Gauri's Family
Alok: Gauri's father is a vaidya by profession and is highly respected in his community. He loves his family and will do anything to protect them. He is simple, honest and kind.
Gauri: She is a simple girl who has a strong head on her shoulders. She is bright and funny but she isn't the type that needs to prove herself. She knows who she is .. she knows what she wants! She is traditional but modern. She knows how to make anyone love her; she is caring and one of a kind.
Kaya: Gauri's pampered and younger sister is Kaya. She is a feminist and has her own set of ambition and convictions. Becoming a doctor has been her life long dream. She feels that she is being victimized to pay for her brother's mistakes...
Mashima: She is Alok's cousin who is a widow. She lives with Alok's family. She is a positive character.
The Kapoor Family
Dada: Dada is the head of the Kapoor family... He is Mahen's father. Dada is a very positive and fun loving. He is extremely progressive and everyone respects him.
Dadi: Dadi cribs for everything but at the same time is loving and caring. She is a funny character who is kind hearted and innocent.
Mahen: Mahen is a true businessman who looks suave and gentlemanly. He is selfish and arrogant. He knows how to use people like pawns to win his battle. He wishes to be a politician as he knows if he wins the elections, it will help him in business. He takes calculated risks in life.
Nikhila: Nikhila is a typical Indian bahu. She is the one who takes final decisions on behalf of her husband. She is diplomatic.
Shiv: Mahen's youngest son. Shiv is very charismatic. He loves going around with women and enjoys his life. He has a very good business sense and his father has high hopes from him. He does everything with a lot of energy and passion. He has a very volatile relationship with his lady love, Ipshita.
Palak: Palak is slightly negative and wants to live her life with freedom. She likes to talk about class and status...
Daksh (Dash): Daksh has an extra marital affair but pretends to be very nice with his wife in front of the family. Everyone knows about his affair except Dada. He also has issues over a land with Mahen.
Shyala: Shyala is Daksh's wife. She is frustrated because of her husband's extra marital affair and so is insecure about her children and wants her son to join the family business.
Vivan: Vivan is very ambitious and studious. He is frank and blunt. Vivan is studying management, because his mother wants him to do that... But his dream is to become a pilot. He hates his father as he knows about his relations. He shares an intense relationship with his mother.
Shubha: Shubha is a student of philosophy and hence always is philosophical in nature.
Maya: Maya is Ayush's wife and is the only sister of Mahen. She is the typical nanad who likes to talk about everyone is the family and create a negative energy in the house. She thinks that daughters too have equal rights in the parents' property.
Ayush: Maya's husband is basically a negative and selfish character. He stays with Mahen's family as a ghar jamai. No one in the family thinks he's a negative person as he is very nice to everyone, especially Mahen.
Rana: He is an adopted child. His real parents are Mahen's paternal aunt and uncle. He is very simple and innocent. He loves his wife and wants to see her happy. He works as a clerk in Mahen's company and dosen't think about his reputation and status.
Shibani: A positive character in the family. She is finicky about her husband and very possessive about him.
Anupam: Mayank is a big business tycoon who is very intelligent. Shiv idolises him. He is innocent and genius. He is not fashionable. He is very good in his work and remembers everything about business. At office, he is very charged but at home he is always sleepy, tired and lazy. When he comes to know about Ipshita's relation with Shiv he is hurt.
Devika : She is the rival of Mahen Kapoor. She owns a land, which Mahen wants at any cost to complete his dream project. Later, it is revealed that she is Gauri's dadi. She knows about Mahen's plan to get Shiv married to Gauri and so she wants Shiv to divorce Gauri.

Part 1: Starts from where both Shiv and Gauri get married!
Shiv – he is quite frustrated at the whole situation. He can't stand the fact that he is married to Gauri. He is completely appalled at his father.
Gauri – realizes that this is not going to work, but for her father she had to go through with it. She could never see her family suffer or be upset.
Scene: Gauri and Shiv in there bedroom – Suhaag Raat!!!!
Shiv comes into the room with a completely disgusted look on his face. He looks at Gauri and blasts of at her. "Why did you come back, you had the perfect opportunity. You could have lived your life and I could have lived mine. Why the hell did you come back?"
He stared at Gauri and she looked like a zombie. She was contemplating whether or not to open her mouth or just stay quite. But then she figured that they both were stuck and that it be better if she just say what she had on her mind.
Gauri looked up into Shiv's eyes and said, "why did you agree to marry me and take Shashanks place when you knew you didn't want this?"
Shiv looked back at Gauri completely taken off guard. He didn't know what to say. He knew the only reason that he had said yes was because his father had threatened him. His father had said that he was going to disown him. Disown his sister and him, how could he?
Gauri stared at Shiv and once again repeated her question. He looked at her with a blank stare and finally broke the gaze. She looked at him from beyond and said, "I came back because I would have died if I dishonored my father. I could never see him hurt or sad. But you, you only married me because of money. I know that your father had threatened you to disown you and not give you a single penny."
Shiv swiftly turned around to be gazing at a woman who for the first time had put him in his place.
She was staring at him with teary eyes. She went on to say, "that I understand that you did what you had to do, but you need to understand that I did want I had to do. I could never live with myself if anything happened to my father's honor. I know you don't want this and I completely respect that. It's not something I asked for. I don't want to get in your way nor do I want you too feel trapped. You are free to do anything you like, be with whomever you want, live your life to the fullest. The only the thing that I ask is that you never disgrace my father or your father."
Shiv looked at her and laughed straight in her face. He looked at her said, "Right, know I understand this whole drama. You say all this but all I am hearing is that you want to live your life and live off of my money. So what if I married you because I was threatened. You still could have walked away, to hell with honor and respect. I want my FREEDOM, for crying out loud!" With that he stormed out of the room leaving Gauri thinking. She looked at where he was just standing and told herself, that she would prove Shiv wrong. She didn't marry him for his money!
Part 2!
The next morning Gauri got ready and walked downstairs. She was greeted by the family members and helped the ladies in the kitchen. They slowly everyone came down for breakfast. After everyone finished, she saw her opportunity and walked over to Mahen Papa to talk to him.
