Wish Salman Khan on his 47th Birthday!

Salman's Birthday Cake
Chulbul Pandey turns 47! and it's been yet another super-successful year for India's biggest superstar. What can one say about Salman Khan, that hasn't already been said or written?
From Maine Pyaar Kiya to Dabangg 2, he has seen it all. From disasters to all time blockbusters, court cases to India's most popular charitable trust Being Human.
Health-wise too, it's been a pretty good year. The superstar has slowly recovered from Trigeminal neuralgia, also known as 'suicide disease'.
From the entire Indicine Team, we wish Salman Khan a very happy birthday, good health and more success in 2013.
Salman Khan's Top 10 Performances
Salman Khan made his debut about 2 and half decades ago in Biwi Ho To Aisi, where he had a supporting role to play. Since then, he has featured in more than 75 films (including special appearances). His acting talent has always been under-rated, but what you simply cannot argue, is the fact that he is one of the most successful superstars India has ever seen.
Here is my list of Salman Khan's Top 10 Performances

1. Tere Naam: Salman put his heart-n-soul into the character of Radhey Mohan in Tere Naam. The movie came at a time when his career was quickly sliding and brought him back into reckoning. Although the film wasn't one his biggest hits commercially, it remains his most liked and acclaimed performance.

2. Dabangg: It was a close call between Dabangg and Tere Naam as Salman lived the character of Chulbul Pandey to the fullest. Humor, Anger, Romance.. it was a prefect blend of every emotion. The commercial success of Dabangg was also the turning point of his career after a prolonged lean patch.

3. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun: These kind of boy-next-door roles are actually very tough to enact because there is a very thin line, which if crossed might look pretty awkward or unconvincing on screen (like Hrithik Roshan in Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon). But Salman played the iconic character of Prem with ease and looked every bit the character.
4. Judwaa: This was the movie that started his partnership with David Dhawan and they both went on to work in several hits over the last decade. Both the characters – Tapori Raja and the nice guy Prem – were poles apart from each other. And Salman was at his best here. Unfortunately, he won't be a part of the sequel.
5. Maine Pyaar Kiya: This is were it all started for Salman Khan. Under Sooraj Barjatya's brilliant direction, Salman was raw and lovable. Considering the fact that this movie was only his 2nd release, his performance was superb. He fitted the role to the T and Maine Pyaar Kiya made him an overnight superstar.
6. Wanted: Salman looked at ease with action in the remake of Pokkiri and played both the rowdy as well as the officer's part very well. Action scenes were brilliantly done. Although Wanted wasn't as successful as Dabangg, it started the trend of south remakes and action entertainers in Bollywood (along with Aamir's Ghajini of course)
7. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam: This movie boasts of some power packed performances by all it's lead stars – Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai were terrific, but Salman was a stand-out. His chemistry with Aishwarya was electrifying, arguably the best he has shared with any of his leading ladies. The off-screen relationship that the two shared during the time, translated into beautiful chemistry on screen.
8. Biwi No. 1: The portrayal of a infidel husband, caught between his loyal wife and an attractive girlfriend, with elements of comedy was done perfectly by Salman in this David Dhawan directed entertainer. The movie went on to become the biggest hit of the year.
9. Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai: Salman played the role of a brat and then a responsible father with utmost conviction. The character was tailor made for him and left a lasting impression. The Deepak Sareen directed film also featured Twinkle Khanna.
10. Jaan-e-Mann: This is one of my personal favorites, simply because it didn't do too well at the box-office. I still wonder why the movie failed to make a mark, but for me this is one of the best emotional performances by Salman, ever!
So there it is, that's my list of Salman Khan's Best 10 performances. More than the film's popularity and success, the list is based on his on-screen histrionics, which is the reason why some of his biggest hits are ranked lower. Also I pondered a lot but found it hard to include Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Andaz Apna Apna, Karan Arjun, No Entry, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi or Saajan as these movies had some solid performances by his other male co-stars.
Some of his other noteworthy performances that didn't make it to the Top 10 list were Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, Khamoshi , Pyaar Kiya to Darna Kya and Garv.
Do give your views and your own Top 10 list. Any other performance which you consider was worthy enough to make it to the list?
Why Dabangg is bigger than 3 Idiots

Indicine writer Abhishek Sharma on why the success of Dabangg was bigger than 3 Idiots.
The messiah of the masses, Salman Khan, has unleashed the first trailer of his home Production and arguably the most awaited movie of the year 'Dabangg 2'. The phenomenal craze for Khan, who is on a dream run, with one blockbuster after another, has raised the expectations exponentially.
While we are all set to hear and read several predictions, reviews and forecasts for this movie from the so called 'trade experts', let us spare few moments to revisit the aura created by the original first film – Dabangg in 2010.
Right from Maine Pyaar Kiya, Salman has always been a huge star with a humungous fan following, but he never had an extended strong hold on the numero unospot. Dabangg changed it all. Released on 10th Sept 2010, the film created history by breaking the first day, first weekend and first week records of 3 Idiots which was released almost 9 months before. Although it fell well short of the final figure (202 c) which remains untouched even today, the unprecedented and unbelievable success of Dabangg cannot be ignored.
Below mentioned is a quick comparison with 3 Idiots, one that makes the unexpected success of Dabangg look much bigger.

