Amitabh Bachchan concerned over slow growth in rural India

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who arrived in Bhopal with his family yesterday for the shooting of Prakash Jha's upcoming film Satyagraha, has expressed concern over the slow growth in rural India.

"The rural and the village India still totters, and it is depressing to see them suffer. Many examples of those that do, one has encountered on KBC. But they are minuscule," Amitabh Bachchan wrote on his blog.

At the same time he has praised India's progress after the opening of the economy. "Airports, highways, hotels of great calibre, housing… all becoming a part of interior India. An India that stands on the threshold of huge progress and development," the actor wrote.

Sachin Gokhale/Firstpost

"The opening up of the economy has brought in huge benefits of investment from the Western world, and infrastructure and many other factors have become responsible for this growth."

Amitabh Bachchan arrived yesterday along with wife Jaya Bachchan, son Abhishek, daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and grand-daughter Aradhya and from the airport, the family drove to Jaya's mother Indira Bhaduri's place in the posh Shyamla Hills area.

Referring to the new generation, Amitabh Bachchan said, "Also the new generation that is now taking decisions and forming the psyche of the nation is young – perhaps all born after the liberalisation of the economy. The youth is projected to be the largest young brigade in the world! They have not lived or experienced the elements that we went through. They are enthused and aggressive in their search for their ultimate destination."

Stating that it is the youth of the country who were calling shots, the Big B wrote in his blog, "… They are deciding the culture, the films, the clothing, music, opinion, politics, morals of this country on the move. If we do not respect them they have the capacity to over run us by the strength of their sheer numbers."

"At the same time if we give them good guidance, education, opportunities, they will and do possess the brilliance to follow the paths that would be beneficial. They need to be understood and they need to be channeled! And they will be of benefit…of this I am certain… for there is one very major factor in favour…they passionately care and love India!!"

Big B, who landed at the Bhopal's Raja Bhoj International Airport yesterday, also praised the new Bhopal Airport saying that "it resembles a space craft."

"The new airport at Bhopal…a spanking new facility, which resembles a space craft, is a revelation for me. When I first came to the city in 1973 soon after marriage to Jaya, the place was just a vacant isolated cottage like airport, and an airfield that could only take small range propeller aircraft. and now…" he wrote.

India's problem is its corruption, once you combat that, everything will fall in place. India is full of resources and capital, its a shame its deepening the pockets of corrupt leaders.

Whatever happened with that issue where they purchased expensive planes from Italy that Obama passed up on. Heard bits and pieces from my dad. What a shame.

couldn't agree more..the chopper scam is the latest addition to the list!
apparently kick backs were received in a deal for VVIP choppers!

now this has given ammo to the other parties..and I'm quite sure the budget session(which is to start in 10 days) will be disrupted, leading to further loss to the exchequer.

@ czarcastic India is militarily pretty strong, perhaps the crores they spent on fixing a deal with Italy could have gone to local manufactures and in turn would have been a boost to the Indian economy. India has good engineers and i am sure as hell they could have developed something equally as good if not better.

^^ the contract could have been given to local manufacturers..but then it wouldn't have led to the increase in the balance of the swiss bank accounts of those involved..i was just reading the money trail..if the amount of effort and time they spend on covering their tracks(unsuccessfully) is spent in doing the work they are supposed to, our country would be in a much better position:)

Slow growth in rural economy??? Hmmm...interesting...

So AB Sr buys farmers land and he talks about rural economy being slow. In India only farmers can buy famrers land. AB sr showed that he is a farmer and brought lots of land in UP and Pune...

AB Sr and farmer...thats a big joke.

How about helping poor farmers by showing them to use banks instead of going to money lenders for everything...how about teaching them water harvesting...how about telling them the benefits, government has provided to these poor farmers...

I am pretty sure if he does that in one state...rural economy will grow pretty quick...atleast in that state...