Gauri looked at him with very warm and innocent eyes. She took his blessings and said, "papa I wanted to talk to you about something really important. I was wondering if I could work." She paused and looked at her father in law and he was expressionless. After a couple of seconds, he said, "that actually would be a really good idea. I think that would really open you up and get you familiar with Bombay. I think you should join the office today itself." Gauri looked at him with very gracious eyes but interjected that she would be very happy working for another firm as the company firm is not something she knows. She was more interested in working outside of the family and getting a different type of experience. Mahen looked at her with very quizzical eyes and finally said, "I guess if that's what my daughter wants, then that's what she will get."
Gauri was exceptionally ecstatic. She already knew what kind of work she wanted to do and who she wanted to work with. Ever since the night when she met Anupam at the park, he had really earned her respect. She thought that he would be a perfect gentleman and a boss. She quickly called him up and asked if he had any positions available for her. Anupam was totally taken a back but quickly jumped on the opportunity. He thought that this girl would be great for his company and really could use the help. He hired her as his personal assistant and asked her to come in.
She quickly left and went to work!
Part 3
Shiv was sitting in the office contemplating his discussion with Gauri. It really rubbed him the wrong way but then he thought .. well at least she isn't going to be one of those typical wifes that's more like a ball and chain. He decided that he was going to take Gauri up on her little offer. He was going to be whoever he wanted to be with but never let anyone know especially his or her father.
He instantly picked up his celly cell and called his friends and told them to all meet up at the Bar! He was going to make sure that he lived his life to the fullest regardless of his current situation.
After work he went home to quickly change. He walked in to see the Mu Dikay Rasam and cursed his fate. His mothers face automatically lighted up when she saw him and asked him to come and sit with Gauri. He went over and sat next to her and gave her a wicked smile. Then he bent over to her and whispered, "hello dear wife, I just wanted to let you know that I will take you up on your offer. I just hope you don't regret it as I know I will enjoy torturing you." Gauri looked into his eyes and responded, "Mr. Husband, I am glad you are going to love your life, I support you as long as you never disgrace our family, and (moving a little closer she whispers) trust me you won't be able to torture me." They both looked at one another and Kaya clicked a cute picture.
Finally they both did all the proper rasams and were let loose. They both went upstairs. Gauri went and got ready for bed while Shiv got ready to go out and meet up with his friends.
As Gauri came out of the bathroom, she understood her next major hurdle. How were they both going to sleep in the same room on the same bed. She thought and finally came to the conclusion that this is Shiv's room and that he should get the bed. She assembled her bed on the floor and went to bed.
Shiv arrived at the club to be greeted by all his friends. He was having an amazing time and then when he got tired decided that it was time to go home. He walked into his bedroom too see the layout and just smiled. He thought to himself, maybe this whole situation will work out. He quietly went to bed.
Part 4
The next morning Shiv woke to a very loud and annoying alarm. He looked at the time and it read 9am. He rubbed his head and eyes and realized that he had to be at work at 10 for a really important meeting. He looked at the side table and noticed a small note that read, "Good Morning". He reached for it and the morning tea that was sitting next to it.
Shiv,
Good Morning.. I hope you had fun last night. Papa came in last night and asked about you. I told him that your friends were throwing you a party which only required your presence. I hope you didn't mind the sleeping situation. I wasn't sure what to do, but this is what I thought both of us would be comfortable. We will just have to make sure no one ever knows.
Tonight we have to be home around 8 for the reception party at home. Ill see you then. Have a great day and good luck with your 10 o clock meeting. (PS – Hope you didn't mind the 9am alarm clock. I didn't know what else to do)

Shiv looked at the note and completely disgusted. He just could not help but curse his own fate. He loved his freedom and hated the fact that now this middle class girl is going to tell him what to do and how to do it. He crumpled the note and through it away. After drinking his tea, he got ready and went to work.
Gauri was really enjoying her first day. She liked her fellow co workers, her boss, and most importantly her work. Anupam was a very busy film director and her job was to make sure that he was great at what he did. She was to make sure that he was on time for his meetings, collaborate all his meetings, ect. None the less, she loved her work and not to mention the chance of meeting stars really excited her.
Her first day was quite busy. She didn't realize where the time had gone but it was 6 o'clock. She had to rush home, change, and help out at the house. As she was on her way home, all she really hoped for was that Shiv would show up.
As she entered the house, she saw that it was being decorated beautifully. Her mother in law saw her first and came over to her. Gauri took her blessings and gave her sweet little hug. Nikila looked at her and said, "Beta, I know you want to be independent but it's really not necessary for you to work. You can easily stay home and relax." Gauri looked at her and said, "nahin badi mom, its nothing like that. I just would feel useless. This way I can have best of both worlds. Work and be at home. But only if its okay with you!"
Nikila, ' oh yes! I have no objection, I think it's absolutely great but I just don't want you to burn yourself out." Gauri smiled and said, "I promise I won't, and if can't handle it I will leave my job."
At that point Shiv walked in looking hot as ever. As he walked in the first person he saw was Gauri. Needless to say he was disgusted. He went straight to his room. Nikila saw this and told Gauri to go and get ready as well!
Part 5
Gauri entered there room with great caution. She noticed that Shiv was in the bathroom, so she decided to get her clothes all together. That way when Shiv came out she could go shower and get ready. Shiv came out in his towel and quickly got dressed. While he was getting ready Gauri was getting ready in the bathroom.
She came out to put on her accessories and while she was putting on her churiya, she broke one of her bangles on her wrist. She didn't really say anything but it sure hurt. She quickly turned around to go get a towel from the bathroom but bumped right into someone. She looked up and saw Shiv. He was standing in front of her with a wet towel.
As she bumped into Shiv, a little blood got onto his new white shirt that he had just put on. He looked down at her and was already annoyed that she bumped into him, but then when he saw the blood he went completely bonkers.