- Before 3 Idiots, Aamir Khan's was enjoying probably the best phase of his career with Ghajini (All Time Blockbuster), Taare Zameen Par (Super Hit) and Fanaa (Super Hit) whereas Salman's was on a horrid run before Dabangg – Veer (Below Average), London Dreams (Flop) and Main Aur Mrs Khanna (Disaster).
- 3 Idiots was directed by Rajkumar Hirani, one of the most successful directors in the industry, with both commercial success and critical acclaim. The first two Munnabhai films were classic masterpieces. On the other hand Dabangg was directed by a rank newcomer Abhinav Kashyap.
- 3 Idiots is a dream production of the established and reputed Vidhu Vinod Chopra banner while Dabangg marked the debut of Arbaaz Khan Productions.
- Kareena Kapoor was a huge star and commands a fan following of her own, while the makers of Dabangg were taking a chance with debutant Sonakshi Sinha.
- 3 Idiots, understandably, got exceptional reviews from critics all over the globe and the word-of-mouth was outstanding. Dabangg was panned by most critics as a loud movie without a storyline.
- 3 Idiots was aimed at universal audience as the subject had a global appeal while Dabangg is a typical old fashioned single-screen targeted movie with a routine revenge saga and predictable storyline.
The Business of Indian Cinema has increased manifolds in the last 2 years since the release of Dabangg. But there are only two movies which have managed to cross it's collections in India. And it goes without saying that both were Salman starrers.
Note: This article above is not to undermine or degrade the achievement of 3 Idiots, as it is one of the finest movies ever made. It deserves to be the biggest blockbuster of all time. The whole purpose of the comparison is just to showcase the magnitude of the stardom of a phenomenon known as 'Salman Khan', a man who carried Dabangg entirely on his shoulders with his charisma and made 'Chulbul Pandey' .

From empty theatres to records, Salman sees it all in 3 years

- August 22nd, 2012.
18th September 2009, a day I would never forget. Stepping in to watch a evening show at a premium multiplex, I realised to my horror that the auditorium was barely 30%-40% occupied. The film was 'Wanted'. A Salman Khan starrer no less. And even though the mass centres (especially single screens) had picked up with weekend throwing up some good numbers, multiplexes had a different story to tell. Well, to begin with at least.
This was also the time when reassurance from veteran filmmakers like David Dhawan (Partner, amongst others), Satish Kaushik (Tere Naam) and Boney Kapoor (No Entry, Wanted) had started coming in.
'The film would do wonder on Eid, you would see' – I remember them telling me in unison!
Teen saal baad…

Wanted Salman Khan
15th August 2012 – a day that no Bollywood historian would ever forget. With the first day of 'Ek Tha Tiger' accumulating half of what 'Wanted' had done in it's entire lifetime (of over 60 crores), the verdict was clear. Salman had seen a career elevation (and a remarkable turnaround) in three years flat, that no other actor had ever managed in past or present.
'The film is supposed to strike a balance for all kind of audience. The one Salman has anyways been catering to (read single screens) and another (multiplexes) that has given him a warm welcome too' – Kabir Khan said as the first day collections started pouring in.
Well, when a film reads close to 32 crores on the opening day, no one challenges that, right?
In the three year journey, of course there was an occasional disappointment like 'Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna' and a 'London Dreams', both old commitments. However one can be rest assured that if 'Veer' would have released today with Salman exercising his 'creative' control on the final product, Bollywood would have most certainly enjoyed yet another huge grosser.
After all, the super success of 'Ek Tha Tiger' pretty much proves that. Once again it is apparent that when an actor is on the top of the game and the merits are decent, if not exceptional, audience come along.
Imagine if 'Wanted' arrived today. It would have been an hurricane of massive proportions, something that wouldn't be challenged even by the staunchest of Salman's detractors. After all, not many would deny that despite the super success of films like 'Bodyguard', 'Ready' and 'Dabangg' in the interim period, 'Wanted' stays on top of the list for many when it comes to wholesome 'dhamaal' entertainment.
No wonder then, that the kind of demi-God status that Salman has built over the years, would ensure that 'Dabangg 2' shatters all records.
After all, amongst all characters that Salman has played in recent times, isn't 'Chulbul Pandey' the name one instantly remembers?
