Negativity and bad portrayal of women [DT Note p. 6]

I wasn't very impressed with today's episode because there was way too much negativity in it. I spent the whole weekend (betweem studying), commenting on KSG and Surbhi's profile to increase their rank, and imagining what will happen in Monday's episode. However, what happened today was a below average episode. The last scene and song choice was heart-wrenching. KSG rocked as usual, but what is up with the wide range of negative characters on this show?!

They are making a show with a Muslim backdrop after ages on Indian TV, and they are showing only bad people with bad character like :

1. A selfish and greedy Mom- Rashid's Mother who told him to marry Shireen for moolah!

2. Haseena Bi- Another greedy woman and a bad mother who values moolah more than her son's choice which is Nikhat.

3.Razia- Another ridiculously manipulative and disguisting Mother

4. Rashid- who is apparently so helpless that he can't defend his son

5.Shireen- A brainless woman who doesn't trust her son, but only what she saw and what Razia says.

6. Nikhat- A spineless girl who can neither speak for herself nor her brother.

7.Humaira- A girl who is so weak that she is ready to harm herself, but cannot stand up for what is right because of fear!

Surbhi had once said in an interview that she is excited to the show because of the Muslim backdrop and that she saw some famous Pakistani dramas like " Dhoop Kinare", and "Humsafar" to learn how to play a Muslim character. KSG said he wouldn't show his tattoos and took urdu classes. If the actors are so into their characters, then why are the CVs bent upon messinge everything up? Gul had once said thats he will remove the stereotypes from peoples minds, but I just see her creating new ones and solidifying the old ones. Her previous shows had 1or 2 vilains. Here we have 4 . I just don't get it.

I agree that they can't show a perfect Muslim family and they need a villain, but the negativity is going overboard and the only normal people seem to be Dilshad, Najma, Asad and Zoya.

Also, what is with the uncivilized people in every wedding? We have already seen two girls, namely, Zoya and Maryam who were forced to get married. Well, if you're going to make a Muslim show and wanna show people's hypocricy then don't repeat the same idea twice. In Islam, the marriage is null and void if the girl or guy is not happy with it. Can the audience please be educated about these things without showing muslims like Akram and Mamu's family trying to kill anyone who gets in the way of their wrongdoings??

In short I just wanna say that this show was ONE of my ways of getting away from academic stress and everyday routine of life, but the storyline is getting disappointing and as a viewer, I have the right to express my opinions. There are a lot more issues that they can show, but they choose to show manipulative, weak women and fights and girls being forced to get married.

The last scene did bring tears to my eyes, I LOVE KSG and SJ and ONLY for them, I will hang on for as long as I can, but in between, I will voice my opinions because I want the show to be remembered as a piece of good quality drama and not just something that came and went because of fanaticism.

I dont see it as a matter of Religion...It is a matter of culture...and in India these things do happen so portratying them on screen is fine...

The morbidity of the show is rather disturbing I have to admit.

Today's episode left me a little uneasy. Two suicide attempts and a buried alive scene.

But I think it's a general Indian soap drama than a religious implication.

These and worse than these things happen all the time.. the village the area everything seems real..
If you think these dont happen just go through the news paper daily or weekly or monthly you will surely find similar stories..

the PH has guts to show this along with their story lines.. I know for us its too much negativity.. but let them show the story.. 😛

today's episode was really full of tension.. zoya could have been in much more worse situation.. :(

i understand you and i was not happy about it either but they show this regardless of religion; i mean there is always a spineless husband/father; bewakoof mom; conniving aunt; greedy then later remorseful grandmother, in every show!

Is it necessary to always connect everything to religion, for god's sake this is just a telly serial and please treat it just as another story. Characters are Muslim does not mean, they cannot be negative and if you watch other serials on TV where characters are shown as Hindu, they are shown in the worst possible characters, doing worst possible things, but on this forum or anywhere atleast I have not seen or read anyone judging those characters based on religion. I guess this is the reason why, hardly anyone chooses to touch upon a muslim background to create a story.

Thanks for the reply!! Yes, it was disturbing, and I wouldn't think that it is a religious implication had it not been for the fact that her previous shows did not have so many evil characters. Here we have Haseena, her brother, Raziya. Mamujaan, Rashid's Mom, and occasionally Rashid. We are Indian-Muslim, but my Mom had pakistani dramas in mind and wanted to see some good aspects of the culture, and not just these negative things in every single episode.

You are clearly showing yourself to be a bigot. Are you trying to say that we are making an issue out of nothing?? This post is full of MY opinions, and you cannot generalize based on them. Agreed that hindu characetrs are shown as negative too, but even that is wrong. Our dramas have intense negatviity in them which is why I prefer not to watch those shows because out of my 5 close friends, 4 are hindu.

TRPs are directly proportional to the no. of evil characters or some such thing 😆

The baby killing scene from her previous show has forever scarred me, so yes Gul is always capable of morbidity.

Oh well.