Shiv looked at her and said, "what the hell is your problem? Can't you look before you turn around? Because of your stupidity, my new white shirt is ruined. Now what should I do with this shirt. I know maybe I can give it to your father, he wouldn't mind taking hand me downs." With that he smirked and grabbed another shirt.
Gauri was completely appalled at what he just said. She truly felt guilty for ruining his shirt, but she couldn't believe her ears. She knew that he would never actually do this but still if he could say he could do it. None the less she decided that for now she would leave the topic alone. There would be a time when he would eat his own words, and that she would make sure of.
Shiv came out of the bathroom all ready and looked at her and said, " If maharani ji is ready, then lets go get this over with. I have to go out tonight with my friends!"
They both left, Shiv in front and Gauri 2 steps behind him. Gauri looked up and all she could think how life has changed. She always thought that husband and wifes walked hand in hand together. Then she came out of her dream and went back to reality, her reality.
Now back to the party. all the older ladies stood there saying how beautiful the couple looked. How they looked like they were so in love. Needless to say, Shiv looked up and was appalled. He could not understand what these ladies were talking about. He could never love Gauri. He couldn't even stand the site of her.
Part 6
Finally all the festivities, all the hungama of Shiv and Gauri's wedding was finally over. They could get back to there lives and go about there daily routine.
They both tried to stay out of each others way as much as they possibly could. They would only talk when they needed to or in Shiv's case, were forced to.
One day Mahen called Shiv into his office and explained to him about this major deal that was happening in London. He thought that Shiv would be the person to send and that he could really handle it. He also mentioned at how proud of Shiv he was. Shiv never really heard these things so it too made him feel on top of the world.
Just as Shiv was leaving his father's office, Mahen said, "I have booked 2 tickets for both you and Gauri. It will be good for both of you to go spend some time alone. Shiv whirled around and said, "but dad I don't think that's a good idea. Gauri won't be able to get the time off and plus she will get so bored there. I will be in meetings all day." Shiv was really trying hard to go alone but Mahen got up and walked up to his son. He put a tender hand on his shoulder and said, "don't worry, I have already spoken to Anupam and he has agreed to give Gauri 10 days off. Shiv you need to realize that you are married now. You need to make time for your wife. Don't let her get bored. Understand!"
Shiv looked at his father and instead of arguing with him just nodded his head. As he stepped out, all he could think of was I can't let him down. He just gave me such a huge responsibility, I can't let him down. I guess I will deal with Gauri in London. With a frustrated sigh he left to his cabin.
Part 7
They were to leave for London in 2 days, and Gauri was a nervous wreck. She had about 20 things to do in the office, and about 100 things at home. She just didn't know how she was going to get everything done. She had even requested Mahen if only Shiv could go as she was so busy with work. Her father in law said, "beta this is the time for you to spend time with Shiv. Work will always be there. Your youth won't!" She nodded with a smile and went to go finish everything. She decided that it would better to go and not let her parents down.
She walked into her bedroom, only to stare into some very cold eyes. Shiv looked at her and said, "I don't want to go with you anywhere, but am being forced to. All I request is please don't embarrass me. I don't want to lose this deal. And for crying out loud, if you are going to wear these clothes, do not come out of the hotel room. Do you understand me!" With that he stormed out. Little did both of them know that Dadi had heard everything and got a very clever idea.
The next day, Gauri was busy tying up all lose ends so that she could leave for a week. Anupam hadn't realized how dependent he had become on her. He literally got scared for the next 10 days. So he had her make a list of everything, for A to Z. At lunch time Dadi walked into her office to surprise her. Gauri was so overwhelmed that she went and gave Dadi a big HUG!
They chit chatted for a couple of minutes when all of a sudden Dadi said, "Gauri, chal I wanted to take you out. Tu chalegi na mere saath?" Gauri was totally bogged down with work but could never refuse her dadi and just nodded. She excused herself and told Anupam she would be back in an hour or so.
Dadi took her to the mall. Gauri looked at her and said, "but dadi I have so many clothes, I really don't need any more for a long time." Dadi smacked her on the head lightly and said, "Gauri beta, you are going to London, there you don't wear clothes like these, you wear more western clothes. That's why I have brought you here." Gauri was astonished, at the same time she was a bit relieved. Maybe this is what she needed to actually buy western clothes. She was modern but because there was never a reason for her to wear western clothes, she never cared to. So the went shopping and picked up a lot of cute things: a business suit for her meeting, some jeans, cute kurtis, some skirts, dress, and last of all shoes. They quickly purchased everything, and Dadi dropped Gauri off at work and took everything home.
Gauri skipped into work with a new tone. She wasn't doing this to impress Shiv. She just would never want to embarrass him. Plus there was nothing wrong with being modern with a little culture.
She quickly finished everything and more and went home around 7. She helped out at home and worked with everyone in the kitchen. At about 11 she was totally exhausted and decided to call it a night. Just as she was about to step into her room, dadi came up to her and asked her to come and sit with her for awhile. Again Gauri couldn't refuse.
Part 8
She walked into Dadi's room and they were just talking about her work and small things. Then in a serious tone Dadi asked Gauri, "how is your relationship with Shiv?" Gauri was completely taken aback. She didn't even know how to respond. She just kept on staring at the carpet, praying that someone would call her. Dadi repeated her question and Gauri finally looked up. She knew she could lie to dadi. She said, "Dadi, things between Shiv and I are as expected. We both compromised so it will take us time. This was not something either of us wanted. I married Shiv to save my father's honor and he married me because Mahen uncle forced him." Dadi was completely shocked. Gauri went on to say that, "even though we have compromised, we both have vowed not to hurt our families and would like that no one knows of our compromise. It is what it is, but one day we will both learn to love the compromise. Trust me!" Dadi didn't even know what to say except that I wish you the best and anytime you want to talk you can always come to me. With that she wished Gauri sweet dreams and Gauri went off to her room. She was exhausted and the only thing she could think of was to get some sleep.
