Any Roald Dahl books are always brilliant for children to read - really get their imaginations going. Reading Fantastic Mr Fox or The Witches whiled away many hours for me as a child.

My little sister used to love the Horrid Henry books too.

Horrible histories are really good too. Factual with lots of gory information - very suitable for boys.

Jacqueline Wilson's books for a girl.
