the postgraduate entrance, welcome. You will be doing your internship here for an year before proceeding into the postgraduate degree of your choice. I hope you realize how incredibly fortunate you are to get accepted into an institute like this and choose to work accordingly. I hope…..that you make us very proud. Thank You"

Ganga rose along with the others ,clapping enthusiastically, tucking away each word into her brain. This was it. She was finally here and about to start her first day as a doctor. Her hand unconsciously went to the small wooden locket around her neck and clenched it tight.

She would make him proud, she thought fiercely . She would make him proud

"Mannu"

"And these are the interns cabins" the lady guiding them through the hospital announced with a triumphant flourish. Ganga looked around her round-eyed. A single room was twice the size of the admissions hall at her previous college. In fact the entire hospital could fit in around 50 buildings the size of her old college. Whew…!

"You have each been allotted to a resident . 4 of you will be working under one resident in each of your rotations. The lists have been put up in the student library. You may go and check" the lady concluded before turning about and leaving them to their devices.

Ganga immediately took off not wanting to waste any time. The student library, she discovered was actually a small room in the same block as their individual cabins, reserved exclusively for the interns. She opened the door cautiously and entered the empty room before promptly falling in love

The room though small had a roomy, airy feel to it. An entire wall was made up of glass through which the sunlight streamed in. With yellow walls, a polished mahogany floor and stacks of books lining the remaining two walls the room had a cheery , happy atmosphere which irresistibly drew Ganga in. She traced her hands wonderingly across the soft plush of the cushioned armchairs dotting the room. She was going to sit here, sink into one of the chairs and read to her heart's content, undisturbed . She wondered if this was what it felt when dreams came true

A loud noise startled her out of her daydreaming and she hurriedly made her way to the notice board at the far end of the room. Her eyes rapidly scanned the lists before they came to a stop at her name

"Ganga Rathod" she read aloud her finger moving along the line

" First rotation-Surgery. Resident –Gauri Saxena"

Surgery. Her face fell slightly. If there was something she wasn't all too fond of in this much-adored profession, it was Surgery. Primarily because she lacked all forms of necessary coordination. Plainly speaking( as her previous Professor had so delightfully done) she was a clumsy dolt who had to practice 50 times on dolls to stich a simple suture in a single line

Ah well. She was here in her dream school . That in itself was more than enough

Briskly she turned and walked towards the door, her head whirring and already planning out a time table. No time to waste. She had to find her resident Gauri

CHAPTER 3

Ganga stared fascinated at the huge jaws moving up and down shredding the tiny piece of gum . The apparition it belonged to was dangling on the edge of a desk, her long legs swinging back and forth, absentmindedly twirling her hair which had multi-colored highlights in it around a finger with 4 sparkling rings on it. She was currently staring into space with a blank face, oblivious to Ganga's repeated calls for her attention

"MAM!"

Miss Highlights shot off her chair upsetting the expensive looking bag on her lap which fell down with a thud. A dozen tubes and bottles of varying sizes and shapes rolled out on to the floor. Ganga muttered a silent prayer of thanks that there wasn't anyone else in the Out Patient room right now other than herself and Miss Highlights

A very angry Miss Highlights. Ganga gulped.

" What the hell!" Highlights screeched , her face turning from vacuous to furious

Ganga suddenly found that she had lost her voice

" Holy…..! That's a Laura Mercier concealor that's rolling in the dirt there because of you! How Dare you yell at a senior resident, you…you little geek!"

'Mam, I'm so sorry, I was trying to call you but you didn't respond so I raised my voice a little but I didn't think…. All I want to do is find Dr.Gauri and the nurse told me to ask you, so…" Ganga said desperately, her voice trailing off at the basilisk glare the girl was giving her

" What do you want with Gauri" she snapped out

" I'm an intern, I'm supposed to report to her" the words tumbled out of Ganga's mouth, her voice trembling

The girl in front of her seemed even more incensed

" Which batch?" she hissed out

" Pardon?" Ganga asked, confused

"Which batch were you in during your MBBS?" the girl asked again, clearly frustrated with Ganga's lack of comprehension

"I'm a scholarship student Mam. From Kanswa in the Kota district" she said hastily, not wanting to upset the girl in front of her more

There was a minute's dangerous silence during which Highlights seemed to swell like a balloon as she digested this piece of information. Her face turned from red to purple and her mouth gaped open for a couple of seconds before she managed to gain enough control of herself to ask

" You are a scholarship student and you had the nerve to not only approach me but upset me into upsetting my bag and makeup pouch?! Do you know who I am btw? Like, seriously? FYI bitch, that stuff you are picking up right now cost enough to buy that dowdy outfit you are wearing a 100 times over. Maybe a million zillion times. OMG what are you?!!"

Ganga hastily gathered up all the rolling bottles and placed them in the bag again, ,mentally willing herself to calm down. Loud noises had always shaken her up, more so after that……………NO! She wasn't going to think about that, certainly not here

12,3,4, she counted as the familiar sensation swept over her again

"Freak!" the other girl spat at her and was about to elaborate on that theme when the inner door thankfully opened and a small petite woman walked in

" What is all this noise Lehna? Do I have to explain the concept of peace and quiet to you again? Or are you too dumb to comprehend that?" the woman asked , her voice icy

Highlights spluttered at that but thankfully fell silent. The woman's razor sharp gaze then moved to Ganga

"Who are you?" she rapped out

" Ga…nga" Ganga stammered "I'm here to see Dr.Gauri"

The woman's brow furrowed in confusion at that. Ganga mutely stared at her, too scared to speak another word

This woman looked much better than her recent acquaintance. With wavy black hair falling just below her shoulders, a perfect oval face with light eyes she could definitely be called a beauty. And her sense of dressing too was way more tasteful than her companions, who not content with the highlights was wearing a purple spangled halter top paired with blue leggings. This woman was dressed in a tailor cut churidhar suit, extremely professional and expensive with no accessorizing other than the diamond drops in her ears. Ganga immediately felt frumpy ,dowdy and nervously smoothed her hands over her own blue and pink salwar which cost precisely 250 Rs

She reminded herself to speak" I am a new intern. I am posted under Dr. Gauri for this month"

The woman's brow cleared but her expression soured. In a voice which clearly expressed her displeasure she said

" I am Dr. Gauri"

" Oh" said Ganga feebly

" I assume you have come to see me for instructions?" Dr. Gauri asked contemptuously

Ganga could only nod

" Well there's only one. I am well aware that this college's dumb rules state that I have to look after and teach you the ropes. However I happen to be an extremely busy person with plans of my own which cannot accommodate you. Hence kindly stay out of my way and cope with your life yourself. Do I make myself clear?!" The words came out like a whiplash making Ganga jump

Gauri turned and walked back inside before stopping to say" Oh and inform the remaining idiots under me of the same" . She then proceeded to walk back into her room without a single backward glance followed by a smirking Highlights/Lehna

Ganga stood there torn between tears and laughter. 15 minutes ago she was on the top of the world. And now…..

She trudged outside making her way back to her cabin. She might as well find her group mates and pass on the message before they ended up in the same situation as her

The introduction of Gauri was very intresting. This rudey girl Lehna need some lessions oh Our cute sidhi sadi Ganga ! Dr. jagdish ki entry kab hogi. Waiting for the next one. 😃