She walked into her room, to see Shiv sitting on the computer working on the project that he had to present in London. He looked up at Gauri and said, " I wanted you to look over this project as baba is making me take you to the meeting." Gauri was extremely tired and all she wanted to do was sleep but instead she nodded and took the files to her little bed on the floor. She propped herself up and looked through everything.
She couldn't understand how this was profitable to the other company so she turned around and very said, "um vo, can I ask you a quick question?" Without even looking up he said, "mmmmm!"
She got up and walked over to him. She knelt down and asked him, "I don't understand why the other company would want this deal. It seems that we have described the product and our services, but we haven't added something unique that would set up apart." She looked up only to find him staring at her. He was for the first time counting his lucky starts that he didn't immediately yell at her as she actually made sense. He went on to explain the uniqueness lies in our customer service. The way he explained had Gauri sold, but she said, "You need to put that in the report, it sounds wonderful!" With that she got up and went back to studying the reports. Shiv just stared at her and shook his head!
Finally she had finished the report and was off to bed. She looked over at Shiv and noticed that he fell asleep sitting up. She walked over to him and picked up his laptop. She put it on the charger and saved all his documents. Then she put the blanket on him and went to bed herself.
Part 9
It was a beautiful day and they only had the morning to tie up all lose ends and finish there packing before their flight at 4:30.
Shiv went to the office in the morning as Gauri finished all there packing. Shiv had pulled out all his clothes that he wanted to take. That was one benefit of having a wife. He would never have to pack his clothes again.
In the office Shiv fixed his report and then gave it to his father to check it out. An hour later, Mahen came into Shiv's cabin and slammed the report down on his desk. Mahen in a very serious tone, "I have never seen such a report. This is some of your finest work. I loved the part of explaining there added benefit of our customer service. I think they will really appreciate it that. None the less, Shiv I am very proud of you and if the London doesn't take our proposal I know that you did the best job to get it!" With that Mahen left his sons office wishing him all the best. Shiv never felt so proud and self confident. In his mind he actually thanked Gauri!
He left the office at 12, so that he could get a quick bite to eat and then get ready for his flight. He had his favorite aloo parantha. Then he ran up to freshen up. He went into his room to see all there bags neatly packed and Gauri looking through the boarding passes and there passports. She was dressed in a nice black body fitting sweat suit. She had simple stud earrings on, her mangal sutra and 2 rings on. She looked so simple, so casual that Shiv couldn't take his eyes of her. He wasn't attracted to her but just loved seeing this side of her.
She looked up and saw him coming. She smiled and sorted everything while Shiv freshened up. As he finished getting ready, she started to take some of the small bags down. He trailed behind her with the larger suit case. Everyone wished them a happy journey and wished Shiv best of luck with the new deal.
Part 10
They reached the airport on time and checked in. They finally boarded and found there seats. They settled in and the plane took off.
Gauri sat next to the window and decided to take a nap. She was extremely exhausted. Shiv took out his lap top and started to work on his presentation. He was extremely worried but unknowingly it comforted him to know that Gauri was going to be at in the same room. Finally after working about 2 hours, he looked over at Gauri and decided that he too would take a small nap.
He put his things away and reclined his seat. He fell into a deep sleep, and didn't realize when he rested his head on Gauri's shoulder. He slowly got really comfortable and snuggled right up to her. Gauri too was in a deep sleep and didn't realize that Shiv was sleeping on her.
Right before they were about to land, the airhostess announced if the passengers would kindly place there chairs in the upright position and put there seat belts on. At that announcement Gauri woke up. She looked over and saw Shiv snuggled next to her. She smiled and whispered to Shiv, "Good morning, wake up Shiv!" She slowly patted his cheek and he just grabbed her tighter. He said, "Nahin, I don't want to wake up. I am so comfortable." At that point he realized what he was doing and quickly got up in an upright position. He looked at Gauri and apologized to her for falling asleep on her shoulder. She just looked at him and smiled.
They finally landed and cleared customs. They reached the hotel that the company had made arrangements for. They both silently freshened up and went to the meeting. Shiv was looking over his final points on his presentation when Gauri came out of the restroom dressed in a nice Anne Klein black business suit. She had a nice baby blue blouse underneath and cute baby blue pumps on. She looked so professional that Shiv was completely blown away. Again it wasn't that he was attracted to her but seeing this different side of her really softened him.
They both go to the meeting and the presentation starts. Needless to say it was a complete hit. Everyone was absolutely impressed and congratulated the lovely couple. Gauri was very professional with every one of the guests. She shook every ones hands and thanked them for coming. Shiv was quite impressed as he would never have guessed a middle class village girl liker herself would be so sophisticated.
Finally the owner came up and personally congratulated Shiv and told him that he will definitely get the contract and that he will send the papers in the morning to his hotel so that he can review it. Shiv couldn't be happier and with excitement shook the owner's hand.
The presentation was over, the wait, the anticipation was all over. They were finally going to be able to enjoy their trip in London. The only problem was that they didn't want to spend it with one another. So they headed back to the hotel where Shiv had thanked Gauri for her help and mentioned that they had got the contract. He went on to say, "I have some really close friends here in London that I would like to meet. You are welcome to stay in the hotel or do whatever you like. I will be returning quite late." Gauri looked at him and smiled. She said, "don't worry, you enjoy yourself and congratulations on a great presentation. Baba would be really proud of you right now!" With that Shiv left the hotel!
Gauri sat on the bed and decided that she didn't want to waste all her time in the hotel. She wanted to see London. God knows when she will be able to come back. So she changed into a cute pair of jeans, a simple pink kurti, and a cute pair of sandals.
Part 11
Gauri took one look at herself and with confidence left the hotel. She took a cab and went downtown. She wanted to see everything and go shopping for everyone. She did all the touristy things and then around 4 o' clock decided to get some coffee. She went into the hippest shopping center and got herself a nice cup of coffee. Little did she know that Shiv was meeting all his buddies in the same mall.
Shiv was sitting in the same coffee shop with his friends when Gauri entered. Shiv's back was to the door but his friends couldn't help but notice the beautiful woman that just entered the coffee shop. There was something about her. There was simplicity in her, there was culture in her but most importantly there was security in her. The guys looked at Shiv and one said, "You know it doesn't matter how many woman I date, but in the end I would always want to go home to the woman that was simple, the one that my parents, my family loved." Shiv just laughed and said, "right and where the hell would you find this woman." His friend looked up and said, "you would find it in a woman like her." He pointed at the beautiful woman who had entered the coffee shop. As Shiv turned he was shocked to see Gauri. He saw her get her latte.
His friend looked at her and said, "I don't know that woman, but I bet she is everyman's ideal wife!" Shiv was absolutely shocked! He was mesmerized at her simplicity and radiance. He was also taken aback with his friends comment.
Shiv's other friend looked at his friends and said, "well I don't know about you guys but I don't think I should let my future wife just walk away like that." He got up when Shiv held his wrist and said, "don't even bother!" His friend had a very confused look on his face and Shiv understood. He added, "she is already married, look at her ring finger on her left hand." His friend smiled and said, "dam I guess I missed that boat."
They all laughed leaving Shiv feeling very confused. He turned too see Gauri doing some shopping and enjoying herself. He saw a hint of happiness on her face. He had a very eerie feeling within. He couldn't explain. He just felt happy, secure!

Finally the gang decided to bid there good byes and head home. Shiv headed back to the hotel only to find Gauri not there. He called down at the reception and was informed that she was at the poolside.
Shiv wasn't sure but decided to go down anyways. He walked over to the poolside and saw Gauri sitting near the pool under an umbrella reading a book. He walked over to her but she didn't notice. She was so engrossed in her book!
Shiv approached her and murmured, " vo um, I am not sure but if you are hungry we can get some dinner at the hotel restaurant?" Gauri looked up at him with a smile and just nodded. She slowly got up and they both walked to the restaurant. It was a quiet meal. They didn't really have anything to say to one another.
However when the champaign came, Gauri raised her coca cola, looked directly at Shiv, and congratulated him on closing a big deal. Shiv looked up and raised his glass as well. They went on eating in silence. For some reason it didn't bother them. They were perfectly comfortable.
They headed back to the room after dinner. There trip was coming to an end. Gauri decided to pack up everything so that they would be on time in the morning.
Shiv decided that he should help, so he started folding his clothes and handing them to her. Everything was done in silence. They both silently realized that they didn't completely hate one another. They just didn't know one another. Shiv was dying to the Gauri in the coffee shop. Gauri was trying to understand the caring aspect of Shiv but was completely appalled by his anger.
They finally finished everything and decided to go to bed. Gauri had asked for a cot and fell asleep immediately. Shiv stayed away for a while contemplating the whole trip.
Finally they got back on the plane and in no time they were back in Bombay. Home sweet home! Back to the same life, the same style!
Part 13
Things were the same for the next couple of weeks. They both tried to stay out of one another's way. They fulfilled all that they needed to but kept it to a minimal. In front of everyone they looked like they were the happiest but alone they didn't even know one another.
Gauri just wanted to keep peace and her father's honor. Shiv didn't want to be thrown out of the will. Needless to say they both were bounded but for there own selfish reasons. No one made a step forward or backwards.
Shiv would get irritated at all the small things. He couldn't stand the invasion of his private space. Gauri couldn't understand where to go. She was trying hard to stay out of his way but she did long for that marriage that everyone woman dreams of.
Shiv was very busy with work. He was working quite close to his father and chatchu regarding the new project that they had signed in London.
Gauri too was very busy in Anupam's office. She didn't realize how much work there was and how much Anupam had really started to depend on her. In some way it made her feel appreciated.
One night, it was almost 10pm when she left work. She didn't realize it was so late but she had to finish the project before she went home. The delegates would be here at 9am sharp and she had to be on top of her game.
She locked up the office and went downstairs to get a taxi. She was waiting when she heard yelling. She turned the corner to look and saw 4 to 5 hoodlums beating up a single unarmed guy. She went closer and about 200 yards away noticed that they were brutally hitting Vivan. She was so scared but knew that she couldn't let them beat up her brother in law who in heart she considered her brother.
She quickly walked up and yelled, "hey, leave him alone." She started to push the guys off her brother and put herself in front of them. They hit her couple of times on the arm and side but eventually stopped. She quickly placed a protective arm around Vivan, who looked like hell. He was so badly hurt that the only thing Gauri could think of was to get him to a hospital.
One of the gundas looked at Gauri and said, "tell Daksh Kapoor that if he doesn't listen to us, then this is nothing. Next time we will kill his son!" With a devilish grin he turned and all his hoodlums walked away with him.
Gauri was so frightened and in pain that she stood there numb. Finally she snapped out of it when she heard Vivan's moan. She quickly secured her files, his bag, and Vivan. They then quickly walked to the street and got a taxi. She asked them to take them the nearest hospital. Vivan needed medically attention asap. He was bleeding in all different directions.
Finally they got to the hospital and the doctors took Vivan to the nearest room and started working on him. The hoodlums had broken 2 ribs, his left arm and right leg. He had a nice concussion and quite a few bruises. He was ordered by the doctor to take 1 weeks rest and that they would have to keep in observation because of the concussion.
As the doctors were examining Vivan, a nurse approached Gauri and asked her if she was okay. She took Gauri's arm and said, "looks like you love your brother a lot." She then took her to the nearest examining room and cleaned up her arm, put some ointment on it, and then bandaged it up. Gauri was pretty soar but was very happy to hear that Vivan was okay. She decided to call Shiv.
Shiv picked up the phone with a very irritated look. "What do you want?" Gauri sighed and said, "Ji vo mein, I was leaving work when" Shiv rudely cut her off and said, "do I look like I give a crap what time you come home or anything else about your life. He disconnected the phone and throws it on the bed. Gauri looked down at her phone and redials his cell.
Shiv looks at the bed and picks up the phone saying, "what part of "I don't care" did you not understand!" Gauri quickly said, "Vivan is in the hospital." She figured this would get his attention. Shiv listened silently as Gauri narrated the whole situation and Shiv said, "I am coming." Shiv loved Vivan more then anyone in the world. He was his brother, his friend.
He rushed to the hospital to see Gauri sitting in the waiting room. He walked up to her and asked, "how is Vivan?" Gauri stood up and said, "the doctor said that he will be fine. He has a concussion and because of that they are going to have to keep him overnight." Then after a couple of seconds she says, " Shiv, the police will be coming any minute to take mine and Vivan's statement. One of the hoodlums had said, " tell Daksh Kapoor to listen otherwise next time I will kill his son." She hesitated and then said, "What should I tell the police."
Shiv looked at her pleading eyes and said, "don't tell them anything about chatchu. Just tell them what happened and if you recognized anyone." With that the doctor came out. Shiv walked up to him and asked how is Vivan. The doctor replied, "that he is fine and you should be very thankful to your wife. She loves her brother a lot!" With that he walked away and Shiv looked at Gauri and said, "Thank you for treating my brother like your brother." With that he went away to go call the family.
In the meantime one of the nurses came and approached Gauri and said that the patient wanted to see her. She smiled and requested that the nurse also tell her husband. The nurse nodded and left.
Gauri proceeded to the examination room and saw Vivan for the first time. He looked pretty beat up but luckily his face lit up when he saw Gauri. He looked at her and raised his hand. Gauri quickly grabbed his hand and said, "don't try to say anything, you just need to relax." Vivan looked at her, closed his eyes and said, "bhabhi thank you so much for being there for me. I have insulted you in so many ways but you still took those blows for me. I don't understand." At this point Shiv was standing at the door watching the two. Gauri sat next to him and held Vivan's hand and said, "I don't have a brother; I always wanted a bother that I could tie Rakhi on. When I got married it wasn't an ideal wedding, but I knew that with time things would change. You are my brother in law but I think of you more like a bother. If that's okay with you?" Vivan with a smile said, "of course!"
Shiv smiled and decided enough of all this sappy talk. He barged in saying, "what the hell Vivan, if you really wanted to get beat up, you should have come to me. I can really knock you out." The three of them looked at one another and all laughed.
They were all pleasantly talking when the police arrived. The two of them gave there statement and both of them didn't mention a thing about Daksh Kapoor.
Finally the family came. Shaila aunty ran to her son and kept on crying. Gauri moved aside so that the family could all spend some time. Later, Shaila walked up to Gauri and thanked her for her all that she had done for her son.
Part 14
Things had finally calmed down and everyone went home except Shaila aunty. She decided to stay in the hospital with Vivan.
Gauri was exhausted. She had a huge presentation in the morning at it was already 3 in the morning. She was in pain, hungry, and tired. She wanted to eat something but she was so tired that she didn't have the energy. She decided to change and just hop into bed.
Shiv watched Gauri contemplate! She stood there with one hand on her tummy and the other rubbing her head. He finally sighed and said, "Gauri, you must be exhausted, why don't you change and I will bring you a glass of milk and some cookies." Gauri looked up totally shocked. If he hadn't said her name she would have thought he was talking to a ghost. He had been so caring that she took a moment to reply. She looked at him and with a half smile nodded affirmatively.
She went to go change and Shiv went downstairs to go get her milk and cookies. When he came back to the room he saw Gauri making her little bed on the floor. He walked over to her and set the tray on her bed. He sat down in front of her and handed her the glass of milk. Gauri very gratefully took the glass and a cookie. She was just about to dip the cookie with Shiv said, "Gauri, I don't know how to thank you for what you did for Vivan today. He is more of a brother then a cousin and I am happy to know that you care for him the same way I do. I just …" There was a pause and before he said anything Gauri looked at him and said, "you don't have to thank me. I didn't do this for you. I did it for MY brother." Both of them smiled at one another and Gauri finished her milk and cookies. They both went to sleep.
Gauri woke up feeling pretty light headed and a bit feverish. Nonetheless she got up and got ready for the presentation. Today was a big day for her and she had to be on top of her game. Surprisingly, Shiv also got up pretty early. Today he didn't need his 9am alarm. He too was getting ready while Gauri was. It was sweet silence, one that both were very accustomed to.
Gauri finished getting ready and grabbed her files. She was walked to the door when she started to feel really dizzy. She dropped her files and hung to the door to steady herself. Shiv saw this from a distance and rushed over to steady her. As soon as he touched her he knew that she had a high temperature. He took Gauri too sit on the bed and said, "Gauri, you have a very high fever, I think you should stay home and rest." Gauri knew that he was right but she also knew that today was a really important day in the office. She looked up at Shiv and said, "I would love to stay home, but I have to go take care of some things in the office. As soon as I am done I will be home. Don't worry!" She slowly got up, grabbed her files and walked downstairs.
Shiv sat on the bed contemplating what just happened. Was he really worried? Why did he ask her to stay home? What difference did it make to him? There was something inside of him that was concerned. He just couldn't understand his own feelings!
Part 15
Gauri went down and quickly forced a glass if orange juice down her throat. She wasn't really in the mood to eat, plus she was really nervous.
She decided on the way to quickly stop by the mandir and go meet Vivan in the hospital. She quickly went to a nearby bakery and grabbed some bagels, donuts and a hot cup of tea.
She walked into the hospital feeling very weak but kept on telling herself that she had to do it. She walked into Vivan's room and his face just lit up. When she saw him she too had a huge smile on her face. Shaila aunty looked at her and forgot the past. She thought that Gauri couldn't have intentionally broken her marriage if she had risked her life to save her son.
Gauri walked in and gave a sweet hug to Shaila aunty and tight squeeze on the hand to her brother. She asked him how he was feeling and he said that he was doing great. He just can't wait to be discharged.
Gauri smiled and said, "I figured as much. That's why I brought you something to get you through the morning." She handed the baked goods and his hot tea. She also had brought chai for Shaila aunty. Vivan looked like he found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. He didn't even thank her properly, he just started chowing down on the food.
Gauri smiled and said that she had to go to work and that she will see him in the evening.
She approached work at exactly 8:30am. She had a half an hour to gather all the things and set up. She was ready. She was confident!
2 hours later, Anupam walked up to Gauri and just shook her hand. He was amazed with the presentation. He was more excited that the new deal had closed and that the delegated had given Gauri a standing ovation for her presentation.
Gauri was absolutely pleased. She was happy that everything went well!
Shiv was sitting in his office doing his work. However for some reason every hour he looked at the clock and wander what Gauri was doing. He didn't understand why he cared for her. He hated her! Yet he wanted to pick up the phone and ask her how she was doing.
He thought to himself that maybe he was paying more attention to her because she took care of his brother like her brother; or maybe because she never said anything but kept on supporting him. There was something about her that made his forget his anger. He wasn't falling in love with her or anything. He was just finding a level of respect for her.
It was 3pm, when Gauri finally got a chance to sit down. She sat down and realized that her temperature was still really high and that all she wanted to do was go home and sleep. She decided that since she had a really good presentation that she would go home early. She told Anupam that she was going home early but that she would be back tomorrow ready to work.
Gauri went home and went straight to bed!
Around 5 o'clock the door opened and all the lights came on. Gauri quickly sat upright in her bed and nervously looked around. She looked only to find Shiv staring right at her with a very confused look on his face.
Shiv with a very concerned look on his face walked up to Gauri and asked if she was ok? Gauri was still confused and just put her head down. She had a splitting headache. Shiv hesitated but then he softly touched her forehead. He got really concerned when he realized that her temperature was still very high. He took her hand and told her to sleep on the bed. He placed her in bed and tucked her in.
He sat right next to her and then asked her in a very sweet tone if she had eaten anything. Gauri looked up at him and said that she wasn't very hungry. She went on to say that she felt very tired, dizzy and weak. She then said that all I need is a good night's rest and I will be all better tomorrow. With that she went to bed and Shiv patted her head and turned off the light.
Part 16
The next morning Gauri woke up feeling 110% better. Before she could get out of bed, Shiv approached her. He gently took his hand and touched her forehead. He was pleased that her temp was down. He gave her a sweet nod and went to go get ready. She did the same. They both started there day!
Later that evening, Vivan was coming home. Gauri, Dadi, Nikila, Shobha, and Ipshita, dadu, Mahen, and Daksh all decided to throw Vivan a surprise party to welcome him back home. Shiv and Shaila aunty entered with a limping Vivan behind them.
He was so ecstatic to see all his loved ones throw him a little gathering. He walked in receiving all the flowers and candies. Shiv just stood a far and admired the scene. He always dreamed of having a caring and united family. He just never imagined that it would be someone like Gauri who would bring them all together.
Part 17
Life went on like this for a while! They both lived life day by day in silence.
One fine day, the whole family decided that they were going on a holiday. Unfortunately, neither Shiv nor Gauri could go. Gauri was stuck at the office as Anupam was busy with some delegates in Bangalore. So she had to handle all the work in the Mumbai office. Shiv too was going to have to work as the whole family decided to go to there farm house. He was quite irritated that the whole family decided to go.
Little did he know that this was all a conspiracy! For a while now everyone had noticed that the 2 newly weds weren't fighting but at the same time they weren't getting closer. They decided to leave up to fate and leave them alone, that way the two won't have any excuses.
Gauri came home around 7 and noticed that the whole house was completely empty. She turned really quickly as she heard a really loud thud. Shiv had just entered the house. She looked at him and gave him a sweet little smile. She then went into the kitchen and looked around and decided that before making anything, she would ask Shiv if he wanted anything. Shiv had gone to his room to go freshen up and came downstairs.
Gauri came out of the kitchen and walked up to Shiv with a glass of water. She softly said, "um there is no one at home. Everyone went to the farmhouse and I was wandering if you wanted to eat anything. Shiv glanced up and said, "no thanks, I actually have plans! I am going out to my friends party at a club." Gauri gave a nod and turned to walk away. Then all of a sudden she didn't realize what came over her but she turned to face Shiv and said, "if its okay with you, do you think I can come with you?"
Shiv was shocked! Shiv got up and before he said anything he thought to himself. "I might as well have her come with me. At least my friends and I will have a good laugh."
He looked at her and with a sarcastic grin said, "why not, go get ready we will leave in 20 min!"
Gauri didn't realize what came over her but she did know that she didn't want to live her life like this forever. She decided to go upstairs and change out of her sari into something a little bit more modern.
She looked into her closet and found a cute sleek black dress. She quickly changed and came down. She looked absolutely gorgeous. She walked down with confidence and style. Shiv was staring at her from head to toe. He loved it when Gauri looked glamorous and so confident. He suppressed all this feelings and angrily said, "lets go, I don't want to be late!"
They both entered the club only to be greeted by lots of people. Shiv was greeted by all his friends and Gauri was greeted my all the high society women's daughters. All of them wouldn't stop commenting on her new look. She was actually having a good time. She was mingling with other people, getting to know others, and most of all making good connections.
Shiv too was enjoying the site. He was happy! He kept on stealing glances here and there making sure she was okay! Didn't understand why, but there was something. If only his anger didn't get the best of him!
Gauri was standing with one of her friends, when the waiter came by with drinks. Machan, Shiv's best friend, grabbed a champaign glass and handed it to Gauri. Gauri politely took the soft drink, and said "I don't drink, but thanks anyways. By the way, you have thrown an amazing party!" Machan was completely taken a back by her. He was always under the impression that Gauri was some kind of bhengi! They both were conversing normally; talking about work, life and just small things.
Shiv noticed this from afar. He liked what he was seeing. Then he noticed that Machan asked Gauri to dance and she said yes. They both were dancing and having a good time. They were laughing, talking and enjoying.
Finally, it was 1 in the morning and everyone was getting tired. Slowly people were leaving and Gauri decided to approach Shiv. She went up to him and with a smile said, "um, what time did you want to go home? If you wanted to stay, that's completely fine, Ipshita said she wouldn't mind taking me home!" Shiv looked at her and for some reason he didn't want her to leave him. It was a weird feeling and he sure as hell didn't understand it. He said, "no don't worry, I will take you home. Let me just say bye to all my friends!" Gauri acknowledged and told Ipshita to go home and to be careful.
Gauri and Shiv walked outside and it was raining. Like a gentleman you would think that Shiv would offer his coat or something, but no. He was so oblivious to everything. On the contrary he turned to Gauri and said, "you wait right here, I will go get the car!" In the dark, in the rain he told Gauri to wait all by herself. Gauri was about to object when he just gave her a sharp look.
He walked away and Gauri waited patiently waited. As she was waiting the inevitable happened. A car full of hoodlums approached her and started whistling. They were about to get of the car when they saw another car approaching. They quickly got in the car and left. Shiv's car approached and Gauri ran into the car. Shiv looked at her and said, "what did you do this time?" Gauri looked at him perplexed and said, "nothing, lets just go home!"
They were driving when the encountered traffic. They sat in one place for almost 5 minutes, when they noticed a lot of cars were turning around. Shiv quickly asked a guy walking on the road what happened and the guy said that there was a huge accident and that it would take almost 2 hours to clear the road. Needless to say both of them were irritated. Shiv was about to turn the car around when Gauri said, "um Shiv, if you don't mind would you like to go get something to eat? I am starving!"
Shiv was extremely irritated but realized that he too was very hungry. He nodded and they went to a nearby hotel for some good Chinese food.
Part 18
They both went into the restaurant and were greeted by a goofy little fellow. He was so full of life and bubbly. He entertained the couple till there table was ready.
They both were seated at a nice cozy two seated table over looking the swimming pool. It was a cute little atmosphere, very romantic. Gauri looked happy and Shiv, well he too was happy! He had a smile on his face that he just didn't understand.
Finally there food came! Shiv had ordered French fries and a burger whereas Gauri had ordered ice cream. They both sat in silence eating when Gauri decided that enough was enough. She was going to speak.
She looked up at Shiv and hesitated for 2 seconds but finally said, "um Shiv, can I talk to you?"
Shiv looked quite irritated but at the same time didn't have the energy to argue. He just looked at her and his look said "go on".
Gauri understood him and went on. "I know that our relationship is not something either one of asked for. I know you had your reasons and I had mine. (She paused, looked down and then looked up) I guess what I am trying to say is that I am tired of this. I don't know what you want. (She paused again staring into his eyes! She finally broke the gaze, closed her eyes, took a deep breath and went on) I know it's a lot to ask for but do you think we could try to be friends till this relationship ends.
Shiv completely perplexed! He too was tired. He actually didn't mind the friendship compromise. He thought that it was inevitable for there relationship to end, might as well collaborate with one another and make it go quicker.
He nodded and said, "I guess you are right. We both are miserable! We might as well compromise so that we can get our freedom again." That last statement was like an arrow piercing Gauri's heart. She wasn't happy, but she didn't want her relationship to end. She wasn't in love with Shiv but she didn't believe in divorce. Not to mention what her father would have to face! None the less she let it slide and with a smile looked up. She said, "then I guess its finalized. She brought forth her right hand and said 'friends'" Shiv looked at her and for the first time during the marriage he felt good. He shook her hands and restated there friendship.
They both finished eating and while they were eating Gauri decided to test the friendship. She looked at Shiv across the table and said, "lets play 20 questions!" You would think that Shiv would get irritated but he actually decided to give this friendship thing a try. He figured why not be a little more pleasant with the one person I spend so much time with. He took gave a devilish smile and said, "okay but be careful of what you ask, because I too get 20 questions"
Part 19
Gauri smiled and started with her first question. She said, "um what is your favorite color? Shiv looked up at her and said, "blue!" Then as if there was a spark it became question answer session!
Gauri: "What is your favorite food?"
Shiv: looked up and licked his lips and said, "Mexican with ice cream as dessert!"
Gauri: "What is your favorite ummmmmmm yes, what is your favorite time of the day?"
Shiv: He gave a very perplexed looked. He thought to himself, that's an odd question. Nonetheless he thought for a second and replied, "sleep time!"
Gauri: She looked at him and said, "now that's one thing we have in common. I love the peacefulness that you get when you sleep. Feel like you are on a different planet and can just lose all your stress for one day." Shiv retorted back, "exactly, that's the one time when you feel like there are no worries and that you can just be happy." Both of them looked at each other and gave each one a reassuring smile.
They went back to eating when finally Shiv asked, "what's your biggest regret in life?" Gauri looked up and with a smile said, "you know this is going to sound weird but I really don't have any regrets. I think that you don't have control in life. There are some things that are just inevitable. Plus anything that has ever happened bad to me has always turned out to be good for me." She felt weird discussing her feelings with Shiv but figured that if this was one of her friends she wouldn't hesitate." Shiv looked up at her and said, "that's a very optimistic way to look at life. I don't think I am that optimistic. Things get to me really quick. I tend to blame life for everything." He shrugged and went on eating.
Gauri broke the silence and said, "if you have one dream what would it be?" Shiv looked up at her and said, "to own a Ferrari and be Bill Gates." He laughed out load and said, "just kidding, I think if there was one thing I would wish for is for a happy family life and to be successful. I don't necessarily mean to make a lot of money, just the satisfaction that I was capable of doing something, you know what I mean?" Gauri looked at him and smiled. Shiv looked at her and felt very comfortable. He didn't understand why but he felt that he could talk to her about anything and everything.
Shiv asked, "what's your biggest fear?" Gauri with a very disgusting look said, "spiders! I can't stand them. I think they are gross." She shivered and made a horrible face that made Shiv laugh. Shiv said, "mm.. I see well I know what to do when I need to scare you." With that he winked at her which took Gauri completely by surprise. She smiled to herself and said, "this was one of the best ice creams that I have ever had." Shiv looked at her and gave her questionable look! He said "looks like you haven't had a lot of ice cream." Gauri looked up and said, "no I have had a lot of ice cream but I never met such a wonderful person while having ice cream.
